SHADIA MANSOUR "EL KOFEYYE 3ARABEYYE" 2010 PROMO

Shadia Mansour, First Lady of Arabic Hip Hop, is set to release the first single from her upcoming debut album entitled "El Kofeyye 3arabeyye" Lyrics written by Shadia Mansour, Music written by Sandhill, Produced by Johnny Juice. The song features M1 of Americas Underground Political Duo Dead Prez. M1 travelled to Gaza in 2009 with Existence Is Resistance (www.existenceisresistance.org) and also felt there was a dire need for a song representing what this scarf really meant to the Arabic nations Shadia explains the meaning behind the track The song represents the Arab scarf "Kofeyye". In this song, I am claiming back its historical, political and revolutionary purpose. As you are aware, the 'Kofeyye' has been tastelessly commercialized and economically exploited worldwide. I feel that it is only right to give the people a thorough introduction and understanding of its symbolic existence. The Video Press Release, which can be viewed on Youtube.com, was filmed whilst "El Kofeyye 3arabeyye" was being recorded, arranged, mixed and produced by Public Enemy's own DJ/Producer, Johnny Juice at Chuck D's Terrordome Studio, Strong Island. Special Thanks/Credits for this Video go to Nana Dankwa, www.colourtelly.tv For more information: Contact: shadiamanagement@gmail.com www.myspace.com

[Watch the official video at www.youtube.com The Kuffiyeh is Arabic "Good morning, cousins; y'all welcome, come in. What would you like us to serve you, Arab blood or tears from our eyes?" I think that's how they expected us to receive them. That's why they got embarrassed when they realized their mistake. That's why we rocked the kuffiyeh, the white and black. Now these dogs are startin' to wear it as a trend. No matter how they design it, no matter how they change its color, The kuffiyeh is Arabic, and it will stay Arabic. The gear we rock, they want it; our culture, they want it; Our dignity, they want it; everything that's ours, they want it; Half your country, half your home; why, why? No, I tell 'em. Stealin' something that ain't theirs, I can't allow it. They imitatin' us in what we wear, wear; this land is not enough for them. What else do you want? They're greedy for Jerusalem. Learn how to say "human beings". Before y'all ever rocked a kuffiyeh, we here to remind 'em who we are. And whether they like it or not, this is our clothing style. [Chorus:] That's why we rock the kuffiyeh, cuz it's patriotic. The kuffiyeh, the kuffiyeh is Arabic. That's why we rock the kuffiyeh, our essential identity. The kuffiyeh, the kuffiyeh is Arabic. Come on, throw up the kuffiyeh (throw that kuffiyeh up for me). The kuffiyeh, the kuffiyeh is Arabic. Throw it up! Come on, Greater Syria!. The kuffiyeh is Arabic, and it will stay Arabic. "Don't Fucking Touch My Keffiyeh" - Shadia Mansour

"You can take my falafel and hummus, but don't f***ing touch my keffiyeh," declares 26-year-old British-Palestinian MC Shadia Mansour from a New York stage as she introduces her song, "El Kofeyye 3arabeyye" (The Keffiyeh Is Arab), written when she discovered that an American company had created a blue-and-white version of the iconic Arab scarf with stars of David on it. Then she starts rhyming. Arabic words emerge like a burst of machine-gun fire. Mansour only became an MC by chance. But today she's regarded as one of the luminaries of the Arab hip-hop scene, a platform she has used to declare a musical intifada [uprising] against oppression -- be it the occupation of her people's land, the repression of women, or conservative opposition to her music. "I'm like the keffiyeh/However you rock me/Wherever you leave me/I stay true to my origins/Palestinian," she raps from the stage. In response, numerous red-and-white and black-and-white checked scarves appear above the crowd at Galapagos Art Space in Dumbo, Brooklyn, where Mansour is performing. This is the first concert on a fundraising tour for the organization Existence is Resistance, which organizes hip-hop tours in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Mansour is part of a crew of MCs from the Arab diaspora performing both their own songs and collaborations with each other. "This is how we wear the keffiyeh/The Arab keffiyeh," she sings. Her voice, so uncompromising and stern just a second ago, has switched to soft ...

Soraya Hassan bellydancer with Shadia and Shafik Galal

From the 1952 film Qalil El Bahkt starring Shadia, Kemal el Shenawy and Ismael Yaseen, featuring dancers Loula Abdo and Soraya Hassan. Shadia plays the role of a singer who works at a club and Kemal el Shenawy plays the part of her fiance. In this scene bellydancer Soraya Hassan dances onstage at the club with background dancers wearing melaya leffs. The male singer is a very young Shafik Galal, the well known (late) sha'abi singer who went on to appear in many egyptian movies including Khally Balak Min ZouZou. Shadia comes onstage in a melaya leff and sings with him. As she is in the middle of her performance she realizes that her conniving and sneaky cousin is sitting in the audience at a table flirting with her fiance. At one point the fiance and the cousin both get up and leave together at which Shadia is so upset that she is unable to continue singing and the stagehands have to quickly close the curtain. At the end of the clip Shadia's character is telling her good friend (played by Soraya Hassan) about what happened and her friend makes the observation that the underhanded cousin is asking for a good thrashing, and that Shadia must move the wedding date forward and get married as soon as possible.

Shadia Wood - Brower Youth Awards 2004

At age seven, Shadia attended a kids' conference on Superfund sites. There she learned about Love Canal, a nearby town that was synonymous with toxic waste. She also learned that New York's Superfund was going bankrupt. Shadia spent the next nine years trying to remedy that fact. She joined Kids Against Pollution at her elementary school and became a national spokesperson for the cause. Year after year, Shadia lobbied to restore Superfund, but every year, the legislation failed. Undaunted, Shadia looked for new ways to promote the issue. One year, she set up a lemonade stand outside the state Capitol and donated the profits to Superfund, capturing media attention. Finally, Governor George Pataki signed legislation to refinance the state's Superfund, as Shadia and her fellow lobbyists looked on. "This experience has taught me so much about how democracy works, how to stick with an issue until it's won even when you feel it's not going to happen, about organizing, about staying with the facts to bring the information to the public and elected officials," Shadia said.
