Salamander 2 (1996 Konami) This is me playing through the sequel to the 1986 Konami SHMUP Salamander (AKA Life Force in the USA). This game continues the theme of mostly bio-themed stages. Also, there is no Gradius power-up bar here. All powerups are represented by icons, and activate upon pickup. A new feature is the homing Option attack. It consumes your regular Options, reducing them to Option Seeds. Two Option Seeds are needed to form one regular Option. Fans of Super Mario Fusion will recognize the Level 1 boss as the infamous Leviathan.

UMS review number 4! I decided to stick with the arcade theme again as they are classics. Big Blue is a classic top down view flying shooter game. I'm sure there is a word for them but I always forget. It has the exact same feel as all those games we played growing up as a kid. Map Name: Big Blue Map Download: www.sc2mapster.com Husky Rating: 6/10 Reason: I want to be honest about why I gave it a 6. It all comes down to content, enjoyment, replay value, and completion. I'll talk about that below. Pros: This game feels JUST like ones you'll play in the arcade. Very easy to understand and the controls are great. The map as a whole has TONS of potential and I cant wait to see it fully develop. VERY strong foundation for a super epic map! Read the cons carefully! Cons: There just isnt much content atm. The first 3 bosses are Overlords/Overseers and the first 10 minutes of mobs are one of two skins. There is only one type of weapon. Only 3 ships. BUT, all of this stuff is a work in progress. This game would easily reach an 8 had I reviewed it a month from now. I am super excited about this map I just simply have to rate it for its current state.

Here is my very first fangame. It is made in 1999 in Klik 'n Play, later ported to Multimedia Fusion to take advantage of advanced features. Get the game at: www.sendspace.com It is a Gradius-style shmup that has a prominent dimension-hopping element. That element has been a staple in my fangames since, from Xeno Fighters EX all the way to Super Mario Fusion. Since it is my first fan game, it does have its flaws. For example, the weapons system is very unpolished and confusing. One weapon is completely useless (it was more of Klik 'n Play's fault, since I had almost no control over variables). This video showcases the final mission, which is a trip to Microsoft Land, a hellish reality of the Microsoft environment from the mid-90's! General Protection Faults! EMM386 Exception errors! I finally unlocked all the upgrades for the Gummi Ships. I was able to build a very souped up Raiden mk-II as a Gummi to take on this beast of a Gummi mission: Assault on the Dreadnought, Mission 3. Most people I see play this mission take the easy way out and build a "Donut Ship" so that all of the aimed bullets pass right through the hole. I did not want to resort to using a Donut Ship, so I gave the Raiden mk-II Auto-Regen to regain health. I built a Teeny Ship with a Large Shell shield to block those lasers; I can avoid the normal shots by doing barrel rolls. Mission 3 of this Gummi stage has a very hard boss called Hunter-X. It behaves very similar to a Mushihimesama boss, with billions of bullets being showered at you. Standard SHMUP strategies apply here: Lead the bullet streams slowly so that they can be dodged. Getting hit is almost unavoidable in this hard mission, unless you use a Donut Ship... I can't help but think Star Wars when I play this level. It's got an Imperial Star Destroyer/Death Star hybrid, fleets of space warship, and even the music has that "space opera" feel of John Williams' Star Wars score. It has the strafing run on the surface of the dreadnought, the run inside the corridors, the assault on the core, and even a planet-busting weapon like the Death Star. It took me 3 hours to learn Remilia's attacks and counteract them using Styx. I had to strategically select which weapons to use during different points in the fight. Enter Remilia Scarlet by Kuri. Here is my list of the top ten greatest vertical shooter games for MAME. I am aware of the fact that some games are not included on here, for example great games such as Shikigami No Shiro, Ray Storm, Soukyugurentai etc.. the reason is because at this time the emulation on MAME is not perfect for these games and they still have minor performance issues. The games I have chosen for this list are ones that run pretty much arcade-perfect. So in other words this is basically my top ten list of 'shoot em ups for MAME that scroll vertically, and run flawlessly' :) What do you think? What's your personal top 10? Please leave a comment.
