Camille Saint-Saëns - Danse Macabre

Danse Macabre (first performed in 1875) is the name of opus 40 by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The composition is based upon a poem by Henri Cazalis, on an old French superstition: Zig, zig, zig, Death in a cadence, Striking with his heel a tomb, Death at midnight plays a dance-tune, Zig, zig, zig, on his violin. The winter wind blows and the night is dark; Moans are heard in the linden trees. Through the gloom, white skeletons pass, Running and leaping in their shrouds. Zig, zig, zig, each one is frisking, The bones of the dancers are heard to crack— But hist! of a sudden they quit the round, They push forward, they fly; the cock has crowed. According to the ancient superstition, "Death" appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death has the power to call forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (represented by a solo violin with its E-string tuned to an E-flat in an example of scordatura tuning). His skeletons dance for him until the first break of dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year. The piece opens with a harp playing a single note, D, twelve times to signify the clock striking midnight, accompanied by soft chords from the string section. This then leads to the eerie E flat and A chords (also known as a tritone or the "Devil's chord") played by a solo violin, representing death on his fiddle. After which the main theme is heard on a solo flute and is followed by a descending scale on the solo <b>...</b>

A complete version of Camille Saint-Saens' "Le carnaval des animaux" (Dutoit) - No. 1-7

Because he wanted to be considered a composer of serious, substantial music, Camille Saint-Saens suppressed his "Carnival of the Animals" shortly after its premiere, in 1886, disallowing any execution of the suite and publishing only one movement, "The Swan", in his lifetime. And while that movement is a welcome addition to pieces written for the cello, the whole "zoological fantasy" is a most successful example of humourously themed music in the classical repertory and has become, with full right, one of the composer's most popular works. It is cast as a suite of 14 short pieces and was originally scored for, at first sight, rather small chamber group of flute, clarinet, two pianos, glass harmonica, xylophone, two violins, viola, cello and double bass, but is usually performed today with a full orchestra of strings, and with a glockenspiel substituting for the rare glass harmonica. But the brilliance of Saint-Saens' piece lies not only in the sheer number of surprisingly witty and charming depictions of the animals; the composer uses only the instruments he needs at the moment and draws exceptional music from different combinations of his compact "cast". My choice recording here is a charming and warm account by the London Sinfonietta under the leadership of Charles Dutoit, the recording that introduced me to the work itself and which is one of my preferences for this particular piece. I divided the movements into three separate uploads with the finale actually being <b>...</b>

Saint-Saens : The Swan ( Le Cygne ) - Carnival of the Animals

Title : Saint-Saens : The Swan From Wikipedia: Le Cygne, or The Swan, is the thirteenth movement of The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. This piece features a solo cello in tenor clef and two accompaniment pianos. The piece is in 6/4 time, with a key signature of G major. It makes use of legato and slurring, the music should flow like a swan gliding through the water. This piece is often played using much vibrato. This is the only movement from the Carnival of the Animals that the composer would allow to be played in public during his lifetime as he thought the remaining movements were too frivolous and would damage his reputation as a serious composer. The piece was written in tenor clef, although there are some arrangements in bass clef. Because the high range of the cello is displayed in this piece, the voice is often misnamed as the violin. The cello, however, has an extremely large range and can play in this register, and its tones are rounder and more mellow..

Camille Saint-Saens - La Cygne ( The Swan)

The Swan ( Le Cygne) By French Composer Camille Saint-Saens. Conducted By John Williams and the Boston Pops. From The CD" Pops In Love" Including pictures of rare beautiful Black Swans. Sea Birds and Oil Spills Seabirds are strongly affected by oil spills. A seabird may get covered in the oil. The thick black oil is too heavy for the birds to fly, so they attempt to clean themselves. The bird then eats the oil to clean its feathers and poisons itself. If workers have found sea birds that are not dead because of oil, they will take the birds to a cleaning center or captivity where they are kept in a facility because they can not live in the wild on their own. Animals that are in captivity because of an oil spill will be cleaned by professionals and volunteers. When a bird is in captivity, the oil will be flushed from its eyes, intestines, and feathers. The bird will be examined for any more injuries like broken bones, and it will take a medicine to prevent any more damage. After the bird seems healthier, it will take a test on its abilities to float in the water and keep water away from its body. As soon as the bird passes its test, it will soon be let out into the wild.

This originally aired on PBS in the 1980s featuring a poorly made up vampire host to introduce and discuss. It was also shown to me when I was in elementary school. One of the best short length Halloween animations ever created. Terrific illustrations. About the song: Danse macabre, by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, was an art song for voice and piano (first performed in 1872) with a French text by the poet Henri Cazalis which is based in an old French superstition. Two years later, the composer expanded and reworked the piece into a tone poem for orchestra, replacing the vocal line with a solo violin. The rest, they say, is history. 'The Elephant' by Saint-Saëns with Thai Elephants

I took my piano to the mountains of Kanchanaburi to play for some very old, injured and handicapped elephants. In this video I play 'The Elephant' from 'Carnival of the Animals' by Saint-Saëns. Download sheet music (free) gallery.me.com * * * * * * * * * * History: Saint-Saëns wrote 'Carnival of the Animals' during a holiday in a small Austrian village in 1886 which he scored for a chamber group which included an unusual instrument, the glass harmonica. The theme is borrowed from a work by Mendelssohn and Berlioz originally written for high instruments such as the flute. Saint-Saëns moves these themes in good humor instead to the lowest and heaviest sounding instrument in the orchestra, the double bass. Saint-Saëns thought this composition too lighthearted to be published during his lifetime, fearing it might harm his reputation as a serious composer. He did allow one work from the set to be published "Le Cygne" or 'The Swan'. 'Carnival of the Animals' was performed in his lifetime, but just to a small group of friends, one of them being Franz Liszt. 'Carnival of the Animals' was published after his death with consent and first performed publicly in 1922 and is often included in a groups of works which include Prokofiev's 'Peter and the Wolf' and Britten's 'Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra'.
