Ayn Rand and the Prophecy of Atlas Shrugged

Set in what Novelist and Philosopher Ayn Rand called 'the day after tomorrow,' Atlas Shrugged depicts an America in crisis, brought to her knees by a corrupt establishment of government regulators and businessmen with political pull - the 'looters' and the 'moochers' - who prey on individual achievement. Ayn Rand and the Prophecy of Atlas Shrugged looks into Rand's background for the ideas and philosophy that inspired and shaped her novel and seeks to determine whether America is indeed headed for the disastrous outcome she predicted.

Ayn Rand & the Prophecy of Atlas Shrugged - Documentary Movie Trailer

SPECIAL SCREENING EVENT JANUARY 17! Get tickets at atlasshrugged-thedoc.com Ayn Rand & the Prophecy of Atlas Shrugged is a feature length documentary film that examines the resurging interest in Ayn Rand's epic and controversial 1957 novel and the validity of its dire prediction for America. Set in what novelist and philosopher Rand called 'the day after tomorrow,' Atlas depicts an America in crisis, brought to her knees by a corrupt establishment of government regulators and businessmen with political pull. Despite critical scorn and continued derision from intellectuals on all sides of the ideological spectrum Atlas has remained a popular favorite and today sells more copies than it ever did. Why? Because - as evidenced by pointed and frequent references to Rand and Atlas Shrugged in the media -- an increasing number of Americans -- right or wrong -- see their society devolving into a nightmare scenario like the one Rand projected over a half century ago. Ayn Rand and the Prophecy of Atlas Shrugged looks into Rand's background for the ideas and philosophy that inspired and shaped her novel and seeks to determine whether America is indeed headed for the disastrous outcome she predicted.

Atlas Shrugged: From Fiction to Fact in 52 Years

You really, really, really should read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. "...If only "Atlas" were required reading for every member of Congress and political appointee in the Obama administration. I'm confident that we'd get out of the current financial mess a lot faster..." "...For the uninitiated, the moral of the story is simply this: Politicians invariably respond to crises -- that in most cases they themselves created -- by spawning new government programs, laws and regulations. These, in turn, generate more havoc and poverty, which inspires the politicians to create more programs . . . and the downward spiral repeats itself until the productive sectors of the economy collapse under the collective weight of taxes and other burdens imposed in the name of fairness, equality and do-goodism..." Atlas Shrugged - The "Money" Speech

Speech begins at 2:02 An excerpt from Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, known as character Francisco D'Anconia's "Money" speech. The rich "playboy" shows up uninvited at James Taggart's wedding reception, overhears someone say that money is the root of all evil, at which he launches into a speech that is considered to be one of the hardest-hitting philosophical passages in the book. He talks about the nature of money ad wealth- how it is created, what it is, and what conditions must exist if wealth is to remain in the hands of the owner. Today is 04/13/11. Atlas Shurgged, The Movie (Part One) comes out this Friday. Atlas Shrugged: Part II Greenlighted, In Theaters Next Fall

"It's a poetic moment that today [February 2, 2012] Ayn Rand was born 107 years ago and we are greenlighting Atlas Shrugged: Part II," announced producer John Aglialoro at Reason Weekend 2012, which was held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Aglialoro was joined by his partner Harmon Kaslow in making the announcement. Filming is set to begin in April and the movie will hit theaters this fall, before Election Day. "In October," said Kaslow, "hopefully we'll have people from Reason, from FreedomWorks, people who believe in what this book represents, [standing] in front of the...theater to tell people not only how important the movie is but what they're going to do in November and hopefully effectuate some positive changes." www.atlassociety.org Atlas Shrugged Characters Dagny Taggart At Odds With James Taggart Hello, I'm David Kelley, Executive director of The ATLAS SOCIETY and consultant to the ATLAS SHRUGGED movie. The scene we are going to watch, adapted from Chapter 1 in the novel, is a confrontation among three people James Taggart, president of Taggart Transcontinental, the largest rail line in the United States, created generations ago by Nat Taggart. There has been a crash on the Rio Norte Line, a 300 mile spur line serving Colorado, one of the few areas in the country that are flourishing economically. James's Taggart sister Dagny Taggart is VP of Operations. She needs to deal with the crash by rebuilding the Rio Norte Line, which has not been upgraded for a long time. Her assistant Eddie Willers first confronts James Taggart with the necessity of doing something. Then Dagny Taggart arrives and the conflict moves into high gear. Let's watch... [Play scene: Start at beginning, end with Dagny Taggart "Just know that this is the consequence of your policies..." This scene presents a dramatic contrast between two different mindsets, two ways of functioning in the world. What is Eddie's Willers concern? His concern is the crash—it happened, it's a fact, and it has to be dealt with. Eddie is a highly placed and competent assistant to Dagny Taggart. Behind the Scenes of Atlas Shrugged the Movie

