As a teen, Joseph Simmons was recruited by his older brother, an up and coming hip-hop promoter named Russell Simmons, to be the onstage DJ for rapper Kurtis Blow--who was managed by Russell. Performing as "DJ Run, Son of Kurtis Blow," the younger Simmons soon began trading rhymes with Kurtis Blow and beat-boxing for the audience. He would often come back to Hollis and play his taped performances for his friend Darryl McDaniels. Previously, McDaniels had been more focused on athletics than music, but soon began to DJ after purchasing a set of turntables. Simmons convinced McDaniels to start rapping, and though McDaniels wouldn't perform in public, he soon began writing rhymes and calling himself "Easy D." Simmons and McDaniels (who, over time, had overcome his early stage fright) started hanging around Two-Fifths Park in Hollis in late 1980, hoping to rap for the local DJs that performed and competed there. The most popular local DJ at the park was a youngster named Jason "Jazzy Jase" Mizell. Mizell was known for his flashy wardrobe and b-boy attitude; but had had troubles with the law as a teen. From 1993 Album: "Black Reign"..... Latifah started beatboxing for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was one of the members of the original version of the Flavor Unit, which, at that time, was a crew of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka "DJ Mark the 45 King" made a demo recording of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to the host of Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. The song got the attention of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross, who signed Latifah and in 1988 issued her first single, "Wrath of My Madness". Freddy helped Latifah sign with Tommy Boy Records, which released Latifah's first album All Hail the Queen in 1989, when she was nineteen.[4] That year, she appeared as Referee on the UK label Music of Life album "1989—The Hustlers Convention (live)". Jake One's long history of production began in 1992, when he was inspired to begin creating beats by Sensimilla producer Hussein and Vitamin D (Derrick Brown). After collaborating with underground hip-hop artists Boom Bap Project and Sharpshooters, Jake's production was usurped by the commercial world of rap—artists 50 Cent, Kutfather, Snoop Dogg, G-Unit and E-40 have either directly featured his production on their albums or highlighted his work on full-lengths and compilations. Jake's beats appear on records released by Rhymesayers Entertainment, Quannum, Epitaph Records, EMI Canada, Interscope and Columbia. Crossfader's Darek Mazzone interviewed Jake in his Seattle Capitol Hill studio, where he discussed his vinyl obsession, musical modus operandi, and the stealthy and humble way in which he represents Seattle hip-hop for the United States in totality.
