Classic Game Room HD - SEGA CD console review, Mega CD!

Classic Game Room HD reviews the SEGA CD add-on for the Sega Genesis video game console! Or the Mega CD for those of you with Megadrives. Same thing, different colors and name. The Sega CD was originally released by Sega in 1992, updated with the model 2 in 1994/1995. It plays.. you guessed it, SEGA CD games! The MegaCD is a pretty cool device that attached to your Mega Drive (which is Mega rad) and plays compact discs with awesome video games on them like Android Assault, Silpheed, Robo Aleste and Sewer Shark. CD media is different than cartridges and back in the day this was pretty high technology. Should you buy a Sega CD? Will your MD collection be better off if kept company by a stack of Sega CD games? Well... yes. Classic Game Room goes into great detail to look over the Mega CD and review how it works, functions and operates. CGRHD is the money bomb when it comes to retro gaming reviews. Word up!

Snatcher Intro (Sega CD)

Snatcher is a cyberpunk-themed adventure game written and directed by Hideo Kojima. It was developed and published by Konami. Originally released in Japan for the NEC PC-8801 and MSX2 in 1988, it was remade for the PC-Engine in 1992 and ported to the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn in 1996. It was released for the Sega CD in North America and its counterpart, the Mega CD in Europe, in 1994, in what is the game's first and only official English version. Snatcher has gained a small cult following due to its mature storytelling, adult themes and (in later versions) voice acting. It was heavily influenced by various sci-fi and noir films, most notably Blade Runner (main character and city views), The Terminator (the snatchers) and Dune (random, freemen)

SegaCD Hardware Scaling and Rotation Clips

Many people felt that the SegaCD didn't offer much over the standard Genesis besides better music and grainy FMV. As you can see from this video, that is not the case. NOTE: Yes, I know Bloodshot came out on cartridge and ran the same, however I did not know this at the time I made this video. Please forgive the oversight and enjoy everything else. These are clips from many games that use the hardware scaling and rotation feature built into the SegaCD. Granted, some of it is not that great, but this goes to show you that the hardware was indeed used to provide games that could not be done in the same manner on the cartridge systems at the time (with the exception of SonicCD's special stages, which I believe the SNES could do even better than the SegaCD did them). The SNES could not scale sprites, and the Neo Geo could not rotate or do perspective due to its complete lack of axis's. The SegaCD can do all of these things on both backgrounds and sprites. Recorded from real hardware (Genesis 1 with a SegaCD 1).

Classic Game Room HD - SILPHEED for Sega CD review

Classic Game Room was the FIRST classic video game review show on the Internet in 1999. Returning in 2008 with new episodes, Classic Game Room breaks out a review of SILPHEED for the Sega CD add-on for the Sega Genesis Megadrive 16-bit video game console. The Mega Drive had a few short lived add-ons like the SegaCD and 32x. Silpheed originally came out years earlier, I had a copy of it for the PC back in the day. This version uses an early polygon graphical system and looks dates, but plays as well as any of the best SHMUPS out today. This is a tremendous SHMUP vertical scrolling space shooter where you pilot the lone spaceship against wave after wave of alien bad guys. Blow them up with a variety of weapons and power ups in this 3D universe created for the Sega in 1993. Rockin' electric music thumps away as you blast those bad guys into space dust! Silpheed may not be one of the best shooters ever made, but it is a sleeper hit that holds up well against today's games because of the well created gameplay and difficulty. Maniac shooters like Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga are better known now, but Silpheed does not disappoint as you can see from the footage. This game should be made into a new 2D shooter with 3-D elements for the PS3, Xbox 360 Live Arcade or Wii. There was a Silpheed released for the PS2 called Silpheed Lost Planet. Be sure to watch the original Classic Game Room episodes. Classic Game Room was the original classic video game review show on the Internet in <b>...</b>

Classic Game Room - JAGUAR XJ220 for Sega CD review

Classic Game Room reviews JAGUAR XJ220 for Sega CD from 1993, a racing game where you drive the exotic supercar in a variety of races all over the world! The Jaguar XJ-220 was a competing vehicle to the Ferrari F40 and Porsche 959 (ironically, both of those cars were in Test Drive II The Duel). It may not have sold well due to it's obscene price tag and sales issues but it does star in its very own video game on the Sega Genesis add-on, the Sega CD (or Mega CD). Jaguar XJ220 is an Out Run style driving game with good controls and excellent 16-bit graphics that, like a real Jaguar, suffers from a few issues that prevent it from being great. Bizarre cornering and bland track design make this game less exciting than it could be yet it remains playable and fun. This CGR review of Jaguar XJ220 for Sega CD has gameplay from Jaguar XJ 220 showing this supercar racing video game play in action.

