The great Dutch pianist Egon Petri in a live late-1950s Basel performance of two Medtner Fairy Tales, Op.20#1 and #2. Petri never recorded these works commercially, and his powerful tone, strong sense of melodic line, dramatic tension, and incredible drive belie the fact that he was in his late 70s at the time of this concert. A pupil of Busoni, Petri was a fantastic artist and teacher who was not always at his best in the recording studio - his 1930s Liszt recordings are among his best, and some of his 1950s LPs further demonstrate his powerful artistry. In concert, however, he is often heard at his prime, as is the case here.
