Runco's Weekly Music - Paco De Lucia - Cobre

Guest writer... Randy -- from duke law. great contribution... thanks. True Story: In high school I dated a girl named Meg whose mother is Cuban. Meg's mom and I got to talking one day about classical guitar music, and I mentioned Paco De Lucia. Having just finished talking about Andres Segovia, she must have figured Paco was just as innocuous, and asked to borrow a CD. Two days later the CD was returned to me with the following note: "My mom put the CD on for about 5 seconds, ran to the CD player, turned it off, and said 5 Hail Mary's." Unbeknownst to me at the time, flamenco music is "gypsy" music and conjures, for some, associations with black magic and the devil. I don't know much about all that stuff, but I do know that Paco de Lucia burns up a fretboard something fierce. Some have actually called him the best guitar player alive today. I've chosen Paco by himself this time so you can get a feel for how incredible he is. If you like this and want to check out some of his work with other artists, I recommend the album Friday Night in San Francisco, a killer album in which Paco plays with Al Di Meola (who played in Chick Corea's band for a while before striking it out on his own) and John McLaughlin (who played with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew and a Tribute to Jack Johnson), and the song Zyryab, in which Paco plays the steel guitar with Chick Corea on piano. The tune is Cobre, off Antologia Vol. 2 Enjoy Randy

Runco's Weekly Music - Cymande

Thanks for this contribution Craig... much appreciated. A few months ago my friend gave me an album from a band called Cymande. I had never heard of them before, yet so many songs sounded so familiar. After doing a little research on them, it turns out that Cymande was formed in 1971 in London, England by musicians from Guyana and Jamaica. By the mid-70s the band members were going their separate ways and the group was disbanded in 1974. It wasn't until 20 years later that they reaped any financial rewards, as their music became a popular source for samplers. Cymande's original albums are still widely sought-after by DJ's and funk aficionados. Perhaps the band's best known recording is the soulful dancefloor filler called "Bra", which was later sampled by the American hip-hop group De La Soul and used as a breakbeat record by Grandmaster Flash. They also have a song sampled in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The name Cymande is derived from a Calypso word for Dove, which symbolizes peace and love. The group developed a subtle and complex, deep funk style influenced by calypso rhythms, jazz, African music, American soul and UK rock of the time. Cymande can now be seen as one of the most sophisticated of the funk acts that evolved in the early 1970s. What is even more impressive is that all eight member of the band are self-taught musicians. This song "Dove" is from their self-titled album. If it sounds familiar, it's because The Fugees sampled it in the title track of their <b>...</b>

Runco's Weekly Music - Muddy Waters - I'm Ready

There is just something about the blues of the 40's and 50's that is very special. It's almost the result of what some have described as a 'perfect storm.' As I understand it, during the early to mid 1900's each plantation in the south would have a group of black workers from a number of different regions of Africa. The interesting thing is that each of those parts of Africa were very different and had their own unique music style - and music over there was a huge part of their lives -- So over the years (1700's - 1900's), as African communities came together in America... styles were mixed. Some regions of Africa were very percussive, others into string instruments, others had very unique vocal styles, etc. When you blend all this together you end up with things like... a guitar player using the top end of a broken glass bottle as a guitar 'slide' -- to emulate a harsh, 'gritty' sound that was actually the preferred vocal sound of a particular region of Africa... doing call and response -- a custom of another region - between guitar and vocal, all the while playing in a percussive style from another region, and potentially even borrowing some aspects from European music... which the blacks learned to play so that they could be the entertainment at white people's parties and so forth. The stories behind blues musicians are also great. Muddy Waters, for example... was poor and worked on a plantation, and was basically known as a popular musician around his community <b>...</b>

Runco's Weekly Music - Howlin' Wolf - Smokestack Lightnin'

Some say the blues was born on Dockery's farm Dockery's farm was essentially a plantation in the Mississippi Delta region where some believe the blues was born. What we know as fact... is that many men went there to learn the blues. Charley Patton, one of the most famous delta blues musicians of all time, grew up on the farm and was the most popular act in the area -- in fact, some say he was the most influential blues musician of all time. For one, he was the most popular Saturday night act in the Mississippi Delta region... playing songs (sometimes lasting more than 30 minutes) that people could relate to and dance to, all the while being quite the showman (often twisting and throwing his guitar in the air). Perhaps more importantly though was his musical influence -- to name a few: he taught Tommy Johnson, Willie Brown (who in turn taught Robert Johnson -- who Muddy Waters learned the most from); Son House frequently played with Charley Patton in 1929 and learned from him (as well as from James McCoy and others)... and Howlin Wolf, one of the most popular Chicago bluesmen (and Muddy Water's chief competitor there during the fifties and sixties) moved to Dockery's farm in 1926 -- he states, "It was Patton who started me off playing. He took a liking to me, and I asked him would he learn me, and at night, after I'd get off work, I'd go and hang around." Wolf's first recording, titled 'Saddle My Pony,' was even a version of one of Patton's songs, 'Pony Blues.' Wiki states <b>...</b>

