Boulder WC 2010 report #6 - Sheffield

The Sheffield Boulder World Cup 2010 was a lovely event taking place in a circus tent on a grassy fairground. Fortunately weather forecasts were wrong and we enjoyed perfect english boulder conditions! Good news for the last BWC in Munich on the last weekend of July: almost every outcome is still possible with Adam Ondra winning and Kilian Fischhuber not being in the finals for the first time this year! Same is true with the girls where Sheffield winner Chloé Graftiaux, third place Akiyo Noguchi and Anna Stöhr (not in the finals this time) all still can win the Boulder World Cup 2010! We were not entirely happy with the route setting this time and show longer takes of the actual climbing than on previous "Boulder WC reports" to make our point. Specifically, we thought the girls' problems were too reach depended and we are not excited about those "pro-forma-two-hands-on-something-pseudo-tops" (watch for the yellow dihedral and Anna Stöhr falling off three times in the clip!) If you think differently, please join the discussion about route setting. Also stay tuned for our thorough analysis of the "State of the Art of route setting" later this year! On another technical note concerning our "Boulder World Cup 2010 reports" - they walk a fine line between being "fast out" and "interesting & informative". Yes, lower thirds with competitors names would be nice, but mind you, these clips are edited by me immediately after returning from the very draining comps and are meant to ...

the Art of DMITRY SHARAFUTDINOV - Arco 2011

The Arco World Championships was a two faced affair, at least concerning the bouldering. On the bright side was solid route setting, stunning performances and the realization how high the standard is meanwhile, especially in countries that usually don't compete in the world cups (for many reasons). On the dark side we an arrogant organization that was unable to cope with the many competitors and clearly not interested in bouldering at all. Lets start with the bright side though! (see pics from Arco from the perspective of the German bouldering team here!) We have 2 well-deserved winners! Bouldering World Championships have their own rule, one is, "they all boulder well, and in the end a russian boy wins!" (as it has been from 2005 on). When Rustam Gelmanov and Dmitry Sharafutdinov executed their first problems in the semis it became clear to all their competitors that they intended to write this rule in stone. The same is not quite true for the girls, but how Yana Chereshneva and Olga Bibik managed to show this year's best performances when it is the most important is a secret all other athletes and coaches would like to know! They both climbed easier into the final than ... Anna, who was on the brink of repeating "the best unsuccessful climbing you can possibly see" as in Sheffield and Barcelona. In the semis she cruised problem 1-3 only to be stopped with the delicate match on problem #4. The semis were again dominated by Jule Wurm who is clearly the strongest female ...

Anna Stöhr's way through the (semi-) Finals towards being bouldering world champion 2011. Unlike at the BWCs, the organizers made it difficult to film for anybody who didn't pay for TV rights. We hope you'll enjoy this little clip nevertheless! The Arco World Championships was a two faced affair, at least concerning the bouldering. Setting Sessions: My Problem with Ben Mueller

Follow the link to the justclimbmn YouTube page to read more information about this video. Halfway through the night's shoot, tragedy unknowingly struck when I disassembled my wide angle lens not realizing it was vital to reassemble it in the appropriate way. The result was misleading screen captures for the remainder of the night. While the viewfinder showed a wide angle shot, the camera was capturing a far narrower field. In the end, I had lots of scenes with heads cut off, half of a clock and more extreme close-ups than expected. The show must go on, however, so may I present to you the first installment of Setting Sessions. My guest, Ben Mueller, took a few hours late one night to set an endurance problem at the MN Climbing Co-op located in NE Minneapolis and talk to me about some of the mechanics and philosophies that drive his route setting habit. Widely regarded as one of the best setters in the Twin Cities scene, Ben is responsible for some of the top tier comp routes at Passion for Flashin', an annual competition in St Paul, and the dyno problem currently residing at the co-op. Check out justclimbmn.com for more videos, photos and info on the Minnesota climbing scene. Also inquire at justclimbmn@gmail.com about how to get your work on the site.

