Pete Seeger: Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

On July 26, 1956, the House of Representatives voted 373 to 9 to cite Pete Seeger and seven others (including playwright Arthur Miller) for contempt, as they failed to cooperate with House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in their attempts to investigate alleged subversives and communists. Pete Seeger testified before the HUAC in 1955. In one of Pete's darkest moments, when his personal freedom, his career, and his safety were in jeopardy, a flash of inspiration ignited this song. The song was stirred by a passage from Mikhail Sholokhov's novel "And Quie Flows the Don". Around the world the song traveled and in 1962 at a UNICEF concert in Germany, Marlene Dietrich, Academy Award-nominated German-born American actress, first performed the song in French, as "Qui peut dire ou vont les fleurs?" Shortly after she sang it in German. The song's impact in Germany just after WWII was shattering. It's universal message, "let there be peace in the world" did not get lost in its translation. To the contrary, the combination of the language, the setting, and the great lyrics has had a profound effect on people all around the world. May it have the same effect today and bring renewed awareness to all that hear it.

Pete Seeger on "The Johnny Cash Show" complete and uncut

Folk music and civil-rights icon Pete Seeger brought his brand of straight-talking this-banjo-kills-fascists* political activism to "The Johnny Cash Show" on March 4, 1970. It's clear from this clip that Cash is the student and Seeger is the master as he and Cash rip through the Grand-Ole-Opry-friendly classic American singalong folk tune "Worried Man Blues." * This has been edited by Mikerickson01 into a much better description: Pete Seeger's banjo surrounds hate and forces it to surrender.

Pete Seeger - Wimoweh & Flowers Gone

This is from a controversial episode of the Smothers Brothers. Originally, Pete sang his song "Waist Deep In The Big Muddy" in between these two songs but CBS deemed it too political to air and deleted it from the broadcast. However, he did perform the song on a subsequent broadcast and this time CBS allowed it to air. That version is available on Youtube: www.youtube.com
Pete Seeger: Waist Deep in the Big Muddy

Aired on CBS at the height of the Vietnam War, this song holds just as much truth today... It was back in 1941. I was a member of a good platoon. We were on maneuvers in Lou'siana one night By the light of the moon. The Captain told us to ford a river. That's how it all begun. We were knee deep in the Big Muddy, And the big fool said to push on. The Sergeant said, "Sir, are you sure This is the best way back to the base?" "Sergeant, go on, I've forded this river About a mile above this place. It'll be a little soggy, but just keep sloggin'. We'll soon be on dry ground." We were waist deep in the Big Muddy, And the big fool said to push on. The Sergeant said, "Sir, with all this equipment, No man will be able to swim." "Sergeant, don't be a Nervous Nelly," The Captain said to him. "All we need is a little determination. Men, follow me. I'll lead on." We were neck deep in the Big Muddy, And the big fool said to push on. All at once the moon clouded over. We heard a gurglin' cry. A few seconds later the Captain's helmet Was all that floated by. The Sergeant said, "Turn around, men. I'm in charge from now on." And we just made it out of the Big Muddy With the Captain dead and gone. We stripped and dived and found his body Stuck in the old quicksand. I guess he didn't know that the water was deeper Then the place he'd once before been. Another stream had joined the Big Muddy About a half mile from where we'd gone. We were lucky to escape from the Big Muddy When the big fool ...
Banks of Marble - by Pete Seeger

Pete Seeger singing the classic "workers' rights" tune from the 1950's. Lyrics below: BANKS ARE MADE OF MARBLE I've traveled round this country From shore to shining shore. It really made me wonder The things I heard and saw. I saw the weary farmer, Plowing sod and loam; I heard the auction hammer A knocking down his home. CHORUS: But the banks are made of marble, With a guard at every door, And the vaults are stuffed with silver, That the farmer sweated for. I saw the seaman standing Idly by the shore. I heard the bosses saying, Got no work for you no more. But the banks are made of marble, With a guard at every door, And the vaults are stuffed with silver, That the seaman sweated for. I saw the weary miner, Scrubbing coal dust from his back, I heard his children cryin', Got no coal to heat the shack. But the banks are made of marble, With a guard at every door, And the vaults are stuffed with silver, That the miner sweated for. I've seen my brothers working Throughout this mighty land; I prayed we'd get together, And together make a stand. FINAL CHORUS: Then we'd own those banks of marble, With a guard at every door; And we'd share those vaults of silver, That we have sweated for. Words and Music by Les Rice