Runco's Weekly Music - The Bad Plus - Iron Man

'Iron Man' meets crazy jazz trio... I don't have much of a write-up for you this week, primarily because I don't know that much about the band. They're called 'The Bad Plus.' They're a jazz trio... and they remind me of Medeski Martin & Wood (I think mmw is better -- but if you like them, I'm pretty confident you'll like this song as well). This week's selection is off their album 'Give' and it's a cover of Iron Man. So let me convey a couple points: a) if you strongly dislike Iron Man you won't like this cover... b) don't draw any conclusions unless you listen to the whole song... c) it's pretty intense, so prepare yourself. Truthfully speaking I probably wouldn't recommend the album as a whole (if you're new to the modern jazz genre there are a lot better albums)... but I do like a couple tracks on this CD (track 4 is pretty good; it's titled 'And Here We Test Our Powers Of Observation'). But nonetheless, the Iron Man cover is wild, and worth a listen if you're into this sort of thing.

Runco's Weekly Music - Spoon & Daniel Johnston

I was fortunate enough to meet up with an old friend of mine this weekend. He's a musician -- piano and guitar player -- and a very good lyricist as well. To give you an idea of where he comes from musically... he tends to write his songs around 4:00am, he's never been into playing technically complex music but rather focus's on the relationship between lyrics and sound, and he like's playing old piano's that are out of tune. When we were talking yesterday I asked him who his favorite artist/band was. He replied, "modern artist, or favorite artist ever?" I was like, well go ahead and give me both. He went with Hans Zimmer for favorite modern, and the Lennon/McCartney combo for favorite ever. He obviously likes the Beatles, really appreciates some of Harrison's solo work, etc. but is of the opinion that nothing beats Lennon/McCartney. Nevertheless, he listens to a lot of different kinds of music -- some of which I know I'd never come across on my own. When we were in the car he had a mix in of a bunch of different music - and this week's selections came on... The first of which is by Spoon, an American indie rock band from Austin, Texas. It's a little bit of a weird song... it makes me anticipate something that never comes... and then before you know it the song is over -- and I thought -- hm, I liked that. The 2nd song is by Daniel Johnston (this weeks feature artist) -- and is called True Love Will Find You in the End. My friend first heard about Johnston while reading <b>...</b>

Runco's Weekly Music - Peter Bjorn and John - Young Folks

Guest Contributor/Writer: Olivia Ostrand: These guys are Peter Bjorn and John and they hail from Sweden. Peter and Bjorn played music for 8 years before they joined with John and formed a band in 1999. Simply put, the members names are Peter, Bjorn, and John. Peter Moren is on vocals, guitar, and harmonica. Bjorn Yttling in on the vocals, bass, and keyboards, John Eriksson is on the drums, percussion, and vocals. Their sound is super indie with a little bit of rock. Their past albums include: "Peter, Bjorn and John" (2002), "Falling Out" (2004), and "Writer's Block" (2006). The single that I have chosen is "Young Folks" from their 3rd album, "Writer's Block." This album was the first to showcase all three members as songwriters and taking on lead vocalist duties and sees the band take on a new musical direction. It was recorded in Bjorn's studio Hornstull--an area in Stockholm. "Like the rest of the album, "Young Folks" is playful. It starts off with surging, funky drums, addictive maraca shaking, crazy bongos and a pleasantly lo-fi bass-line; all this wrapped up in a whistling melody -- the result sounds like a mix of a wild west B-movie and a schoolyard full of fuel-engine kids. The song, that features Peter in a duet with Viktoria Bergsman of The Concretes, deals with that first period in brand new relationship when you are nervous and dazed, when you've just met and only want to be with each other whilst at the same time worrying about how much you want to show your <b>...</b>

