Stravinsky conducts "Sacre du Printemps" - 1929 - part 1

Stravinsky conducts "Sacre du Printemps" - 1929 - part 1 First part : L'adoration de la Terre (A Kiss of the Earth ) - Prelude (introduction) - Les augurs printanier (The Augurs of Spring) This is a legendary recording of Stravinsky conducting "The rite of spring" with the "Orchestre Symfonique de Paris" . It could be the premiere recording, but I'm not sure, as there's also the Pierre Monteux recording of the same year. (Pierre Monteux having conducted the premiere performance) The Rite of Spring was a ballet, created in 1913, with a choreography by Vaslav Nijisky, set and costume designs by Nicholas Roerich, and Stravinsky as composer. The premiere performance in Paris caused a total scandal and riot, as audiences at that time, being used to the classical ballet were shocked by the primitive, chaotic nature of the performance and composition. Stravinsky clarified the subject when he wrote in 1910 : "... there arose a picture of a sacred pagan ritual: the wise elders are seated in a circle and are observing the dance before death of the girl whom they are offering as a sacrifice to the god of Spring in order to gain his benevolence." Leonard Bernstein once said about a passage :"That page is sixty years old, but it's never been topped for sophisticated handling of primitive rhythms..." It's remarkable how clear the different instruments come out in this recording, which is amazing considering the limited technical possibilities in 1929. I've added some original pictures ...

Hakim plays Hakim on the Sacre Coeur organ

Naji Hakim (born 1955 in Beirut) was a pupil of Jean Langlais and he studied at the Conservatiore National Superiere de Paris, where he won first prizes in each discipline. He has also won first prizes in the organ competitions in Haarlem, Beauvais, Lyon, Nuremberg, St Albans, Strasbourg and Rennes. He was titulaire in the Scare Coeur from 1985-93 and upon the death of Olivier Messiaen became his successor in that organ loft until the present day. The organ is mostly Cavaille-Coll with some additions/changes by Mutin and Jean Renaud. The organ was originally built for the Baron Albert de Espée for his castle music room in Ilbarritz by Cavaille-Coll (IV/70). The baron then wanted another organ to replace it in 1905, and the old instrument was sold to Charles Mutin and assembled in his workshops. It was altered to make it less orchestral in outlook and eventually sold to the Sacre Coeur in 1914 (then still unfinished) and installed in 1919. Resorations and renovations in 1930 & 1960 led to some unwise additions and it was in very poor condition by 1980 when a complete restoration was planned. The restored organ was dedicated on Whitsun 1985. This Final comes from Hakim's triptych Hommage á Igor Stravinsky (Stravinsky is one of his greatest influences), the triptych consists of a Prélude, Danse and Final all based on gregorian themes. It was first performed at the Royal Festival Hall, London in November 1987. This recording comes from the Priory Records label, PRCD 327 Great ...
Daniel Roth Improvisation Sacré Coeur Pipe Organ Paris (3)

An Improvisation/Postlude on the "Te Deum." Since Daniel Roth seems to be a rising YouTube star, I thought it would be fun to hear him when he was titulaire at Sacré Coeur. Check out the picture of him from 1980 (& excuse the fuzziness -- it was scanned from an old album cover). The Sacré Coeur organ is a IV/78/109 Cavaillé-Coll from 1898 -- the largest CC ever built "from the ground up." (St. Sulpice & Notre Dame were re-builds). It was built originally for a baronial chateau in the French coastal town of Ilbarritz. It was installed in Sacré Coeur in 1913, & inagurated in 1919 by, among others, Widor & Dupré. Sacré Coeur must be, if internet photos are a gauge, the most photographed building in Paris. At least the exterior. The interior, on the other hand, is almost never photographed, and once you go inside, you can understand why. It's got a sterile, pseudo-Byzantine sort of weirdness that doesn't inspire photographs.

Joffrey Ballet 1987 Rite of Spring (1 of 3)

Igor Stravinsky and Vaslav Nijinsky collaborated in 1913 on the most shocking, ground breaking music and ballet the world had ever experienced and it may still be the most striking work ever done. Nijinsky's choreography, performed only 8 times in 1913, was nearly lost forever until the Joffrey,in 1987, with great effort and commitment, reconstructed it and performed it for the first time in over 70 years.
