"Walled In!" Germany's inner border

more: www.dw-world.de For 28 years, a nearly insurmountable barrier kept people from fleeing East Germany. But then, the dramatic night of November 9, 1989, saw the fall of the Wall that divided Germany. Today, it is difficult to imagine what was bitter reality just a few decades ago. For the first time, a realistic computer animation reveals the vast security system of Germany's inner border and the Berlin Wall, both of which were recreated virtually in the greatest detail. The animation is part of the DVD "Walled in! What the Cold War frontier in divided Germany was really like" which can be purchased at DW's online store store.dw-world.de.

Maratac Compact Signal Mirror

This is a review of the CountyComm.com Compact Signal Mirror. The signal mirror is perhaps one of the finest, daytime, active signaling devices known to man. County Comm's new, compact, laminated, polycarbonate signal mirror takes this ancient communication device to a new level of lightweight performance and durability. It's great for visual communication, emergency signaling for rescue and makes a great daytime "flashlight" for looking into caves, stumps and critter holes which is what I'll mainly be using it for.

The Man Behind The Traffic Signal

It was Morgan's experience while driving along the streets of Cleveland that led to his invention of a traffic signal device. The first American-made automobiles were introduced to US consumers not long after the turn of the century. It was not uncommon for bicycles, animal-powered wagons and new gasoline-powered motor vehicles to share the same streets and roadways with pedestrians. According to tradition, it was after witnessing a collision between an automobile and a horse-drawn carriage that Morgan became convinced that something should be done to improve automobile safety. The Morgan traffic signal was a T-shaped pole unit that featured three hand-cranked positions: Stop, Go and an all-directional stop position. This third position halted traffic in all directions to allow pedestrians to cross streets more safely. Its one advantage over others of its type was the ability to operate it from a distance using a mechanical linkage. Morgan sold the rights to his traffic signal to the General Electric Corporation for $40000. On 10 December 1868, the first traffic lights were installed outside the British Houses of Parliament in London, by the railway engineer JP Knight. They resembled railway signals of the time, with semaphore arms and red and green gas lamps for night use. The gas lantern was turned with a lever at its base so that the appropriate light faced traffic. Unfortunately, it exploded on 2 January 1869, injuring the policeman who was operating it. A space blanket as an emergency shelter

A Space Blanket is similar to an Emergency Blanket though far smaller and a little more fragile. It insulates you from the wind and the cold. Wrap it tightly around you and you will be relatively protected. Ensure that you have some additional natural protection from the wind and snow, something like a tree, a rock or similar. In addition to being used as shelter, a Space Blanket can also be used as a fire reflector and as a signalling device. Visit OTASurvivalSchool.com for more information.

Using an emergency blanket for shelter

An emergency blanket is part of your Survival Kit and can protect you against the elements - rain, snow and wind. Wrap it tightly around yourself. Being made of insulated material, it will trap the heat inside and keep you warm and dry. Also, an emergency blanket opens up into a bag. You could use it as a sleeping bag by crawling inside it. Make sure that you have enough ventilation for breathing because being entirely insulated, it will not let any air either to come in or to escape. When lost or injured, this can be used as a signalling device to attract attention. Visit OTASurvivalSchool.com.

Pacific Dawn Cruise - Hina Cave Show in Tonga - 14/09/2009 Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu. We had a wonderful welcome by the Tongans, cold beer, wine or a coconut drink which Shaz and I both enjoyed. A tongan band played music and showed us how to dance their traditional dance. A very relaxed island with an eat all you like buffet of fish, cooked in coals and a suckling pig, island fruits and salad. Also had fire eating...entertainment. . Tonga is the only group of islands that were never colonised. A wonderful real island experience and the dance we took on video are the traditional owners of the cave where many ceremonies take place. The conch is used by two islanders who have climbed high in the cave (in footage) used as a signalling device on return from fishing trips. Something we experienced in Hawaii too, also used to announce various meetings in the village.

