This is my sweet kitty :) Turn volume up to hear purring. He is an adult, pet African serval. He is a neutered male who has all of his claws and teeth. He was born and raised as a pet, and I hold a licence from the USDA to do educational work with him.

An African Serval was limping along in the Arizona desert until she collapsed alongside a road. She had almost completely given up the will to live. She was probably a pet or perhaps used in the hybrid breeding scheme that has become all the rage where Servals are bred to domestic house cats to produce Savannah Cat hybrids. The domestic cats are often killed in the process. The kittens sell for thousands of dollars, but when they mature they typically spray and bite and make awful pets. The hybrids are usually discarded by the time they are two or three years old. Servals are unfortunately very popular in the exotic "pet" trade, we recently rescued Servie the Serval after her owner of ten years was hospitalized and unable to care for her any longer. People often buy wild species of cats has kittens and cubs not realizing the huge commitment they are taking on in terms of cost (these cats can live well over 20 years) the wild habits these cats have (including spraying EVERYWHERE) and of course the danger involved in owning these large cats. Then what happens to these cats when they are no longer wanted??? Patrick Kelleys enthusiasm and vision for establishing a new domestic breed based on the Serval / domestic Cat cross prompted him to research what steps would be needed to be recognized and accepted by an official feline registry. Armed with that information, obtained from Leslie Bowners at TICA (The International Cat Association), Patrick approached numerous breeders of Servals and encouraged them to attempt the development of this new breed. Initially, no breeders were interested. But Patrick persisted and finally convinced one breeder, Joyce Sroufe, to join him in founding the Savannah breed. In 1996, Patrick Kelley and Joyce Sroufe wrote the original version of the Savannah breed standard, and presented it to the TICA board.
