Hertz corporation ordered 1001 of the GT 350s to offer as rentals. The side stripes read "GT 350H", but the cars became know as "Rent-a-Racers." Some cunning Mustang owners would rent the Shelbys, swap the motor with the motor in their Mustangs, and return them to Hertz. At $17 per day and 17 cents per mile, it was a good bargain for a Shelby engine. It was "uncool" to own a former rental car, so many of the cars were debadged after they were decommissioned. Thanks to the Shelby American Automobile Association, however, many of these cars have been found. More than 800 were made in black, and the other 200 or so were divided between red, green, blue, and white. Only the black models and a few white ones had stripes on the hood, but many owners added them to the other cars during restoration.

In 1982 a 1965 Shelby GT-350 Mustang owned by a young Marine stationed at Cherry Point, North Carolina was stolen. The Marine soon deployed and never saw that car again—until 2007 when an NICB agent contacted him with news that his Mustang was located in Maryland. In the intervening years since it was stolen, the Mustang's true identity—its vehicle identification number (VIN)—had been professionally altered and matched with a fraudulent title. It was then sold to an unsuspecting buyer who eventually put a new $12000 Shelby engine in it. The duped owner was contacted in 2007 by the Maryland State Police and an NICB special agent asking to inspect his Shelby. As you can imagine, he was absolutely dazed when they informed him that his prized possession was, in fact, stolen property. That young Marine from 1982—now a professional airline pilot—was overjoyed when he was notified that his dream car had been recovered and was in excellent condition. And in a classy gesture of goodwill—he was not legally required to do so—the pilot gave the former owner a check for $12000 for the engine.

Imagine yourself flying through hairpin turns, shifting gears and working your way to the front, between a Camaro and Trans Am! White knuckle grip on the wheel as you work through the gears! SCCA Racing at its best is what inspired this 1965 Mustang Shelby R Tribute! Everything on this car is built with Trans Am racing history and Carroll Shelby's 1965 GT 350 in mind. This car takes it a step further with about fifty more horsepower. The engine is a 306 (302 bored .030 over) Mexican Block with 9.6 to 1 compression which runs on mid grade gasoline. Engine upgrades include a FRPP Z-303 hydraulic roller cam and tie bar hydraulic roller lifters. Edelbrock Performer RPM cylinder heads upgraded with screw in rocker studs, guide plates, .550 lift hydraulic roller springs, and Comp Cams roller rockers. The original S7MS Shelby intake, which has been ported to match the heads, is topped off with a LeMans Holley Carburetor pushing 600 CFM. The transmission is a 4 speed manual, 2.78 Top Loader known as the wide ratio, with a Hurst Competition Plus shifter with a Ford shift handle. The differential housing is an original 1965 Mustang K Code with a 3.50 ratio and a Detroit Locker rear end. The front suspension has been lowered 1" to lower the center of gravity and help in the turns. At the 1965 New York International Auto Show I met Carroll Shelby. He had a small space where he was displaying the new GT 350, The Sunbeam Tiger, and a GT40. I was 14 and very independent. I knew of Carroll Shelby from my father and I introduced myself to him at the show. He said he remembered my father well and was wondering If I was going to follow dads footsteps in racing. In spite of the demands on him he took his time giving me a personal tour of the three cars he was involved in. As I was leaving He gave me a poster of the GT350 that was a reprint of the April 1965 add that ran in Competition Press and Autoweek. I still have the poster, and even though I have known Carroll and worked for him and had him as a neighbor in Lake Tahoe, I never asked him to sign the poster. In my mind it is a cultural thing and I have had it since before he became a major celebrity and my children will inherit it just as I have enjoyed it all these years. Shelby American, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. today introduced the limited edition 2012 Shelby GT350 during the Chicago Auto Show, being held at the McCormick Place complex. A convertible, the first since 1970, and two new body colors (red and blue) will be options for the 2012 model year. In addition, a limited production of 350 total 2012 Shelby GT350s will be built. "Last year, we brought back the GT350 45 years after it was launched," said Carroll Shelby, founder of Shelby American. "They look and sound just like the ones we built in 1965. We're repeating history by offering two additional colors and building a few convertibles for the second year of production." Shelby American built 562 total GT350 fastback coupes in 1965; all were painted white with blue stripes. In 1966, Shelby added more color options for the hardtops. Four convertibles were also built; today they are among the most collectible Shelbys in the world. "Delays in the delivery of the new five liter Mustang last year resulted in fewer 45th Anniversary GT350 coupes than expected in the 2011 model year," added John Luft, president of Shelby American. "For the 2012 model year, we brought back the first GT350 convertible since 1970 and ramped up production to meet the expected demand.
