Daegu, september the 2nd 2011. Final of the shot put men of the 2011 world championships in Daegu. Wonderful victory for David storl with 21.78m at his last attempt, and who is still 21; he is also the current world junior record holder. His PB before the championships was 21.05m. SHOT PUT Men World Youth Champs Lille 2011
There were 2 competitions in one : Jacko GILL against himself and the World youth record with 3 throws over his previous record and a best of 24,35m , and 4m back the fight for the 2nd and 3rd places between USA and POLAND , finally won by the 2 American SCHULTZ 20,35m and DAYS 20,14m from OCYPA 20,08m and REGIN 19,88m, all with Pbs. It is not because Jacko GILL is out of norms that one can say that the other competitors were not good (we had top 8 over 19,60m !) and some of them will probably become good senior shot putters with time and the appropriate work. It was good to see the whole main stand watching and cheering for shot put which proved to be a spectacular event ! But who the hell was the IAAF "official" who said "NO !" when the chief judge of the shot put has been asking for lines to be put at 21 and 23m before the start of the competition , saying that 17 and 19m were enough (!?!) ? ...It could certainly have helped the spectators and the medias ! Just another of some stupid decisions which spoiled these championships...DP

Shotput and Discus Drills with Coach Shelton Harrison of Higher Power AC
Coach Shelton Harrison, shows a few basic and advanced shotput and discus drills. Coach Harrison has 15 years of coaching experience. His most notable athlete was Kamorean Hayes. Hayes dominated the shotput for four years, without a loss in highschool. Harrison also coached Aslynn Halvorson, who has the NC all-time Discus record of 169-5. Halvorson is also featured in this video.

World junior shot put champion Jacko GILL has made history again in the shot put . After being the youngest ever world junior champion at age 15 and 7 months and 20,76m with 6kg , then throwing a world youth record with the 5kg at 23,86m 5 months later. He is now 9 months only after his world title , the 1st 16 and 17 years old to throw the senior 7kg implement officially over 20m . With 19,98m and 20,01m at 16y and 4 months and a body weight of only 96kg he is probably now the most incredible young thrower the world has ever seen with a technique and training based on speed and reactive strength. Jacko has also achieved the Daegu World senior champs B qualification ... but so far cannot compete there because he is ... too young ! If he would be a sprinter or a jumper , he would be eligible , but throwers are not for some mysterious and stupid reasons (????) Hopefully the NZ federation will ask the IAAF for a possible exemption . The world championship should be open to the best athletes whatever their age . Anyways Jacko is already looking toward London 2012 and who knows what can happen with 16 more months to go !!!

A unique document by Didier POPPE and this will be probably one of the most interesting videos of this web site for coaches and athletes interested by the rotational shot put and who want to know why the young Jacko GILL is so good . Of course he does not have a perfect technique (who has ?) and his start and torque could be improved (He is working on it) , BUT, his technique is very well suited to his athletics specificity and the expert eyes will soon pick the datas which make the difference during the building momentum , transfer and delivery phases with a minimal suspension time , super fast right left landings , and acceleration in the throwing path. Of course , the video document quality and Dartfish software used for this analysis are not perfect and subject to some error margin , but it does not change anything on the conclusions one can draw out of this document and the specificity of this incredible thrower who is destroying not only world records but also many commonly accepted "clichés" that people have on the shot put high performance approach.

Jacko GILL had made of the NEW ZEALAND school champs in Hastings 11 february a rendez vous to try to break the World Youth 5kg shot put record (23,23m) achieved by Polish Krystof BORZOZOWSKY at the youth Olympic Singapore last august where Jacko , ill , had to satisfy with the 2nd place and wanted a revenge. After 6 throws of the best ever shot put serie ever seen in the world , Jacko got his goal by breaking 3 times the world youth record with 23,26m , then 23,57m and finally 23,86m . A huge performance as Jacko has not even yet turned 16 and will be still throwing this implement next year , maybe for even more incredible distances !!! (note ; His last attempt slightly out of sector was over 24m !)

Warsaw, september the 20th 2011. Very special shot put contest in which every thrower had 2 attempts with 4 different shots: 8kg, 7.26kg, 6kg and 5kg. The best result for each weight are added to give an overall result. Dylan Armstrong won the contest with with 88.67m, Majewski was second with 88.64m, Cantwell 3rd with 87.24m.

The Canadian Dylan ARMSTRONG confirmed his favorite status by clearly winning this final with a 21,02m throw in front of Dorian SCOTT 20,19m and the young Australian Dale STEVENSON who equalled his PB with 19,99m. All throwers in the final were using the rotational technique.

Not really what could be expected from a World Youth Championship. Poor techniques , poor performances out of 2 or 3 athletes. The Chinese winner Tiangian GUO (15,24m) was obviously the best prepared athlete . One can really blame the stupid choice of IAAF who decided to make the women Youth throw the same implements as senior women (the boys were obviously better treated with implement weights more suited to their age) when they created this Youth championship. I cannot see any acceptable reason for this . The result has been catastrophic for a generation of female throwers where young shot putters were selected for their strength (mostly with heavy body weight ) and not for their athletic qualities . No everybody can have Valerie ADAMS morphology and deal with heavy implements at 15y of age . By luck , in 2012 , the IAAF will change this non sense and go back to the light implement for Youth women (3kg , I would rather have seen 3,25kg) . At least we shall have a chance to see some better women shot putting in the future !!!
