Satyricon (pronounced: suh-Teer-I-con) is a Norwegian black metal band. The band credits their first album, Dark Medieval Times, with starting a black metal sub-genre dubbed "medieval metal." The album showed off the fascination Satyricon had with the Middle Ages, along with the raw black metal with blastbeats produced by Frost mixed with acoustic guitar and flute. On the next album The Shadowthrone this medieval spirit was preserved. Regarding one of their latest albums, Volcano, the frontman of the band, Satyr, stated in a press release/biography, published on their homepage, that "the music is rock based but more extreme; it is black metal pushing the boundaries that began with bands like Venom and Bathory, reinventing ourselves based on a foundation of rock oriented black metal is our philosophy." It resulted in a total of 4 Awards for Volcano being, the Norwegian Grammy for "Best Metal Album", an Alarm award for "Fuel For Hatred" in the category for "Song of the Year", as well as The Alarm Award for "Metal Album of the Year" and The Oslo awards for "Best Overall Album". They have many famous fans: Phil Anselmo, James Hetfield, Joey Jordison, Bjørn Einar Romøren, and many more. They have toured with Pantera, among others. Most recently, the band released a new studio album, Now, Diabolical. Is a 1969 Italian film by Federico Fellini. It is loosely based on the Petronius novel Satyricon,a series of bawdy and satirical episodes written during the reign of the emperor Nero and set in imperial Rome. Satyricon is a Norwegian black metal band founded in Oslo, Norway in 1990 by Czral (Carl-Michael Eide, of Ved Buens Ende, Ulver and Virus) and Wargod. Sigurd Satyr Wongraven (also in Thorns, Storm and Wongraven) took over lead vocals in 1991. A year later renowned drummer Kjetil Vidar Frost Haraldstad joined the band. Frost has appeared in 1349, Keep of Kalessin, Gorgoroth, and Gehenna. Members of many other black metal bands have contributed to Satyricon either in the studio or live, including Samoth and Ihsahn of Emperor, Fenriz and Nocturno Culto of Darkthrone, and A O. Gronbech of Keep of Kalessin. Satyricon credit their 1993 first album, Dark Medieval Times, with starting a sub-genre of black metal termed medieval metal. The album displayed their fascination with the Middle Ages, blending extreme metal with acoustic guitar and flute. Everything goes better with black metal. "Hvite krists død" means "The death of christ" in English. *UPDATE* As many of you have pointed out; the literal translation would be "the death of the white christ". However, the name Satyricon use is the name used by the saga kings in the early middle ages, or the so called viking period. During this time it was common to have a descriptive secondary name (or epithet) for kings and great warriors. Like, "Eric, the Red" and "Olav the Holy". They also named kings from lands outside of Scandinavia in the same fashion, like "Yaroslav the Wise", the russian grand prince. Within the Viking mind set, Jesus Christ was a conqueror of death and had won a great victory. His epithet would be "Hvite" or "the white". The harbinger of the light. Satyricon's song is a battlecry against christianity and christians. During the time "The Shadowthrone" came out it seems it was quite fashionable among black metallers to regard themselves as vikings or opponents of christianity within this warrior paradigm. The use of "Hvite krist" is therefore an anachronism. I chose the unidiomatic translation, regarding it as potentially misleading to use "the white christ". lt did not confuse most of you, but I can't really see why this is such a big deal. For the few of you who might find this video offensive, it just makes some light fun of a shitty movie.