Boulder World Cup 2011 report - Log-Dragomer

Anna Stöhr and Glairon Mondet Guillaume were the undisputed winners of the second Boulder World Cup of 2011 that will be always remembered for its funky route setting, especially for the girls. The uncoated panels allowed for some truly remarkable problems that spanned from demanding rather old school but highly refined climbing skills to the most new school jumps. The problems only had one thing in common: they were all awkward! As chief route setter Percy Bishton put it: "A nightmare for the competitors, but hey, I'm not paid for being nice!" For the audience that was one of the best Boulder World Cups ever!

Jain Kim and Kilian Fischhuber were the winners of the first Boulder World Cup of the 2011 season in Milano. I kept the report rather short since I already uploaded most of the individual boulder problems, still, the split screens really give so much more information about the route setting but also about the technique of the competitors! As usual, check out www.ifsc-climbing.org for all additional info and www.udini.com for "behind-the-scenes" reports.

Boulder WC 2010 report #1 - Greifensee

The Boulder World Cup 2010 will be a thrilling affair, at least for the boys! Current champion Kilian Fischhuber and wonder boy Adam Ondra tied at the finals in Switzerland's Greifensee with Kilian only winning because his better semi final performance. Bouldering contests are much more experience dependend than lead events. After floating through most of the qualification and the first semi final problems, Adam temporarily lost it (as you can see in the clip) and looked like, well, the seventeen year old boy that he actually is! In the finals though he gave Kilian a tough run for the money. Very impressevely Kilian dealt with the pressure of Adam flashing problem #3 and #4. It will be very interesting to observe this duell over the course of the season. As for the girls, Jacky Godoffe's less than inspired route setting in my opinion left a lot to be desired. For the future there is quite some room for improvement to get the girl problems up the standard of the boys. It was a close decission between current champion Akiyo Noguchi, Chloé Graftiaux and the final winner, Alex Johnson from the States. Shot with my "2010 toy guerrilla camera set", consisting of a Nikon D5000 and 2 Kodak Zx1. Of course the quality is solala, but the bag is cheap and light :-)

Boulder World Cup 2011 report - Vienna

Anna Stöhr won her second World Cup in a row in Vienna and is leading the women's ranking after the third event with quite a margin. With the boys, the situation is a bit more complicated since Kilian Fischhuber got stuck in the qualification round. After his second place in Slovenia, Dmitry Sharafutdinov was climbing really well again and rightfully won in Vienna. Barely a week after Slovenia, the Vienna event didn't quite match that event, the stage is really too low and the audience had a hard time to watch especially the lower parts of the problems. Route setting was most good (just a bit too hard at the boys finals) with some pretty bad problems thrown in, more on that after a closer analyses...

Boulder WC 2010 report #5 - Eindhoven

Excellent route setting for the boys and girls, flawless organization and super psyched and funny hosts Joost Hofman and Steven van Lummel made Eindhoven 2010 the emotional highlight of the boulder season so far. The world cup indeed is going to be a exciting affair - you never know whats going to happen when a climber steps onto the podium! While Alex Johnson, Chloé Graftiaux, Jain Kim and many of the previously strong boys got stuck in the semi finals (or earlier!), Kilian Fischhuber and Anna Stöhr apparently have identical looking twins that help them out when they can't do a problem. Honestly, their ability to not get too depressed by even the most disapointing falls and start the next problem with a positive attitude is in a class of its own! Kilian's third place secures him the lead in the overall ranking, a position that Anna also holds after her victory in Eindhoven. Everyone who witnessed all the events so far realizes how much harder it is to win the overall world cup than any single event!