Talking Union - Pete Seeger

Talking Union by Millard Lampell, Lee Hays and Pete Seeger, 1941 The Almanac Singers, Woodie Guthrie, Lee Hays, Millard Lampell and Pete Seeger Now, if you want higher wages let me tell you what to do You got to talk to the workers in the shop with you. You got to build you a union, got to make it strong, But if you all stick together, boys, it won't be long. You get shorter hours, better working conditions, Vacations with pay. Take your kids to the seashore. It ain't quite this simple, so I better explain Just why you got to ride on the union train. 'Cause if you wait for the boss to raise your pay, We'll all be a-waitin' 'til Judgment Day. We'll all be buried, gone to heaven, St. Peter'll be the straw boss then. Now you know you're underpaid but the boss says you ain't; He speeds up the work 'til you're 'bout to faint. You may be down and out, but you ain't beaten, You can pass out a leaflet and call a meetin'. Talk it over, speak your mind, Decide to do somethin' about it. Course, the boss may persuade some poor damn fool To go to your meetin' and act like a stool. But you can always tell a stool, though, that's a fact, He's got a yaller streak a-runnin' down his back. He doesn't have to stool, he'll always get along On what he takes out of blind men's cups. You got a union now, and you're sittin' pretty, Put some of the boys on the steering committee. The boss won't listen when one guy squawks, But he's got to listen when the union talks. He'd better, be mighty lonely ...
Which Side Are You On -- Pete Seeger

In the mountains of Kentucky in 1931, the coal miners of Harlan County went on strike. Officers hired by the mining company roamed the countryside hunting for the union leaders. The independent coal miners fought back gallantly against the hired company deputies and blood was spilled on both sides. "Which Side Are You On," was written by Florence Reece, the wife of Sam Reece, a union leader who had escaped into the Kentucky mountains for safety. Class warfare continues in the United States and in most nations throughout the world. Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, and Millard Lampell of the Almanac Singers made this song famous in 1941. - Spadecaller

Pete Seeger Live - new protest song about BP oil spill in gulf coast on Banjo w James Maddock guitar

On July 23th 2010 Pete Seeger performed live at a Gulf Coast Oil Spill fundraiser at The City Winery in New York City. There, he unveiled to the public his new protest song about the BP oil spill entitled "God's Counting on Me, God's Counting on You." Backing up Pete's singing and banjo picking is the singer/songwriter James Maddock on acoustic guitar. All proceeds of this concert went to the Gulf Restoration Network. The song was written by Lorre Wyatt and Pete Seeger. The show was produced and hosted by Richard Barone. The video was edited and mixed by Matthew Billy. The audio is a mixture of the microphones on stage and the camera microphone behind the audience. The stage microphones picked up the singing and banjo playing while the camera microphone picked up the audience singing along and clapping. Lyrics: When we look and we can see things are not what they should be God's counting on me, God's counting on you When we look and see things that should not be God's counting on me, God's counting on you Hopin' we'll all pull through, Hoping we'll all pull through, Hopin' we'll all pull through Me and you. Peggy Seeger's "Gonna Be An Engineer" - Unofficial Animation by Ken Wong

"Gonna Be An Engineer" by Peggy Seeger. Animation by Ken Wong. I really like this song, and was compelled to bring some visual life to it. Note 1: This is not an authorized video. Note 2: This is going to sound weird, but I chose to make the characters in this video white because when I listen to this song I picture a stereotypical 1950s Hollywood family. Also Peggy Seeger is white, and so is Peggy Olson from Mad Men. (If you're a Mad Men fan, you'll immediately pick up on the connections between this song and the show.) The only reason I mention this is because I think this is a powerful song and I don't want the universal appeal of its message to be constrained to a single visual depiction. This note may seem unnecessary, but to the folks who evaluate media representation, I hope this helps you understand my thoughts. Note 3: Enough thinking - ENJOY this wonderful song!
