It's the first crash of its kind, but NASA says it doesn't pose a threat to the International Space Station. The accident occurred on Tuesday, creating a massive explosion with much debris scattering through space. Its still unclear what caused the collision, which has become the first-ever involving two intact satellites. The privately-owned American satellite - Iridium - was launched in 1997 and used for satellite telephone networks. The Russian Cosmos satellite was launched in 1993 and, according to NASA and Pentagon officials, had been non-operational for about 10 years. According to NASA, debris creates some small risk to the ISS, which is located below the orbit where the accident took place. However, it will take several weeks before the full magnitude of the collision is determined. There have been minor collisions in space before, but the scale of this crash is unprecedented. The satellites - one weighing about a tonne, the other almost 600 kilogrammes crashed at a speed of 670 km per minute. Officials said the incident will be investigated and analysed. Officals note that there are many hundreds of satellites in space and no road rules regarding their orbits, therefore some people believe such accidents could have been expected.

This was something which had to happen eventually. The orbital debris created by the collision between the two satellites poses a very real threat to the Hubble Space Telescope and Earth Observing Satellite, which are in the higher orbit and nearer the debris field. Both NASA and Roscosmos may have out rightly rejected any risk to the International Space Station but nothing can deny replication of similar collisions given the rise in the number of satellites being launched.

A small piece of Cosmos 2251 satellite debris safely passed by the International Space Station at 2:38a.m. EDT, Saturday March 24 allowing the six Expedition 30 crew members onboard the orbiting complex to exit their Soyuz spacecraft and resume normal activities. The crew sheltered in the two Soyuz spacecraft as a precaution, the third time in station history that a crew has had to shelter in place due to the possibility of a conjunction with orbital debris and the first since June 2011. NASA's Expedition 30 Commander Dan Burbank and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin were in their Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft attached to the Poisk module on the space-facing side of the Zvezda service module, while cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, NASA's Don Pettit and Andre Kuipers of the European Space Agency were in their Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft on the Earth-facing side of the Zarya module. The collision added about 2000 trackable items to the orbital debris catalog. Last night at 12:05 am, troopers assigned to the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Bourne responded to reports of a single car motor vehicle crash on Route 6 eastbound, East of Exit 1, in Bourne that resulted in a fatality. Preliminary investigation by Troopers Michael Kadingo and Jeffery Diotte indicates that a 2001 Toyota 4 Runner was being operated by Nathan Moore, a 32 year old male from Sandwich, Massachusetts. The vehicle was driving eastbound when, for reasons yet unknown, the vehicle rolled over into the median side guardrail where the vehicle came to rest. The Bourne Fire Department extracted Moore from the car where he was pronounced deceased. The facts and circumstances of the crash still remain under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. A chunk of a Russian rocket forced the six astronauts to seek shelter in escape capsules this morning. It was only the third time in 12 years that they've had to take shelter from space junk." ABC Ground control picked up the remnants too late to safely maneuver the ISS out of harm's way, so the six spacemen took cover in their Soyuz spacecraft. The idea being, if there were to be a collision, the Soyuz craft could take them back to earth. As it turns out, the debris passed by about nine miles from the ISS. But before you think this was all a big fuss over nothing, The Telegraph explains just how close that is. "Although nine miles sounds like a long distance on Earth, but in space where both the station and the junk were travelling at 17500 miles an hour in orbit, nobody was taking any chances." And The New York Times focuses on another angle. Is space getting too crowded? "Saturday's episode underscored a recent report by the National Research Council warning that the increasing amount of space debris is threatening to interfere with the space station and working satellites. The nonprofit group warned that the growing amount of debris is threatening to make low-Earth orbit unusable because of the potential for collisions." Astronomers using X-ray data from an ongoing survey by NASA's Swift satellite have solved a decades-long mystery. Why, when most galaxies host giant black holes in their centers, do only about one percent of them emit vast amounts of energy? The new findings confirm that the black holes "light up" when galaxies collide -- and may offer insight into the future behavior of the black hole in our own galaxy. The intense emission from galaxy centers, or nuclei, arises near a supermassive black hole containing between a million and a billion times the sun's mass. Giving off as much as 10 billion times the sun's energy, some of these active galactic nuclei (AGN) -- a class that includes quasars and blazars -- are the most luminous objects in the universe. This simulation follows the collision of two spiral galaxies that harbor giant black holes. The collision merges the black holes and stirs up gas in both galaxies. The merged black hole gorges on the feast and lights up, forming an active galactic nucleus called a quasar and creating a "wind" that blows away much of the galaxy's gas. An unidentified driver, possibly in there late teens to early twenties, was critically injured in a head-on crash on the off-ramp from the Sagamore Bridge to Route 6A in Bourne, Massachusetts Friday (03—2-12) morning around 9:15 AM. According to Bourne Fire Deputy Daniel Doucette at the scene, the victim suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to South Shore Hospital . A medical helicopter was requested to the scene but was unavailable due to weather. A second driver of a pick-up truck suffered serious injuries and was transported to Cape Cod Hospital . According to a news photographer on the scene, the off-ramp from the Sagamore Bridge to Route 6A was covered in black ice at the time of the accident as temperatures hovered around 32 degrees, though it is unclear at this time if that was the cause of the accident.

FALMOUTH, MA - A collision between a 10-wheel dump truck and a Pontiac minivan sent an injured woman to Falmouth Hospital, police at the scene said. A small section of Route 151 just after the intersection with Sam Turner Road east to the Heritage Christian Church was closed immediately after the accident. The crash occurred in front of the church. Police described the injuries to the woman as being minor capecodonline.com
