"The original Z3 seemed like a reactionary car," says Dan, "a concept BMW didn't really believe in themselves. But everyone had to respond after the Mazda Miata reinvigorated the demand for small two-seat sports cars." And the result seemed like an über-Miata, too — except the super-suit didn't fit well. BMW must have felt the same way, because the redesigned car received significant changes and a new name: Z4. Attempts to tailor the suit included a wheelbase stretched by nearly 2 inches, a stiffer chassis and a much improved rear suspension. But the magic still wasn't there and the Bangle-administration styling was polarizing, if not confrontational. Doubters like Dan remained unconvinced. "I remained unconvinced," says Dan. So the recent arrival of the new 2009 BMW Z4 sDrive35i roadster at our offices was met with considerable suspicion. Some approached it carrying a grudge, in fact, because its new power-retractable hardtop signals the end of dedicated fixed-roof versions like the M coupe, considered by some to be the best thing about previous Z roadsters.

While returning a reasonable 30mpg average. I love this car but a change in cirumstances mean it has to be sold. The latest in BMWs long and successful roadster family has been revealed. The all-new BMW Z4 will go on sale in May 2009 and features a host of innovations never before showcased during BMWs 75 years of roadster heritage. The BMW Z4 is the first to come with a two-piece, electro-hydraulically operated Retractable Hard-Top roof that can be raised or lowered in 20 seconds. The new roadster is also the first vehicle to be offered with Adaptive M Suspension. Electronically controlled dampers offer three different configurations and lower the ride height by up to 10mm for a more dynamic drive. By way of comparison, the Sport+ setting of the new car is comparable to the outgoing Z4s standard ride comfort level. The standard Drive Dynamic Control function is another first and allows the driver to alter, depending on model specification, the throttle and steering response, level of ride comfort, Dynamic Stability Control response and, on automatic or Double Clutch Transmission cars, gear change times. A BMW remix by Kelleners Sport. -Info- German tuner Kelleners Sport has turned the BMW Z4 sDrive35is into a real rager. The power upgrade involves a tuning of the 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder unit up to an output of 405 PS (298 kW / 400 bhp) and 539 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque. That's quite a gain over the already impressive series output of 340 PS (250kW/ 335 bhp) and 450Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque - 500Nm (369 lb-ft) with overboost. Wheels are available in 19-inch and 20-inch dimensions in either Hamburg or Berlin rims. Special lowering springs reduce the ride height of the Z4 by 20 mm at the front axle and 10 mm at the rear. On the inside, the tuner adds a three-spoke sport steering wheel, aluminium pedals and foot rests along with velour floor mats. Bespoke interior finishes in leather with wood trims are also on offer by individual customer request.
