DLR's ROSAT Satellite Reentry - Updated


Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), Germany's space agency, now predicts that its ROentgen SATellite (ROSAT) X-Ray observatory will deorbit sometime between Friday, October 21 and Monday, October 24. Much of the X-ray satellite will burn up in the atmosphere, although 30 pieces are expected to survive reentry. The largest single fragment could weigh up to 1.7 tons. Aerospace engineers from Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI) used the company's analysis and visualization software to create this video depicting: • ROSAT in its current orbit • The satellite's ground track • Its burn-up in reentry • Statistical debris break-up model • Estimated size of debris region Although it is too early to predict the time and location of the re-entry, DLR says that predictions of the time period will become more refined as the date of reentry draws nearer. Heads up. There are space mitigation agencies within the US government. We have successfully avoided having defunct satellites fall to earth in the past by destroying them with missiles. This happened in 2008 and was bragged about on every news channel. Phobos-Grunt Will Make Its Fiery Return to Earth Next Week Popular Science


The doomed Russian spacecraft is expected to re-enter next Sunday When the German ROSATsatellite fell from the sky back in October--right on the heels of NASA's UARS satellite, which came crashing down in September--we were told that we wouldn't have to worry about any more falling satellites for awhile. Then, Russia launched Phobos-Grunt, and suddenly your carefree days of not worrying about high-speed orbital debris speeding through the atmosphere and slamming into random places across the planet were over. The doomed Russian Mars probe is coming down, probably next Sunday. Phobos-Grunt, as you may recall, was launched into Earth orbit in November, from which point it was supposed to fire its auxiliary engines and set a course for Mars. That never happened, and the orbit of the crippled spacecraft has been decaying ever since as Russian mission handlers have scrambled in vain to save it. With hope of recovery gone, Russian space authorities have now named January 15th as the likely re-entry date for Phobos-Grunt. As with UARS and ROSAT, much of Phobos-Grunt will burn up in the atmosphere. And like its recent predecessors, some of it will not. NASA Satellite Plunging to Earth; Largest Uncontrolled Crash Since Skylab in 1979


A NASA research satellite is expected to hit Earth in the coming days. Most of the six-ton, 35-foot long satellite will burn up on re-entry into the atmosphere, but 26 large chunks are expected to hit Earth's surface. Exactly where they will crash is hard to predict, but NASA does say the satellite is not expected to be over North America when it re-enters. It is the largest satellite to fall back to Earth uncontrolled since Skylab in 1979. The chance of any one person being struck by debris is approximately 1 in 21 trillion, but the odds that someone on Earth might be hit are about 1 in 3200. In 1997, an Oklahoma woman got hit by a piece of space junk and lived to tell about it.

The Corona satellites were used for photographic surveillance of the Soviet Union (USSR), the People's Republic of China, and other areas beginning in June 1959 and ending in May 1972. The name of this program is sometimes seen as "CORONA", but its actual name "Corona" was a codeword, not an acronym for anything. The Corona project was pushed forward especially following the shooting down of a U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union in May 1960. The Corona satellites were designated KH-1, KH-2, KH-3, KH-4, KH-4A and KH-4B. The unit I'm resetting is a Feb 2006 Alpine BMW Business CD53 Radio BMW Parts Number 65 12 6 961 215 that has MP3, HD Radio, Sirius Satellite Radio, and iPod Data/Auxillary Capabilities. This unit was ordered online but came set for another region. If your radio came like this unit did you will need to follow the steps in this video to unlock, reset and code your radio to your region. You can also see hidden information (like the production date and SV number) on the radio as well as set your antenna sensitivity and play around with your DSP settings. After driving several hundred miles I was left with one overwhelming emotion: disappointment. I loved the sleek lines and the clever technology; the huge boot swallowed the largest load. But none of this could hide the car's Achilles heel: its engine. The 177bhp V6 petrol engine fitted to the E240 sounded harsh when pushed, performance felt moderate and after 800 miles it had averaged only 21mpg. But my reaction was out of step; almost universally the car was heaped with praise. And it was 18 months before my opinion was to change. This time I drove an E270 diesel. It was blessed with virtually identical power to the petrol car on paper but in reality the leap in torque produced a smooth wall of power that made the car genuinely fun to drive, and it also averaged close to 40mpg. At last I understood what everyone had been saying: this was quite possibly the best executive car money could buy. I also tried the more modestly priced E220 diesel with 150bhp. It still felt good, and the 3.2 litre E320 diesel with 204bhp was a real hoot. With these cars Mercedes proved that not only had diesel engine technology caught up with the petrol equivalents but actually eclipsed them. Asteroid Discovery From 1980 - 2010


Video Created by Scott Manley, this is a view of the solar system showing the locations of all the asteroids starting in 1980, as asteroids are discovered they are added to the map and highlighted white so you can pick out the new ones. The final colour of an asteroids indicates how closely it comes to the inner solar system. Earth Crossers are Red Earth Approachers (Perihelion less than 1.3AU) are Yellow All Others are Green Notice now the pattern of discovery follows the Earth around its orbit, most discoveries are made in the region directly opposite the Sun. You'll also notice some clusters of discoveries on the line between Earth and Jupiter, these are the result of surveys looking for Jovian moons. Similar clusters of discoveries can be tied to the other outer planets, but those are not visible in this video. As the video moves into the mid 1990's we see much higher discovery rates as automated sky scanning systems come online. Most of the surveys are imaging the sky directly opposite the sun and you'll see a region of high discovery rates aligned in this manner. At the beginning of 2010 a new discovery pattern becomes evident, with discovery zones in a line perpendicular to the Sun-Earth vector. These new observations are the result of the WISE (Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer) which is a space mission that's tasked with imaging the entire sky in infrared wavelengths.
