Secular Humanism

www.facebook.com ... "Are You a Secular Humanist?" by • www.youtube.com --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- ATHEIST (n.): one without a belief in, or one who lacks belief in, the existence of god or gods. YOU MAY BE A SECULAR HUMANIST IF: • You try to live an ethical and fulfilling life without religious belief. • You think science and reason lead to more reliable knowledge than faith. • You support secular government and an open society that guarantees human rights for all. • You make sense of the world using reason, experience and shared human values. • You see no convincing evidence for gods, the supernatural, or life after death. • You believe that moral values are properly founded on human empathy and scientific understanding. • You believe we must live this life on the basis that it is the only life we'll have -- that, therefore, we must make the most of it for ourselves, each other, and our world. (List courtesy of The Institute for Humanist Studies) SECULAR HUMANISM is a humanist philosophy that upholds reason, ethics, and justice, and specifically rejects the supernatural and the spiritual as the basis of moral reflection and decision-making. Like other types of humanism, secular humanism is a life stance that focuses on the way human beings can lead good, happy and functional lives. The term "secular humanism" was coined in the 20th century to make a clear distinction from "religious humanism ...

Discovering Religion: Ep 20 - Secular vs. Biblical Morality

The twentieth installment of my original series, "Discovering Religion". This episode begins the miniseries on morality by comparing and contrasting concepts like subjective/objective and secular/biblical moralities. Now that we have exposed God's true moral nature and found that our sense of right and wrong comes from somewhere outside the Bible, we can begin to explore the possible evolutionary origins of morality and how science informs our shared principles of conduct. Christians and other monotheists absolutely HATE the idea that morality can be based in science and I am very much looking forward to producing these episodes. However, please note my videos are extremely time-consuming to produce and unfortunately I do not have a lot of free time. I try make videos as often as I can, so I hope everyone understands why such time passes between episodes. Thank you all for your support of this series, I very humbled by all the attention my channels has been getting recently. What Atheists Can Learn from the LGBT Movement :: Secular Student Alliance 2010 Annual Conference

Keynote Speaker Greta Christina discusses what the atheist movement learn from the LGBT movement? The atheist movement is already modeling itself on the LGBT movement in many ways: most obviously with its focus on coming out of the closet. What else can the Atheist movement learn from the LGBT movement both from its successes and its failures? For those who have heard Greta Christina speak at SSA conferences in the past: this is a longer, significantly more fleshed-out version of the talk she gave at both Stanford and Harvard. In this talk, Greta discusses coming out; making atheism a safe place to come out into; defusing the ongoing battles between the firebrands and the diplomats in our movement; avoiding squabbles about language and self-definition; making our movement more diverse; preparing for success and the mainstreaming that will almost certainly accompany it; and other lessons that can be learned from the history of the LGBT movement.

Faith has traditionally played a significant role among African Americans, while science has been marginalized. Lawrence Krauss: 2011 "Cosmic Connections"

socraticmama.com [Inspiration & Support for Secular Families] Conway Hall, London Sunday 16th Oct. 2011 "Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust" Lawrence Krauss Professor of Earth and Space Exploration, Lawrence Krauss, isn't immune to small irritations of daily living. However, he can see the bigger picture. In this 'secular sermon' he shows how each of us is connected to the cosmos in ways we'd never imagine. From the stardust we're made of, to the atoms we breathe, to the curving of space time that governs the way we make our way through traffic jams, to time travel itself. Dr Lawrence Krauss is a prolific and popular writer and an indefatigable fighter for science and critical thinking. At Arizona State University, he is Foundation Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and Physics Departments, Associate Director of the Beyond Center, and Co-Director of the Cosmology Initiative. He is also Director of the exciting new Origins Initiative, which explores questions ranging from the origin of the Universe to the origins of human culture and cognition. He has studied and explained matters from the microscopic to astronomical. In performing with the Cleveland Orchestra, judging at the Sundance Film Festival, and his Grammy nominated notes for Telarc Records, Krauss has also ...