Booby Traps

thefilmarchive.org A booby trap is a device designed to harm or surprise a person, unknowingly triggered by the presence or actions of the victim. As the word trap implies, they often have some form of bait designed to lure the victim towards it. However, in other cases the device is placed on busy roads or is triggered when the victim performs some type of everyday action eg opening a door, picking something up or switching something on. Booby traps should not be confused with mantraps which are designed to catch a person. Lethal booby traps are often used in warfare, particularly guerrilla warfare, and traps designed to cause injury or pain are also sometimes used by criminals wanting to protect drugs or other illicit property, and by some owners of legal property who wish to protect it from theft. Booby traps which merely cause discomfort or embarrassment are a popular form of practical joke. The Spanish word bobo translates to stupid, daft, naive, simple, fool, idiot, clown, funny man, one who is easily cheated and similar pejorative terms. The slang of bobo, bubie, translates to dunce. Variations of this word exist in other languages (such as Czech and Latin), with their meaning being "to stammer." The word has also been applied to the Sula genus of sea birds, with their common name being boobies. These birds, adapted for sea flight and swimming, have large flat feet and wide wingspans, making it difficult for them to run or take flight quickly. As a result, they are <b>...</b>

Siemens LOGO based realistic signaling on miniature railway

Siemens LOGO based realistic Finnish signaling, interlocking and automatic train control on miniature railway. I did this on my school; this is my graduate work. I built everything, except PIKO tracks, switches, switch electric turnings, grass mat, the Siemens ER20-diesel loco and two german Esslingen-passenger wagons. Those were bought from miniature railway shop, but track ballast, all signals, interlocking box, level crossing signalling and "bell", automatic train path based control, signal relay groups, trackside sensors and their relays, switch turning control and locking, and all programming on LOGO:s were built and assembled together by me. Whole project took 2 months and 1700 euros. There is 5 Siemens LOGO:s on the project, two on interlocking device, one on level crossing control, one on automatic train path based control, and one on switch turning and locking. Three out of five programs on logics are larger than 125 blocks (maximum: 130 blocks on LOGO), and two of them are already on maximum. There is NO Digital Command Control (DCC) on this track, train is solely controlled by automatic train path based control, and it controls the voltage on the rails with four contactors. There is power supply of old computer supplying the voltage on the rails. 5 volts is the maximum, and by adjustable resistor and four contactors it can be dropped to 2,5 volts and reversed. All signals were built from parts NOT specifically designed to be part of signalling, but i am <b>...</b>

This loopline has four blocks operated by four motor-drived stoprails. Each stoprail device is controlled by a motor, a circuit consist of one TA7291P motor-driver chip and two 555 timer chips, and two switchs on the rail which detects a train passing on. When a train enters the block, the first switch triggers the red-signal 555 chip to output a pulse about two seconds, driving the mortor clockwise direction to change the nearest stoprail's lever arm to 'STOP'. Next, the train passes on the second switch, this switch is connected to the previous stoprails's green-signal 555 chip, then it rotates the motor anti-clockwise direction to change the previous stoprail to 'GO'. Homemade Smoke Bomb

Homemade Smoke Bomb (half beer can) Song by: Offspring - You're Gonna Go Far Kid Use 3 parts Potassium Nitrate and 2 parts Sugar, mix on low flame in pan and wait until it melts down to peanut butter. Ratio 2:3 A smoke bomb is a firework designed to produce smoke upon ignition. While there are smoke-generating devices that are dropped from airplanes, the term "smoke bomb" is used to describe the three types of devices: A smoke ball is a hollow, cherry-sized sphere of brightly colored clay filled with a smoke-generating composition that produces a forceful jet of colored smoke for 10 to 15 seconds. A smoke candle (also called a smoke generator or smoke canister) is a cylindrical cardboard tube with a fuse, usually 1½ inches (37 mm) in diameter and several inches long and resembling a giant firecracker. Such a device creates a thick cloud of smoke for up to several minutes. Uses include providing smoke for smoke testing and creating a smoke-screen for paintball and airsoft games. A smoke canister (or smoke grenade) is a metal can that releases smoke when a pin is pulled. Used for signalling by military personnel. Colored smoke devices use a formula that consists of an oxidizer (typically potassium chlorate, KClO3), a fuel (generally sugar), a moderant (such as sodium bicarbonate) to keep the reaction from getting too hot, and a powdered organic dye. The burning of this mixture evaporates the dye and forces it out of the device, where it condenses in the atmosphere to form a <b>...</b>