Boulder WC 2010 report #7 - Munich

The Bouldering World Cup 2010 stayed gripping up to the last problem! Munich's '72 Olympic stadium provided a worthy location for the final event. Of all the potential winners, only Chloé Graftiaux dropped the ball and didn't make it to the finals. In the finals Akiyo Noguchi won by the narrowest margin possible - Anna Stöhr needed one more try for the only problem the girls could climb in the finals. Route setting was very "russian style" as many competitors put it, meaning rather rock like moves on bad holds, what tends to favor either, well, russians or ... rock climbers. Since Adam Ondra is the best rock climber in the world right now It was no surprise than that he won the event and with it the overall Boulder World Cup 2010.

Boulder World Cup 2011 report - Barcelona

Barcelona (ESP) - The heat of Barcelona seems to have shuffled the cards of the 2011 Boulder World Cup, as the favorites Kilian Fischhuber and Anna Stöhr (AUT) did not make it to the podium in the competition set by Reini Fichtinger. In the women's field, Akiyo Noguchi was the only one to complete all four problems, while the second ranked Alex Puccio just sent 2, although being very close the the top of the second boulder. Third the French Melissa Le Neve, with 2 tops in Finals and one top less than Puccio in the Semis. Guillame Glairon Mondet seized his victory and the gold medal by flashing the fourth problem. Behind him, two Russians, Rustam Gelmanov and Dmitry Sharafutdinov, the only one to make it on problem number four together with the French winner. Anna Stöhr and Kilian Fischhuber maintain the lead of the WC Ranking 2011, although their advantage on respectively Noguchi and Puccio has been reduced. Sheffield next week will give an hint of who could gain the World Cup 2011: after Sheffield, the Boulder World Cup will take a break until the last competition of the year, in Munich. Unfortunately this video is less attractive than some other clips too since there was no light on the wall. The footage of the GoPros and other small chip cameras was pretty much unusable. (it would have been very helpful if some of the responsible people had been to some of the previous BWCs to learn a thing or 2) The whole event was doomed when they decided to do it in this concrete ...

Bronx Rock Invitational 2009 - part 1

Recipe for a fantastic boulder contest: Invite 12 very different climbers, all with various backgrounds, 6 girls and 6 boys. Have a cool venue ready, with clean structures that allow for creative route setting that challenge all skills for bouldering. Let them pick straws, one girl and one boy share one section on your structure. Leave it open to them if or if not to coorporate, just ask them to care for each others safety. Let them put up problems, apply as few rules as possible, provide the girls with 2 additional (bad!) holds to compensate for reach etc. Do the ranking / prize thing Melloblocco style, each problem is worth x €, divided through the ascendonistas so nobody returns empty handed. After them setting for one hour, do something for your audience, get into the climber's head, ask them for the idea behind their problem, some might have one, some not, the crowd loves world class climbers talk about climbing! Than it is bouldering time! Your job is done, from now on the thing flows by itself! The climbers support each other, the vibe is friendly and the air electric. Some unexpected turns are to be expected, boys get grey hair over "easy" girl problems, girls cheat by solving macho moves with girl technique. More grey hair for the boys! After 90 minutes everybody is wasted beyond believe and you have clear, undisputed winners. (Jule & Jonas in this case) Everybody is happy. Trust me, we did it three times now. It is called BRONX ROCK INVITATIONAL!

Elektron Machinedrum driving Korg MS-10

Using the Machinedrum to drive a Korg MS10 1. Set up a GND-IMP machine and a GND-SIN machine, in global setting route each of these to their own output - I used E and F in this example. 2. For the GND-IMP machine set it UP to 0, UVAL to 0, DOWN to 64 and DVAL to 127, set the track level and volume to maximum. This will be your trigger pulse, so connect a lead from the output you assigned this machine to into the MS10 trigger input. (output E in my case) 3. For the GND-SIN set it at maximum level and volume, also turn DIST in the routing page fully up (127), set the RAMP and RDEC to zero. This will be your pitch control, route it from its output on the MD you selected earlier into the VCO CV input. (output F in my case) 4. Select accent track and set it to max for all steps and all tracks, it is important that you do this or it won't work as the accent boosts the juice a bit. 5. Program some triggers for the IMP machine, then place triggers on the same steps for the SIN machine, using parameter locks on the PTCH control you can change the pitch played by the MS10, experiment with different envelope settings on the MS and different triggers for the IMP and SIN machines. As you can tell from the video, there are a few limitations with this technique, first the pitch is not linear and does not act as anything like normal scaling, second on the MS10 you get some bleed though of the SIN sound. If you are electronically minded it should be feasable to build a little circuit to ...

