On July 28, 2008, the nation's first Littoral Combat Ship, Freedom (LCS 1), put to sea for the first time, marking the beginning of Builder's Sea Trials for the first-in-class coastal surface combatant. The first trials for the agile 378-foot Freedom, designed and built by a Lockheed Martin led industry team, are being conducted in Lake Michigan.

(cell phone video only - see below) This week I had the unique opportunity to go out on sea trials on the FNDY Fireboat 343! This on-board video shoes the first full speed runs (it FLIES!!) and the first firing of the fire registers (water cannons). Even using only one pump and two registers, it was enough to push us backwards over 2 knots into a strong tail wind. Sorry for the quality - they didn't want me shooting high-def until the boat receives its final coat of paint. I think it looked great as is, but this is an important boat and they want it to look perfect. I will do my best to get on-board with the HD camera next time!

Varyag was to be an Admiral Kuznetsov class multirole aircraft carrier of the Soviet Union. She was known as Riga when her keel was laid down at Shipyard 444 (now Nikolayev South) in Nikolayev December 6, 1985. Design of the carrier was undertaken by the Nevskoye Planning and Design Bureau. She was launched December 4, 1988, but she was renamed Varyag (Varangian) in late 1990, after the famous Russian cruiser. Construction stopped by 1992, with the ship structurally complete but without electronics. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, ownership was transferred to Ukraine; the ship was laid up, unmaintained, then stripped. In early 1998, she lacked engines, a rudder, and much of her operating systems, and was put up for auction. It was purchased at auction for US $20 million by Chong Lot Travel Agency, a company widely believed to be a front for Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Chong Lot stated that the ship would become a floating entertainment center and casino in the Chinese SAR of Macau. This was proven incorrect as the ship was docked in Dalian and painted PLAN grey. Defense news and intelligence sources indicated that the ship had been refitted and would be put through sea trials in mid-2011. On June 8, 2011 the chief of China's General Staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) confirmed that China's first aircraft carrier was under construction. High Speed Steering Tests during Builder's Sea Trials --- Sorry it's so hard to hear... the ship is going 30+ knots and the sound of the engines is almost deafening. If we tilt really far, we'll pull a smooth criminal. If we tilt even further, it'll be an 'N sync music video. ---- 3-27-2009 CORRECTION I was informed that my directions were wrong. When the chairs slide to the right, we are actually turning PORT and when the chairs slide to the left, we are actually turning STARBOARD. If anyone can tell me why this is (why the ship leans in the direction away from the turn), please let me know. Addendum: I was informed it was because it tilts over. The reason this seemed weird to me is because normally in a car we overcorrect.

This video shows the design, development and sea trials of the succesful EU Framework 7 funded project CORES - New Components for Ocean Renewable Energy Systems. This project was coordinated by the Hydraulics and Maritime Research Centre in Cork and had 13 Partners from 7 EU countries, all of whom contributed to the final sucessful outcome. Within the partners was a unique mix of Industry and Academia.
