www.washingtonpost.com More than half the baby shampoo, lotion and other infant care products analyzed by a health advocacy group were found to contain trace amounts of two chemicals that are believed to cause cancer, the organization said yesterday. Some of the biggest names on the market, including Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo and Baby Magic lotion, tested positive for 1,4-dioxane or formaldehyde, or both, the nonprofit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics reported. The chemicals, which the Environmental Protection Agency has characterized as probable carcinogens, are not intentionally added to the products and are not listed among ingredients on labels. Instead, they appear to be byproducts of the manufacturing process. Formaldehyde is created when other chemicals in the product break down over time, while 1,4-dioxane is formed when foaming agents are combined with ethylene oxide or similar petrochemicals. The organization tested 48 baby bath products such as bubble bath and shampoo. Of those, 32 contained trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane and 23 contained small amounts of formaldehyde. Seventeen tested positive for both chemicals. "Our intention is not to alarm parents, but to inform parents that products that claim to be gentle and pure are contaminated with carcinogens, which is completely unnecessary," said Stacy Malkan, a spokeswoman for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, which is calling for the government to more strictly regulate personal care products such as shampoo <b>...</b>

Concept behind this look: This makeup isn't inspired by the official music video for "Safe and Sound" (which had no makeup at all). I created my own concept for this music video and imagined one of the scenes with Taylor wearing makeup similiar to this. In this music video, I see Taylor having an ally or friend similiar to that of Katniss and Rue (who I think the song is written for). Toward the middle of the video, Taylor's friend gets hurt or killed and Taylor becomes enraged. When she slowly turns away from her friend to go after whomever hurt her, Taylor's attire catches on fire and her makeup would look something similiar to this. I imagine the video being shot around a forest and at the end of the video when the war is over there is a bunch of smoke and flames burning out. I think Taylors makeup would be very natural in this scene and she would be revisiting the place where her friend got hurt or killed. The response of leading activist organization Breast Cancer Action Network was swift and sure. They condemned the campaign as a marketing gimmick and the companies as hypocritical. Why? Because the very cosmetic and personal care products these and many other companies make are loaded with compounds believed to cause cancer. It is hard to believe, but its a fact that experts say is becoming increasingly clear: most mainstream cosmetic and personal care products contain at least one hazardous chemical compound, and many contain far more than that. By various estimates, there are between about 5000 and 10000 ingredients currently being used in everything from eyeliner and lipstick to shampoos and deodorants. While many are thought to be perfectly safe, many are not. The National Institute of Occupational Safety, for example, has identified almost 900 personal care chemicals that are toxic in one way or another. Some cause cancer. Others cause hormone disruption.
