Sakara Music - From a 1952 Field Recording in Dahomey (Republic of Benin)
Artist: Adjado Year: 1952 Sakara music is a form of popular Yoruba music based in the traditions of Yoruba people of Nigeria and Republic of Benin (Old Dahomey/Abomey). It is a Moslem-influenced style, mostly in the form of praise songs, that uses only traditional Yoruba instruments such as the solemn-sounding Goje violin, and the small round Sakara drum, which is similar to a tambourine and is beaten with a stick. Sakara music overlays the nasalized, melismatic vocals of Islamic music on the traditional percussion instruments. The music is often brooding and philosophical in mood. One of the first performers of this type of music in Lagos was Abibu Oluwa, who started playing in the 1930s. On his death in 1964 his place in the band was taken by Salami Alabi (Lefty) Balogun (October 1913 - 29 December 1981), a talking drummer, who released over 35 records. Other members of the band included Baba Mukaila, and Joseph (Yussuf) Olatunju (alias Baba l'Egba), who died in 1978, did much to popularize the musical genre and released many records on the Phillips Nigeria label. A street in Abeokuta is named after him. Sakara music had considerable influence on other genres, including Jùjú and Nigerian Hip Hop. Tro Khmer by Sakara Part 7 Song Robam Tra Lok
To hear and to see the 2 generations playing tro together, is amazing. In this video, Sakara practicing her song, Robam Tralok, with her teacher, Um Chhip. When you hear the 2 together you may wonder how the sound likes if we have 3 or 4 or even a dozen of tros together. As you know there are no notes in our traditional songs. You learn to play by hearing. From times to times, um Chhip throwed in a different version of the song and sometimes he forgot what version he was playing and this creates problem for Sakara because she does not know how to tell um Chhip to play the version she likes. Or lets say she wants um Chhip to play a particular part of the song, it is very difficult to tell him. Quite often um Chhip has to repeat the song all over and Sakara has to wait until that part comes up. As challenging as it is, Sakara is able to learn from her master our beautiful songs. I wish I has that talent, but I don't. I strongly believe that some of you after watching this video may have the same talent as Sakara and so get up and find tro and start playing. Good luck.

The way Sakara learns tro is to watch her teacher, uncle Chhip, and to play along with him one hour or so per seesion and to come home practicing some more by watching the video I taped during class. Sakara started her "tro" lesson two years ago. She never knew and never heard these songs prior to now and yet able to play this instrument so beautifully. She said anyone can play tro like her, so long as you keep practicing it. This song will be her last one for this year. She is heading back to college this weekend and I hope she has time to learn new songs next Summer.