Reason.tv presents exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage of the movie adaption of part I of Ayn Rand's epic and hugely influential novel, Atlas Shrugged, which tells the story of a United States crumbling under the weight of government intervention and the "men of the mind" who fight against their collectivist exploiters. This sneak peek offers a glimpse into the post-production process as well as portions of a never-before-viewed scene from the movie. ***SPOILER ALERT*** This video contains portions of a scene and actors discussing the actions of their characters. This pivotal scene features James Taggart (played by Matthew Marsden, Black Hawk Down, Transformers), the weak-willed, conniving brother of the film's heroine, Dagny Taggart, as he conspires with the likes of corrupt lobbyist Wesley Mouch (Michael Lerner, A Serious Man, Barton Fink), shady businessmen Orren Boyle (Jon Polito, Miller's Crossing), and Paul Larkin (Patrick Fishler, Lost, Southland), to bring down the successful steel magnate Hank Rearden. They view Rearden's supposed threat of monopoly over the steel and railroad industries as on obstacle in the path to success for wealthy playboy Francisco D'Aconia, with whom they're investing their money, though James Taggart is suspicious (perhaps rightly so) of D'Aconia's trustworthiness and business acumen. Atlas Shrugged Part 1 hits theaters April 15. Produced by Hawk Jensen and Ted Balaker. Camera by Alex Manning and Jensen, who also edited. Special thanks ...

Atlas Shrugged's Makers Speak! Q&A w producers & actor

Released April 15, 2011, Atlas Shrugged Part I has been predictably panned by reviewers and wildly embraced by audiences. At the movie-review site Rotten Tomatoes, just 8 percent of critics give a thumbs up, compared to 85 percent of moviegoers. Such a sharply split reaction mirrors the reception of Ayn Rand's original and controversial novel too. Appearing in 300 theaters, the movie's weekend take on a per-screen basis was a strong $5640, good enough for third overall behind major-studio releases Rio and Scream 4. How do the folks behind Atlas Shrugged Part I feel about it all? On April 16, at Reason Foundation's annual Reason Weekend, Nick Gillespie interviewed producers John Aglialoro, Harmon Kaslow, and Mike Marvin, and actor Matthew Marsden (he plays James Taggart) live in front of about 100 people. They talked freely about the challenges of making the film on a tight budget and an even tighter deadline; how Rand's politics play in Hollywood (spoiler alert: poorly!); where the inspiration for the film came from; how the train and other memorable scenes were shot; and whether there's any truth to the rumors that Atlas Shrugged Part III will be a musical... And then they answer audience questions, including when to expect Parts II & III... Go to reason.tv for downloadable versions, other videos, and supporting links to this video. About 40 minutes. Atlas Shrugged Movie Explained Part 2-- Rearden Metal Is Not For Sale.flv

www.atlasshrugged.org Atlas Shrugged Character Hank Rearden Won't Sell Rearden Metal Hello, I'm David Kelley, Executive director of The ATLAS SOCIETY and consultant to the ATLAS SHRUGGED movie. In the scene we are going to watch, drawn from Chapter 7 in the novel, a Dr. Potter from the State Science Institute visits Hank Rearden's office to discuss Rearden Metal. The State Science Institute is a government institution, ostensibly for scientific research. But as the scene illustrates, it is also a political organ with a political agenda. Let's watch... In this scene we have what appears to be a simple conflict between a businessman and a bureaucrat. Dr. Potter wants to buy the rights to Rearden Metal, and Hank Rearden refuses. But let's examine where each of these men are coming from. For Dr. Potter, the economy as a whole is a system that needs to be directed by government. When Hank Rearden asks Dr. Potter to say whether the metal is good, Dr. Potter says "if it isn't good, then it is a physical danger...." All right, that's clear enough. No one, including Hank Rearden himself, wants to introduce a technology that harms people. "If it is good, it is a social danger." What does that mean? Dr. Potter is invoking the idea of anti-trust. If a business gets too big, it's an economic danger to smaller competitors and has to be limited by the force of the state. Adapting the Epic: The Making of Atlas Shrugged the Movie

"The whole theme of the movie is, really, human evil," says Brian O'Toole, the screenwriter behind Atlas Shrugged Part I, the feature adaptation of Ayn Rand's influential novel. "And human evil springs from good intentions." O'Toole and producer Harmon Kaslow tell Reason.tv what viewers can expect to see in the movie, which covers the first of three sections in Rand's novel. "This movie really comes across as a very empowering movie for women," says Kaslow. "It's about a woman who takes on a lot of forces working against her." The movie is set in a dystopian near-future, and the story follows Dagny Taggart, a railroad executive who faces a crisis when one of her trains is derailed. While Dagny tries to improve the railway by collaborating with Hank Rearden, an entrepreneur who's developed a new kind of metal, her brother James Taggart conspires with government officials and crony capitalists who are bent on taking Rearden down. "To me, this was the underdog story," says O'Toole. Atlas Shrugged Part 1 hits theaters April 15. Produced by Hawk Jensen and Ted Balaker. Camera by Zach Weissmueller and Jensen, who also edited.
