This is the Djembe/Dance group Lamp Fall in Saint-Louis, Senegal. They perform all over the country, but can be found practicing almost everyday at Le Quai des Arts in Saint-Louis, just listen for the sounds in the late morning or late afternoon. The lead player, Ibu, gives great djembe lessons if you're in the market to learn how to play, just ask anyone in the art center for him. They are a great group of guys and if you're in the area, stop in and check them out.

[ This video is better when watched with sound ] The Lower St. Louis River flows through Minnesota's Jay Cooke State Park south of Duluth. This run was done at the "Fish Flow" which is about 350 cfs. The river is a lot less pushy but more razor sharp rocks are in play. The video in this run includes Octopus Rapids, The Swinging Bridge Falls, and Fin Falls. I am not sure if anyone has run Fin Falls in an open boat... this may have been the first whitewater canoeing run of Fin Falls. This was an incredible day on an incredible river spent with incredible friends.

Several of the king and gentoo penguins that reside indoors at the Saint Louis Zoo's Penguin & Puffin Coast took a walk outside in the snow today with their keepers. Visitors can enjoy the Penguin Parade at 2 pm on Sundays through February 28, 2010 when temperatures are below 50 degrees. The king penguin, native to the sub-Antarctic islands, is one of the largest penguin species, second to the emperor. Its large size, about 33 pounds, helps it cope with the extreme Antarctic cold and allows it to dive deeper than most penguins. The gentoo penguin is about twenty-six inches tall and weighs near twenty pounds. It is the third largest species of penguin. Penguin & Puffin Coast, one of the Zoo's most popular exhibits, is kept a constant 45 degrees year-round. The indoor habitat includes king, rockhopper and gentoo penguins from the Southern Hemisphere, and horned and tufted puffins from the Northern Hemisphere. Visitors can see these sea birds on land and underwater in this unique walk-through exhibit. Bessie Smith (July 9,1892 or April 15,1894 - Sept.26,1937) was Americas most popular female blues singer of the 1920s and '30s. Smith is often regarded as one of the greatest singers of her era, and along with Louis Armstrong, a major influence on subsequent jazz vocalists. n 1920, sales figures for "Crazy Blues," an Okeh Records recording by singer Mamie Smith (no relation) pointed to a new market. The recording industry had not directed its product to blacks, but the success of the record led to a search for female blues singers. Bessie Smith was signed by Columbia Records in 1923 and her first session for Columbia was February 15, 1923. For most of 1923, her records were issued on Columbia's regular A- series; when the label decided to establish a "race records" series, Smith's "Cemetery Blues" was the first issued. She scored a big hit with her first release, a coupling of "Gulf Coast Blues" and "Downhearted Blues," which its composer Alberta Hunter had already turned into a hit on the Paramount label. Smith became a headliner on the black TOBA circuit and rose to become its top attraction in the 1920s. Working a heavy theater schedule during the winter months and doing tent tours the rest of the year (eventually traveling in her own railroad car), Smith became the highest-paid black entertainer of her day.
