Sheng (Chinese mouth organ)
Sheng is one of the oldest Chinese musical instruments. The instrument existed as far back as 3000 years ago. By virtue of its construction, this is the only unique Chinese musical instrument in the Chinese orchestra capable of playing up to six notes simultaneously. It is therefore commonly called as the "Chinese mouth organ" by western people. Sheng consists of 13-17 bamboo pipes with different lengths that are mounted together onto a base. Each bamboo pipe has a free reed made of brass. Music is produced by blowing and sucking the air through a metal tube connected to the base. From the base the air then rushes through the other pipes. A player determines the notes to play by allowing the air to rush through selected pipes while pressing on selected keys near the base. By covering two or more holes on various pipes, chords can be played. Its warm mellow sound expresses lyrical melodies well, while its ability to play chords makes it a highly prized accompaniment instrument.

this instrument is called a sheng, a traditional chinese instrument. it consists of 21 reed pipes and a metal base. played by forcing air into the mouthpiece and covering holes on the pipes. there are multiple different types of sheng. traditional, the one im playing, key, alto and base. i play the key sheng too. ive played this instrument for about 7 years, and i learned to play it at FYCO, or firebird youth chinese orchestra, an orginization that teaches people to play instruments like this. to find out more, go to www.fyco.org.

Invincible Shaolin
Here's my second kung fu movie upload, the Chang Cheh directed "Venom Mob" classic, "Invincible Shaolin", released here to the US as "The Unbeatable Dragon." This is my personal favorite of all of the "Venoms" films, due to the amount and quality of the fight choreography, as well as the Shaw's penchant for outstanding period costumes and sets. The plot has more holes in it than Swiss cheese, but who cares? You get the whole "heroic brotherhood" thing going on, along with the exceptional kung fu, acrobatics courtesy of Chiang Sheng and Kuo Chui, and Sun Chien's tae kwon do kicks. (As a side note, Kuo Chui would go on to choreograph both "The Brotherhood of The Wolf" and that James Bond flick with Michelle Yeoh, who's title escapes me at the moment.) Like the previously uploaded "Bruce Lee The Man The Myth", I first saw "Invincible Shaolin" (under that "The Unbeatable Dragon" title) here on the Bay Area's KTVU Channel 2, back in 1982 when I was just a tyke of 12 years old. So there's also a lot of nostalgia involved here in this upload. Hopefully, if you grew up back then too, you'll have some fond childhood memories of these "Black Belt Theater" flicks as well.
