In this short film, you can see some of the best aikidoka from Cluj, Romania, under the tuition of Shihan Koichii Fujii Sensei (rokudan Aikikai) who was a guest in Cluj this summer. I think many beginners can learn a lot from the way you have to do Shiko correctly. The music is my beloved composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.

how to run a sumo practice, warm ups and drills focusing on shiko. shiko are very important in sumo, they are the base for all your power and strength. shikos are done everyday for hundreds of reps in japan. they generate strength and flexiblity and are an excellent warm up.
Shiko Mawatu makes "ROSA" look so easy
Here's a well-lit clip of Shiko playing Rosa - gorgeous...you can hear rhythm in the background from THE Lokassa ya Mbongo -- and that is Lokassa giving instructions to Shiko at the end, and Shiko making sounds of agreement... This little clip has gotten a lot of attention because it reveals 'close-up' the very relaxed two-fingered style of plucking that was used by Franco. Shiko Mawatu has been active as a Congolese guitarist since the time of Dr. Nico (with whom Shiko toured) and through the entire age of Franco. Shiko is one of today's leadiing exponents of Franco-style playing. Shiko also utilizes an unusual tuning from time to time -- different from Lokassa's 'mi-solo' tuning, and according to Lokassa that special tuning that Shiko uses is fast vanishing. I have to talk to Shiko and find out more about that special tuning. Lokassa says that Shiko may be the only person left who still plays using that unusual tuning. When I find out more about that I'll post it here.

Dancers go nuts in the sebeney!...Malage, Shiko, Nono...
Here's the tail end of a quarter-hour extravaganza by Malage de Lugendo, Shiko Mawatu, and the Soukous Stars...Malage has been singing Mario for 8-minutes or so when they shift into the sebèné (I write it "sebeney" in English -- the dance portion toward the end of most Congolese rumbas) - and I turn the camera's attention to the dance floor. Notice how fans make their feelings known: They climb right onstage and put MONEY in the pockets of the musicians (or try to stick it to the sweat on their faces! Be sure you do this the next time you are at a Congolese music performance: It's normal and welcome. Please use LARGE bills, such as $20, $50, and $100. You can stay on stage and dance for a while if you want to, no one will mind!