Time Capsule

Although a lot of people poke fun at these so called Unboxing Videos, I'm sure anyone that is a conscientious consumer would like to see what comes in the box when they buy something. Especially Electronics & Computer peripherals. I know I watch a good amount of these before making a purchase. This Video originally included my setting up of Airport Utility but I did not read the wizard prompts correctly, so I went the wrong route of setting it up the first 2 attempts. All I had to do was to read carefully but NO! I was too excited about setting it up, so I messed up. I figured out my mistake in the end & the entire setup process should take about 10 minutes start to finish. The Video is not that great but hey, if you want to see what's in the box & how to plug things up, give it a watch. The Time Capsule does exactly what I wanted it for. I'm not utilizing it for Time Machine, but iTunes on the TC hard drive. Works like a charm with my TV & iTunes. All in all, I'm very happy with the Time Capsule. I'm also getting better throughput with my Internet Connection & network in general. I'm not an Apple Fanboy but I do appreciate a Product that is made well, lasts long and works for what it was intended for. Apple Products do fit into that Category. They Don't Just Look Nice! :-) Thanks for watching.

Bruce Friedman's CSX HO Scale Model Railroad

A visit to Bruce Friedman's CSX HO Scale Model Railroad based on the route from Philadelphia, PA to Baltimore, MD. It's a multi-level walk around design, using DCC (Digital Command Control), the signals just as the prototype (aka the real thing) are operated via a computer program and by a dispatcher when they have an operating session, which is a simulation of prototype practices moving the trains over the road, picking up and setting out cars along the route, there are staging yards that trains are set up on to move over the railroad. The trackage is code 70 and 83, which is based on the actual weight of the rail based on how much it weighs per yard, the turnouts (which allow changing routes from one track to another) are based on #6 and #8 specifications, so that means the degree of curvature is what determines whether the turnout is #4, 5, 8, 10 or 12, they go as high as #20's and #30's for high speed operations and even greater. The layout requires 70 locomotives to operate during the ops sessions, also there are a total of 700 cars to fulfill the operations. The layout is based on current operations, folks from all walks of life are into the hobby and t attend Bruce's sessions to operate the layout, railroaders who really run trains either as conductors or engineers, and a great deal of military folks who are stationed in the area or visit the area, and some law enforcement as well. Why model railroading? Well you can simulate what you seen as a kid, things that are ...

BATTERY 3 Tutorial: Sound Design + Multi-Channel Routing by Dubspot

More info - bit.ly In this new tutorial, Dubspot instructor and Sound Design & Synthesis expert Evan Sutton shows you how to split and route the individual elements of a drum pattern from Native Instruments' BATTERY 3 into separate outputs in your sequencer. BATTERY 3 is Native Instruments' acclaimed drum sampler which contains an extensive library of drum sounds and percussive instruments. It allows you to manipulate and shape your drums to fit your style. Sutton starts by explaining how to utilize the various new features and navigate the parameters in the latest version of BATTERY, from setting a default kit which allows you to create template kits. He also explains how to use the new saturator algorithm which allows you to further sculpt drum sounds for warmth, impact, and character. At the end of the tutorial you should have a good grasp of how to create multiple outputs from one instance of BATTERY 3 in Ableton Live so that your drums (kicks, snares, hi-hats, etc.) can be bussed to separate channels in your sequencer.
