Shaolin Monk Rain Demonstration
The Shaolin Monks of China perform a private demonstration for United Studios of Self Defense an American Martial Arts Organization. The demonstration took place at the Shaolin Temples in Henan China. The monks performed the demonstration even though it rained. The Shaolin temples (Shàolín Sì) are a group of Chinese Buddhist monasteries famed for their long association with Chán (Japanese Zen) Buddhism and martial arts. They are perhaps the Buddhist monasteries most familiar in the West. The name "Shaolin" means "Young Forest". Shaolin is situated on China's central Taoist sacred mountain, Songshan in Henan province. It was founded during the Northern Wei dynasty in approximately 497 AD and remains one of China's oldest Buddhist temples. It was said to have been used as a home by the Indian monk Batuo during the thirty years he spent preaching Nikaya Buddhism in China. Probably the most famous name associated with Shaolin is that of Bodhidharma or Tamo (pinyin: Dámó), an Indian monk who travelled to China in 5th century to teach Buddhism. A traditional story relates that Bodhidharma sat in meditation facing a wall in a nearby cave for nine years. Bodhidharma's ministry at Shaolin formed the basis for what would later be called the Zen or, in China, Chán (both terms means Meditation) school of Buddhism. After entering Shaolin, it is said that Bodhidharma found the monks out of shape from a lifetime spent only in study and scholasticism, so he introduced a regimen of <b>...</b>

Shaolin Monk Demonstrates Kung Fu Squatting Stance (Pu Bu)
The stretching the master demonstrates for this stance accompanies flexibility for horse stance well. In China the people squat very often - on the side of the road, toilet, cleaning, etc. You don't see so much of this in the West, and as a result, hip flexibility and leg alignment are often poor, leading to weak stances and frequent accidents when force is applied to the ankle knee, and hip joints, and is not carried through the bones correctly. Notice how flexible the master's ankle on the outstretched leg is, when he's deep in the stance. A good way to check on the general health of your ankles is to stand with your legs a shoulder-width apart, with no shoes on, and look at how your lower leg bones connect with the foot. If you can see the bone going off to the side of the foot (normally to the instep of the foot in most people), then you will need to do some work on your general joint alignments. Walking on the edges of the feet is a good place to start; to get the ankles re-adjusting. Ma Bu (horse riding stance) I have been told (by a very experienced and martially competent taichi/bagua/hsing-I teacher) is the best for sorting the general leg alignments out; especially the hips. Notice how the master's feet are not parallel. His back is also straight while his students' are not. It seems that his hips are a lot more integrated with his thighs too - the base of his spine relatively straight and rooted within the middle of the pelvis when viewed from the side. The knees are above the feet, while the thighs are parallel to the ground. The evidence of his prolonged practice is obvious, especially when you compare him to the students.

Robert Tai director/actor (Shaolin Monk) trains Lo Rei actor(young Japanese Monk) in Dragon, Tiger, Crane, Snake, Leopard, and Monkey Shaolin. 6 different fist styles. Taken from movie footage originally for Shaolin vs Ninja 1985 but was re-released in the west in Shaolin dolemite later. Robert Tai Chi Hsien is a well known martial arts director, actor, and stunts coordinator since the early 70's to today. Robert Tai is originally from Taiwan and has worked with many stars from there and Hong Kong especially working with Chang Cheh shooting the "5 Deadly Venoms" among others. Alexander Lo originally from Taiwan won the 1978 Tae Kwan do championship in Taiwan, and got into the movie business after his older brother Tong Lung introduced him to director Robert Tai, with whom he most frequently collaborated. Alexander worked on many films about Ninjas, such as Ren zhe da jue dou (1984), The Super Ninja (1984), Shao Lin yu ren zhe (1983), Ninjas, Condors 13 (1987), and Hong men jue e zhe (1984). He also worked on Shaolin films such as Shao Lin tong zi gong (1981) and the famous Shaolin dou La Ma (1983). In 1984, Tai directed Lou in a nine-hour epic titled Ren zhe da (1986), and some time after this epic film, Alexander quit acting but did not stop making movies. He continued with Robert Tai as an action choreographer, working on such films as Fist of Legend 2: Iron Bodyguards (1996). My favorite fight scene from classic kung-fu movie Shaolin Vs Lama. This scene really encapsulates true gung-fu using grappling, wrestling, punching kicking, some effective acrobatics, non classical striking, internal power, Iron body, locking, throwing, vital point and more. Even though the bad guy (Yao Fae Lin) has full high level Iron body, which means even baseball bats, Iron bars and even the first guns with rounded bullets would not penetrate him.. the monks discipline punches and power is so great that he is still able to hurt him pretty seriously. This is true Master level power that so few left have achieved today. Some of my instructors and high level brothers had this kind of killing power, even against someone with Iron body. Almost supernatural strength born from years of disciplined training and practice so few today are willing to work for to attain. Fantastic stuff!
