How-To Tuesday: Arduino 101 potentiometers and servos

Check out makershed.com for a complete line of Arduino products. This is the 3rd installment of my Aduino How-To Tuesdays. This week I am going to cover using another basic part, the potentiometer. I will also cover connecting a servo to the Arduino. Servos can be hard to control, but not with the Arduino! That's just another reason why I love this little micro-controller.

How to REVERSE a Servo.

Here is how I reverse my servos, when I need one, that cannot be reversed with the TX. It works on most servos, but with the smaller ones, I find it easier to "cut and splice" the wires to the potentiometer. Do not attempt this if you are not confident in your soldering abilities, as it is necessary no wire comes undone in flight. Thanks for watching. Dave

DIY USB-Controlled Servo Squirter Water Pump

In this video, we'll show you a simple project where we connect a hobby R/C servo to a small water pump, and control both from the USB NerdKit. Using input from the connected computer, you can aim, and fire a stream of water. The video also introduces topics like Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), including how hobby servos share a common protocol (1.0 to 2.0ms pulses), and how to use the ATmega168 to generate these pulses. Presentation of possibilities of my own design servo controller. Various independent speeds, 18-channels, 8-bit resolution (I'm planning to TRY increasing resolution to 10 bits). Possibility of setting a position to be reached in desired time. You can see it in the movie at 0:30 - 0:40 (each servo has different distance to go, but all of them are set to do this in the same time, so the move starts and ends at the same time). Controlled by Atmel ATmega8, 16MHz. PC communication via rs232.

3-Servo Walking Robot - The Latest in Hobby Robotics

How do you make a walking biped robot, with only 3 servos? In this episode of The Latest in Hobby Robotics, Frits Lyneborg from letsmakerobots.com shows you his inventive way of doing just that. The programs used the robot on the video can be downloaded here: letsmakerobots.com/node/29379 Tools needed are just very basics, like saw, drill, ruler etc. Materials are the 3 servos, some wood (4 paint sticks), hot glue, a couple of screws and some thread locking fluid. The servos are controlled by an AXE230, and batteries are used as balancing weight. You can use either 3 "normal" batteries, or 4 rechargeable, you just need somewhere between 4.5 and 5.5 volts. You can adjust the the height of the batteries, and there are several parameters to adjust in the programming code as well, to make your robot walk well. You can also port the simple code to any other micro controller of your choise, and add sensors, arms and more to your own robot. If you have never build a robot before, the best place to start is probably here: letsmakerobots.com/start

Make Electric Screw Drivers from R/C servos.

Using an Kraft KPS 15 servo, here I show how to make your own screwdriver for working with small, repetitious screws, Allens or bolts. Necessity is the mother of invention, so hence (because we had so many little screws to remove and replace) this was the cool way to do it. Many old servos can be found and used for this task at garage sales, etc. I use mine all the time and hope you may find this a useful project to try. I use Amazing Goop to glue my stuff, www.amazinggoop.com and because this is a tight fit with lack of air, let it dry at least 48 hours before using. Your servo may differ than mine, and you may elect to mount your screwdriver to the output arm, or servo wheel instead. That allows you to remove the driver and add a drill bit, slotted screw drive, or Allen wrench instead. I made mine permanent, because I dont lose anything since it is entirely self-contained. Most of the things I need to use it on is Phillips anyway. This fits in the palm of the hand rather well and you may find it a useful tool. Have fun, and thanks for watching. Dave

Double your servo power and have backups too. Heres how I do it.

* Please read* 3 servo failures in 2 weeks, caused me to take a look at how we failsafed them in the past. But originally, we doubled servos to double the power for big fast airplanes. Some companies today sell a complete set of linkages and mounts that can hook up to 3 servos at once! Triple power! Preflights and Micro throttle Backup servos could help. Got a Nitro plane with lots of money and time tied up in it? If it is too expensive to crash, you can always backup your servos along with other equipment. If your going to fly heavy Nitro planes, you may consider doing this, since you will have the room. I have done this for some of my 1/4 scale planes mostly back in the day when we were scared to fly and always worried about something quitting. So in my quest to show all the new folks more RC history and remind the old folks of the "Good ole Days", I hope you enjoy this. In a previous video you saw me demonstrate how to backup batteries and make Landing Batteries. So in continuing on with my "backup series", this video will demonstrate how I backup my servos with a simple linkage hookup and operation. If a servo does fail, it is easy to see and hear as it will be working harder plus the throw (due to springs) is reduced and you can see that. Remember "If it sounds stupid but it works, it ain't stupid!" Thanks for watching, subscribing, and all your continued support. Servo motor control with VSD-E

This video demonstrates point-to-point servo axis movements with Granite Devices VSD-E drives. The machine has two linear stages stacked (upper for higher precision). The lower stage (long travel) has a 150W BLDC servo motor and upper a 10W DC servo. This video shows some operation and jogging of machine from PC. All motion control (accel & decel ramps, velocity control, torque limiting, axis travel limiting) are done internally in VSD drives. PC sends only simple move commands to drives thru USB bus. HK Orange Receivers vs Spektrum AR-500- Range testing and servo failures.

See servo failures, UBEC testing, and HK Orange Receiver Range tests vs Spektrum AR-500 Receiver while Range testing with my Turkey Baster Can. Then see the full range testing in the car. Typical Range of the Spektrum DX6i Transmitter is approx 3000 feet and with that test it resulted with the following relative formula. 5 feet from the can equaled approx 480 feet 10 feet from the can equaled approx 793 feet 15 feet from the can equaled approx 1156 feet 20 feet from the can equaled approx 1780 feet All 3 of these HK orange park flyer receivers are flyable, based on these results. However, I do not have faith in the Hobby King Turnigy servos for this plane, so reverted to some good old (made in USA Kraft KPS 15 II Servos) The HK UBEC has been working flawlessly, however a 4.8 v receiver battery would be less likely to fail than this UBEC using a 7.4 LiPo. EZ-B Bluetooth Servo Tamiya Bulldozer Robot

This is a tutorial video on how to assemble and modify a Tamiya Bulldozer into a bluetooth servo controlled robot. The brains of the robot are a EZ-B Board available at www.ez-robot.com. The software is EZ-Builder, which is also available at www.ez-robot.com. The Tamiya Bulldozer Kit is a favourite amongst robot builders. There is only one problem with the kit... It is powered by DC gear driven motors, yuck! This little project I put together today demonstrates how to modify the kit to use modified servos in place of the DC motor set. The modified servos provide greater accuracy of speed control. They are also pretty strong without needing to move quickly. I used the EZ-B Board for the brains of the robot. The software is EZ-Builder.