Runco's Weekly Music - Mulatu Astatke

Sorry the email was delayed this week... it's been a busy weekend -- but I'm bout to go see Styx perform live at Alcatraz in about an hour -- so that should be interesting... I might do a concert review next week -- we'll see... Guest writers still to come: Steve Curtis Zak Koeske Will Haggerty Neal Sussman Paul PJ Cheng Cihan Kadipasaoglu Craig Cramer Jeremy Cohen Pat Santavicca Cihan -- thank you very much for this write-up and for this music... outstanding suggestion... I've always been a huge fan of Bill Murray, and considered many of his movies some of the most impressive that I've seen. With undertones of deep philosophical issues, as well as constant dark (or maybe light) humor with regards to issues concerning life, his movies have struck me as unique, meaningful, and always entertaining. Though most people know him best from Ghostbusters or Caddyshack, when I think of him, I find myself thinking of films such as The Razor's Edge, The Royal Tenenbaums, Life Aquatic, and one of his latest movies: Broken Flowers. In it, he plays a wealthy yet extremely lonely ex-playboy living in a sort of self inherited exile. More importantly, for this email, his next door neighbor is a wannabe Sherlock Holmes, who happens to hail from Ethiopia. It is from this man that I came across the artist: Mulatu Astatqe. His music is constant throughout the movie, and is unlike any I've heard before. Funky bass lines and rhythmic beats, reminiscent of a sort of tribal music lay the frame <b>...</b>

Runco's Weekly Music - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

Guest Contributor/Writer to RWM - Jeff Reeves: Not too long ago, I stumbled upon a Hawaiian artist named Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, known as Bruddah IZ to his family, friends, and fans. Over the past 15 years, IZ has been considered a heavenly voice of inspiration to many, a prominent voice in Hawaii's search for sovereignty, and a legend in Hawaiian culture. Known as "The Gentle Giant", IZ was loved by everyone. But like other talented artists, he died young at the age of 38 because of respiratory problems due to his obesity, once weighing over 750 lbs. He has made renditions, such as Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," still in the top 50 on Hawaiian billboard charts. He also made a beautiful rendition of Judy Garland's "Somewhere over the Rainbow." Search for it on YouTube; it is everywhere. It gives a spiritual and reenergized feeling to the old song. In 1997, over 10000 fans paid tribute to him at his funeral. He is one of three people to have had his casket rest at the Capitol building, the other two being political figures. The song I wish to share with everyone today is instrumental, meaningful, and uplifting. "Living in a Sovereign Land" is IZ's way of celebrating Hawaiian's history, culture, and individuality. Through his vocals, he expresses Hawaiian desire and deservedness of sovereign rule. His ukulele playing is stylishly reggae, uplifting, and simple. Listen for the jazzy bass in the background, and for the bluesy six string guitar solo in the middle of <b>...</b>

Runco's Weekly Music - Ozomatli - Dos Cosas Ciertas

I was passed an Ozomatli CD just last night actually, from my friend Zak. The name sounded kinda familiar but I hadn't really heard their music before. They formed in the mid 90's in Los Angeles, and currently have a 9 piece multiethnic band. They combine Latin salsa, urban hip-hop, reggae, and jazz-funk -- and they embrace the North African and Arab music styles. They are very vocal about their commitment to social justice, progressive politics, and the anti-war movement (they met through their affiliation with the Peace and Justice Center of Los Angeles, and their first performance was for picketers during a strike. They won a grammy in 2002 for best latin rock/alternative album. The primary reason why I thought they'd be a good band to start with was because they make for great car driving music -- especially on a nice summer day. The song I chose is a simple one, called Dos Cosas Ciertas -- meaning "In life, two things are certain" (Death and change)'

Runco's Weekly Music - Sharon Jones

I would be VERY surprised if you don't like this week's selection... It's by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. I heard her on 91.3 FM WYEP -- a Pittsburgh public radio station.... which I would say is just about tied with 90.5 FM for Pittsburgh's best radio stations. Anyways, listening to Sharon Jones is like listening classic Motown -- except it's 'new' Motown -- being produced now, in 2007. Others tend to describe her genre as Funk, Soul, or R&B... call it what you will -- it's good music. She's very soulful... and I can promise -- she's worth a listen. Especially if you grew up listening to 'oldies' as a child... as I did. I was going to put this week's second song ('Nobody's Baby') first, and '100 days 100 Nights' second... but then I realized I chose the 1st and 2nd song off her album. So I figured -- there's probably a reason why she put the first song first and the second song second... and it's probably better than my reason for doing the reverse. That being said... here's '100 Days 100 Nights'... and 'Nobody's Baby,' by Sharon Jones -- in the order they appear on the album. And 100 Days 100 Nights is available for free through Amazon.com.... FYI. Enjoy...

