Shading: Part 1 - Styles of Shading Probably quite a dull video but hopefully for those who want any tips I hope this helps a little :) This video shows a number of very simple styles of shading, which can easily be achieved by using pretty much any type of pencil. Extra tips: I recommend using a 'softer' (darker) pencil as you can vary your range of tone alot better than using a hard light pencil. Also, darker pencils are more smudgable. If you want the lighting in your picture to be very precise, think about which way the light is hittting the objects in your drawings when it comes to shading. A very simple practice is to draw a number of balls and shading them differently to where you would like light to hit them. To shade lighter, it helps to hold the pencil further away from the tip, and slide your hand don the pencil the darker you get. Holding the pencil at an angle rather than straight vertically can help smoothen out the lines when you shade and make a less 'patchy' appearance. Any questions and comments are welcome. Thanks :)

That was a very confusing subject to speak about Lol. So here are the main points I was trying to make. 1. Whatever direction light is coming from, the opposite end will be darker 2. The closer the light source, the darker and longer the shadow. 3. Under normal and natural light, like sun light, an object keeps its shape and length, but under false lighting, distortion is common. 4. For more realism, objects aren't the only places where shadows fall, so you can shade the environment or surface that the object is on or around. I'm sorry if this video doesn't help you any... I'm not sure how else to explain this. I just do it.... If you're looking for some help then perhaps seek an actual art teacher as I am not. I've never taken art classes and don't know how else to explain what I do. If you can't gather the technique I use from the video or through the written lay out below then I'm sorry I cannot help you. Step 1: Materials - Get a decent piece of drawing paper and a pencil. Use whatever suits you. I personally just use mechanical pencils. Be sure to have a decent big eraser, a small eraser for details, a blending tool (in my case tissue paper rolled up), and something to wipe away the shavings. I use a make-up brush. Step 2: Sketch - Find a good reference. I generally use photos by Dominica Nawrot from DeviantArt. If you use any of her work, please ask her for permission and give her credit for her wonderful photos! - I will start by isolating the area I'd like to draw. In this case, it was a photo of a horse trotting but I only wanted the head and neck so I cropped it and placed it on my computer screen. I enlarged it to see some details. It will become slightly distorted so I will compensate the best I can. Once I have my reference set, I'll start sketching. - I have no standard technique for sketching. I am using my own brush preset; you can set up your brush by watching the Brush setup tutorial I posted earlier. The first thing I do is picking some colors, I start with the darkest color, then pick a medium tone and one brighter color for highlighting and a bright blue for the second light source (rim light) First I define the rough shape of a generic object (meat bean?) using the darkest color, I make a very rough and quick shading on the inside of the object and fill out the rest with the color 2. The blending of both colors is done by Pen pressure first and then to get smoother results I use the color picker (press ALT key while using the brush) and select the in-between color shades. At one point of the video I use a green brush to show the directions of my brush strokes, The strokes are slightly curved and always follow the shape flow. The brush stroke directions and color picking are the main 2 key points! Try to avoid soft airbrushes for shading. Those can be used in some styles or for correcting sometimes but in general shading with those brushes always looks mushy and artificial. As you can see in the video I did not create a perfectly smooth surface, it looks a bit bumpy and rough. With a little bit more time and effort it can be a lot nicer but the key is to have a bit texture and structure!