Heliograph

The Heliograph is basically a mirror that uses the light from the sun to flash a message across a distance, often using morse code. They were widely used in the 19th and early 20th centuries for military and also for surveying purposes. Advanced models came with a tripod. Signals could routinely be sent over distances of 30 miles or more. The equipment was light and did not need any electrical power. However anyone in or near the line of sight could potentially read the message! Although they are no longer in common use, they are frequently supplied as part of emergency survival kits, allowing the user to signal to a distant ship or airplane. This 4 inch metal Heliograph is light and strong, and being made of metal will not easily break. Apart from being useful in emergencies, the mirror is also useful for shaving (as soldiers have long known!) or adjusting make-up. This Heliograph is from one of the UK suppliers of emergency survival kits, and the fascinating thing for us is the simple physics involved in the aiming mechanism. If you simply use a mirror to reflect light for a short distance you will be able to see the bright reflection, and direct it where you want. However at any distance, this will not work, and an aiming mechanism is needed. The Heliograph has a small hole, with a series of concentric circles arranged around the hole. There is a small sighting device, attached by a piece of string, and this has a small hole in one end. The user holds the mirror up to <b>...</b>

Signal Processing and Communications for Sensor Networks

Google Tech Talks April 1, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Martin Vetterli A sensor network is a spatio-temporal sampling device with a wireless communications infrastructure. In this talk, after a short overview of the Center on Mobile Information and Communication Systems, where large scale ad hoc and sensor networks are being studied, we will address the following questions related to large sensor networks and their applications in environmental monitoring. 1. The spatio-temporal structure of distributed signals, with an emphasis on the physics behind the signals, and results on sampling. 2. The interaction of distributed source compression and transmission, with a particular focus on joint source-channel coding. This is the key theoretical question in sensor network signal acquisition and communication. 3. Applications in environmental monitoring, like for example tomographic measurements, and a description of a large scale environmental monitoring project in the Swiss Alps. This project, called SensorScope , has generated large and novel data sets for environmental questions, all available in open access. This is joint work with T.Ajdler, G.Barrenetxea, H.Dubois-Ferriere, F.Ingelrest, R.Konsbruck (EPFL), and M.Gastpar (UC Berkeley). The work is sponsored by the Center on Mobile Information and Communication Systems (www.mics.org), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Martin Vetterli received the Dipl. MHL to HDMI Adapter Live DEMO.MPG

Micro USB MHL to HDMI Adapter Cable with Charging Feature: This Micro USB (MHL) to HDMI Adapter Cable with Charging Function was formed to develop a new mobile audio/video interface standard for directly connecting cellular phones and other portable consumer electronics devices to high-definition televisions (HDTVs) and displays. The adapter standard features a single-cable with a low pin-count interface able to support up to 1080p high-definition (HD) video and digital audio while simultaneously charging the connected device. Feature: - A charging port is designed and it charges the connected device. The goal is to always keep the mobile device in a ready-to-use state. - Uses a single, thin cable to connect the mobile device to the HDTV. - The HDTV remote will control the connected device with guaranteed mixed manufacturer interoperability. - 1080p uncompressed HD video. - 8 channel (eg, 7.1 surround sound) uncompressed audio. - Supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). - MHL is connection agnostic. The first implementations dual-purpose the most popular mobile connection (micro USB) and the most popular HDTV connection (HDMI). Other than the connectors being used, no USB nor HDMI technology is being used. It is exclusively MHL signalling through the connectors and over the cable. By transporting the digital content in digital form, the full impact of the picture (whether still images or video) can be seen on HDTVs.