Runco's Weekly Music - John Brown's Body

Guest Contributor/Writer: Randal Weinstein When people think of reggae, they often think of roots reggae, which wikipedia suggests is "a subgenre of reggae that concerns itself with the life of the ghetto sufferer. Lyrical themes include poverty, social issues, resistance to government oppression, repatriation, and Rastafari." Roots reggae is perhaps the best known of the reggae subgenres, having been popularized by Bob Marley. However, US audiences are rarely familiar with other contributors to the genre. This week's offering is a young band in the roots-reggae tradition. You might call them "roots revival." OK, I just made that term up, but their efforts are akin to the bluegrass revival that is gaining steam right now (email me if you want to check out some great bluegrass revival bands). John Brown's Body, named for a famous union marching song in the civil war (in turn named for an abolitionist who preferred action to word and led a raid on 5 pro-slavery southerners that resulted in some hatchets lodging in pro-slavery heads), combine the traditional feel of roots reggae with some more modern sounds, for an excellent groove. Surprisingly, they're from Ithaca, NY This track, "Bread," off their "Pressure Points," release stays true to the roots tradition. Enjoy!

Runco's Weekly Music - Guest Writer - Explosions in the Sky

Neal - thanks a lot for the write-up buddy... A few months ago, I downloaded a compilation from Insound that contained all kinds of new and up-and-coming hipster music. I bypassed most of the typical filler crap when I became fixated by the band, Explosions In The Sky. The name sounded familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it. I played the MP3 and again thought to myself, "Where have I heard this before?" I then proceeded Google and remembered these were the dudes who did most of the score for the 2004 film, Friday Night Lights. I am very big on soundtracks, and I remember the Explosions songs (way back when) REALLY adding to drama of an already fantastic movie. As it turns out, this band was so crucial to the success of the film, that they were brought back to contribute a handful of their songs for the TV version of FNL (equally amazing, FYI). Just a quick summary: Explosions In The Sky (below, right) is an Austin-based instrumental "post-rock" quartet known for their orchestrated guitars, cinematic arrangements. They've been around since 2000 and have since released four equally amazing studio albums. Normally, I'd recommend a starting point for this band, but you really can't go wrong with any of their releases. Borrowing a line from Bill Simmons, their songs are so epic that playing them in the background can pretty much turn any routine task into a life-changing experience. Without any lyrics, it is difficult to gauge what any of their songs are really about <b>...</b>

Runco's Weekly Music - Elliott Smith

I was kinda feeling the pressure this week... Sharon Jones is a tough act to follow. I got a lot of great feedback on her - so I'm hoping I have someone this week you'll enjoy just as much. And that's Elliott Smith. A lot of you have probably heard his music before... although never a 'mainstream' musician, he was nominated for a Grammy for Miss Misery - which appeared in Good Will Hunting (losing to 'My Heart Will Go On,' from Titanic), and he quietly made a name for himself over the years. His sudden death at age 34 was just terrible, and 'spooky' if you ask me. The basic story is that he was in an argument with his girlfriend... who consequently locked herself in the bathroom. She heard him scream, opened the bathroom door, and saw him standing with a steak knife in his chest. So she pulled it out and he fell to the ground and died. Smith had battled drug and alcohol abuse his whole life, although the coroner's report indicated that at the time of his death there weren't any traces of illegal substances or alcohol. Nobody really knows if it was suicide... although there was a possible suicide note on a post-it that said, 'I'm so sorry -- love, Elliott. God forgive me.' Now, he did in fact suffer from severe depression throughout his life... which makes it no surprise that his music can sometimes 'sound' depressing (as songs are often a reflection of one's life). But I think there's a lot more to it than that if you dig a bit deeper... His attention to detail is <b>...</b>

Runco's Weekly Music - the in sound from way out

Many many years ago... the Beastie Boys had a super legit sound... One thing is for sure -- there is certainly a lot more to them as musicians then what most people in our generation remember them for -- songs like, 'Body Movin,' 'Brass Money,' and 'Intergalactic.' It's sad really, because they have this album called, 'The In Sound from Way Out!' It was released in 1996, and it's fantastic. A good handful of the songs are extremely soulful and funky, a couple others are a little 'out there,' (in the same way some MMW songs are) but overall a very chill and impressive album worth purchasing. A few people I know that listen almost exclusively to rap really like a couple of the tunes on here -- which is interesting but not surprising. Why? Because they feature heavy, funky, base lines that are great for the car. So here goes two songs off the album -- grab the headphones, and be sure to turn up the bass on the computer speakers if possible... enjoy.
