Top 10 Trad Kung Fu Fights; Prodigal Son No.2

Yuen Biao vs. Frankie Chan in the finale to the wonderful Wing Chun inspired film. Without a doubt Yuen Biao's best work as a leading man. The stunning choreography is the brainchild of Sammo Hung and his team. This is one of those films where I can't pick the best fight scene, so I just chose the final fight. I give it 5/5. Legend of the Wolf; Donnie Yen vs. Mak Wai Cheung

Choreographed by Donnie Yen. The best fight in the movie with cleverly used acrobatics, incredible kicking and some of the most frantic exciting choreography ever put to film. There is an interview of Mak Wai Cheung on my page, as well as the other fights from this movie.

Top 10 Trad Kung Fu Fights; Snake in the Eagle's Shadow No.8

Jackie Chan in his big break, the foreunner to Drunken Master, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow. Like Drunken Master it was directed in 1978 by Yuen Woo Ping and starred Jackie Chan, Yuen Siu Tien and Hwang Jang Lee (who knocked some of Jackie's front teeth out with a misplaced kick). Inventively choreographed, with some dazzling bootwork and enjoyable acrobatics, this fight does done in history as the first fight where the hero joins two styles together to defeat the villain. I give it 3.5/5. Please rate and comment. You can check out the rest of the Top 10 list on my page.

Top 10 Trad Kung Fu Fights; Drunken Tai Chi No.10

Donnie Yen's screen debut is not spectacular but shows some obvious talent. Directed by Yuen Woo Ping in 1984, this fight against Wong Tao shows Donnie's impressive acrobatic and weaponry abilities. Worthwhile just for Donnie's use of the Plum Flower Chain. I give it 3/5. Please rate and comment. You can check out the rest of the Top 10 list on my page.

Top 10 Trad Kung Fu Fights; The Odd Couple No.5

Described as the greatest weapons movie ever, we see Sammo Hung and Lau Kar Wing at the height of their physical powers. Lau Kar Wing directed this 1979 movie but a joint hand was shared in the choreography between both Lau's team and Sammo's team, and the film is superior for it. Rarely have the dao and qiang been shown so beautifully on screen. Another great selling point of this fight is the contrast between Sammo's Northern style and Lau's Southern style. Yuen Biao also doubles for Lau's more acrobatic movements, making it an absolute classic. I give it 4.5/5. Please rate and comment. You can check out the rest of the Top 10 list on my page.

Top 10 Trad Kung Fu Fights; Shaolin Temple No.6

The final fight to the awesome 1982 Shaolin Temple. This is Jet Li's first film and the first Chinese-produced kung fu film. It doesn't have the sophisticated choreography of its Hong Kong's counterparts, but these Wushu players look damn good. The only actor I know apart from Jet is Ji Chun Hua (in yellow and black) and Cheng-Hui Yu (the bearded guy) so please comment if you know any of the others. I give it 4/5. Please rate and comment. You can check out the rest of the Top 10 list on my page.

Top 10 Trad Kung Fu Fights; Shaolin Temple 2 Part 1 No.9

A great fight from some of the greatest wushu players of all time. This first part mainly shows of Cheng-Hui Yu's terrific Wudong sword (which is a good example of what Wuxia is like but without wires). Then Jet comes to help with his Shaolin pole. At the end of Part 1 Yu Hai and Ji Chun Hua pit it out. Like Shaoin Temple 1 this lacks the sophistication of its Hong Kong counterparts in terms of choreography and editing, but old-style wushu like this is so hard to come by that nobody really cares. I give it 4/5. Please rate and comment. You can check out the rest of the Top 10 list on my page.

Top 10 Trad Kung Fu Fights; Shaolin Temple 2 Part 2 No.9

The second part to the end fight of Jet's fantastic Shaolin Temple 2. It starts off with Yu Hai and Ji Chun Hua battling it out, but mainly it shows Jet using his three section staff (something he hadn't used since until Fearless) and his own hands to fight against the bandits. This fight is pure finesse, watching proper wushu experts like this is simply sublime, and more than makes up for the weaknesses in camerawork and choreography. I give it 4/5. Please rate and comment. You can check out the rest of the Top 10 list on my page.

Once Upon a Time in China; Fight 2- Umberella

Choreographed by Lau Kar Wing. Jet using Wong Fei Hung's trademark umberella. A nice, short, intricate fight scene. However, in filming the jump stunt at the end Jet broke his leg. After this fight scene Jet is doubled by Xin Xin Xiong for the more acrobatic fight scenes. If you didn't know Xin Xin Xiong played the evil acrobatic priest in OUATIC2 and Club Foot in OUATIC3.

Top 10 Trad Kung Fu Fights; Legend of a Fighter No.4

The end fight to the classic Yuen Woo Ping directed Legend of a Fighter. Here Leung Kar Yan (aka Beardy) plays Huo Yuan Jia fighting for Chinese honour against his old Japanese teacher, Chiang-Ho Shan (Yasuaki Kurata). Due to Yuen Woo Ping's traditional hardcore choreography, Leung Kar Yan's uncanny ability to mimic any martial art he is shown (he never had any formal teaching in martial arts) and Yasuaki Kurata's genuine ability (he is an expert in aikido, karate and judo) this fight has become a milestone in dramatic old-school fighting. I give it 4.5/5. Please rate and comment. You can check out the rest of the Top 10 list on my page.

He also taught Donnie how to use the qiang (spear) for his role in Hero. A very talented and underrated guy.

Top 10 Trad Kung Fu Fights; Ninja in the Dragon's Den No.7

The fast-paced and well chorepgraphed ninja fight from Corey Yuen's (former Peking Opera classmate of Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao) 1982 directorial debut Ninja in the Dragon's Den. One of the few times a Hong Kong Kung Fu film has shown Japanese arts as a thing of such grace. Hiroyuki Sanada (taught by the legendary Sonny Chiba) fights a member of his own stunt team in a dazzling display of Kendo and Ninjitsu. It is by far the best fight in the film, simply because it is so original in its appraoch and execution (and it doesn't feature the intolerable Conan Lee). Even Hwang Jang Lee's finale in the film doesn't reach this one's remarkable standards. I give it 4/5. Please rate and comment. You can check out the rest of the Top 10 list on my page.
