It is popularly known as the "Death and the Maiden" Quartet because the second movement is adapted from the piano accompaniment to Schubert's 1817 song (or lied), "Death and the Maiden". Ariel Dorfman's 1991 play "Death and the Maiden" and its 1994 film adaptation (directed by Roman Polanski) take their names from the quartet.

Barry Lyndon, Trio op 100 (Schubert)
Schubert op 100 Barry Lyndon (1975) is an award-winning period film by Stanley Kubrick based on the novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon (1844) by William Makepeace Thackeray. It recounts the exploits of an unscrupulous 18th century Irish adventurer (Barry Lyndon né Redmond Barry), particularly his rise and fall within English society. In the film one can recognize the nostalgia, that it is not so much the downfall of the aristocratic world that is being mourned. When Bryan dies, Barry, realizing that his life has turned into a fiasco, loses his zest for living once and for all. By then the images, already having anticipated this moment for some considerable time, to the sound of Schubert's piano trio, set the tone for a melancholy lamentation on time elapsing and the loss of innocence and vitality. Schubert - Serenade
A video I made with Franz Schubert's "Serenade". Franz Peter Schubert (January 31, 1797 November 19, 1828) was an Austrian composer. He wrote some 600 Lieder, nine symphonies (including the famous "Unfinished Symphony"), liturgical music, operas, some incidental music, and a large body of chamber and solo piano music. He is particularly noted for his original melodic and harmonic writing. Schubert was born into a musical family, and received formal musical training through much of his childhood. While Schubert had a close circle of friends and associates who admired his work (amongst them the prominent singer Johann Michael Vogl), wide appreciation of his music during his lifetime was limited at best. He was never able to secure adequate permanent employment, and for most of his career he relied on the support of friends and family. He made some money from published works, and occasionally gave private musical instruction. In the last year of his life he began to receive wider acclaim. He died at the age of 31, apparently of complications from syphilis. Interest in Schubert's work increased dramatically in the decades following his death. Composers like Franz Liszt, Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn discovered, collected, and championed his works in the 19th century, as did musicologist Sir George Grove. Franz Schubert is now widely considered to be one of the greatest composers in the Western tradition.

In answer to a request... Schubert wrote no fewer than five versions of this song, and also based his Trout Quintet, D667 on it. It's a charming mini-drama, reflecting the naturalist theme of the Romantic period and Schubert's own sense of playfulness. In the text, the narrator describes looking at a trout in the water, and his indignation when a fisherman catches it by unfair means. The famous six-note phrase that forms the majority of the accompaniment evokes the image of a fish literally rising to the bait. The vocal melody is equally light, until the moment when the fisherman muddies up the water to catch the fish, when both voice and piano change to a darker tone, creating the sense of a little drama enacted.