Classic Game Room - TOMCAT ALLEY Sega CD review

Tomcat Alley video review. Classic Game Room reviews TOMCAT ALLEY for Sega CD (Mega CD), a FMV Full Motion Video button prompt style videgame which was released in 1994 as a Sega TruVideo production. Play as the co-pilot in an F-14 Tomcat fighting against waves of cold war era ex-Soviet bad guys trying to destroy the USA! Move your exciting cursor around the screen and click on things and lock on to enemy jets and helicopters to shoot them down. Tomcat Alley has abysmal gameplay but awesome cut scenes with cheesy B-movie style and fun editing that changes depending on your actions. It even features a girl from a Bond movie! This CGR Tomcat Alley review has gameplay from Tomcat Alley on Sega CD showing jet fighter air combat video game play in HD action from Sega Mega CD.

CGRundertow SNATCHER for Sega CD Video Game Review

Snatcher Review for Sega CD. Snatcher is a gripping adventure game originally released for computer systems in Japan in the late 80s. This cyberpunk adventure shows a lot of influence from great films like 1982's Blade Runner, and Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear fame crafts a great, original gaming experience from it. Bioroid robots are killing and taking the places of citizen of Neo Kobe City, a city built on the Inland Sea off the coast of Japan in 2047. Gillian Seed, our not-all-that-cliché-of-a-main-character-even-though-he-has-amensia, has just joined the JUNKER team to combat the bioroid penance, known as Snatchers. Snatcher's fast pace and engaging story will have you on the edge of your seat for the whole ride. While the cost of admission is a little high, this Sega CD game is well worth every cent. Snatcher for the Sega CD was released in 1994, but saw remakes and ports on Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation, a spiritual sequel in the Sega Saturn game Policenaughts, and other games like Super Deformed Snatcher. This CGRundertow review of Snatcher on the Sega CD features gameplay and commentary from CGR's Jonathan. Classic Game Room HD reviews SONIC CD for Sega CD from 1993! This awesome side scrolling platformer uses all of the CD's abilities to deliver awesome music with crystal clear compact disc sound with 1980's laser beam technology! Sonic CD is widely regarded as one of the best Sonic adventures and once you play it you'll see why. Solid 2D side scrolling gameplay mixed with a clever future / past system, enormous levels and an endless array of scoring possibilities makes Sonic CD the Sonic game for fans of old school Sonic the Hedgehog videogames. Batman Returns Mega CD/SEGA CD

Well here's me playing the amazing ( Batman Returns for the Mega/SEGA CD. The 1st game to really show the power of the system, thanks the genius programming skills of a certain John O'Brien. While XJ220 was the 1st Mega CD that I can remember using the ASCI chip inside the Mega CD for the whole game, Batman Returns was really the 1st game to push the system. All the press would love people to believe , that it was Thunder Hawk/Thunder Strike, that showed what the Mega CD could do, which always annoyed me, as Batman Returns came out months before Thunder Hawk, run at full screen (unlike TH) , had a better frame rate update, it used the full colours pallet of the Mega Drive (unlike TH), had more Parallax scrolling, plus a great semi 3d effect on the sides of the buildings, which gave them depth and made them look so solid. So don't always believe what you read, this really was the game to show the Mega CD and it had a better engine, that's to the Mega CD genius that was John O'Brien, how I think runs a coffee shop in Ireland, which to me is such a waste of quite brilliant programmer (he also wrote some great engines on the Mega Drive and ST act). Its just a shame SEGA never saw the talent this man had and singed him up to handle Mega CD ports of Outrun, Power Drift, Super Hang On, instead of going down the FMV route. What ever, I will always be thankful to John O'Brien for his genius work on the Mega CD, he along with GameArts really pushed the Mega CD to its limits and <b>...</b>

Adventures of Batman & Robin (Sega CD)

Here is the opening cinema, and subsequent driving level and cutscene, to Adventures of Batman & Robin for the Sega CD. This game came out at the tale end of the Sega CDs life span and, while the game isn't that great, it DID show off some hidden talents of the Sega CD. First, the scaling in the driving levels is very smooth...but the controls are horrid :( Secondly, the animation, though grainy, is superb full screen FMV. The animation was done by the actual animated shows team and is basically a "lost episode" and its a great episode to have :)
WWF Rage in the Cage Sega CD 1

The only wrestling game released for the Sega CD, Rage in the cage is mostly just an update on the previous game, Royal Rumble. The game's claim to fame is the inclusion of the cage match, and was also the first WWF game to feature actual FMV footage in the intro and wrestler's signature moves can be watched in the wrestler select screen. Howard Finkel's announcements and rant's between the wrestler's are featured before the match begins. The roster includes an impressive 20 wrestlers, a number that would not be surpassed until WWF attitude was released 6 years later: Randy Savage, Mr Perfect, Crush, Kamala, the Undertaker, Bret Hart, Tatanka, the Big Boss Man, Nasty Boy Knobbs, Nasty Boy Sags, Rick Martel, Shawn Michaels, Yokozuna, Bam Bam Bigelow, Ted Dibiase, Razor Ramon, Lex Luger, IRS, Headshrinker Fatu and Headshrinker Samu.
