Duane Allman Slide Guitar Lesson

I thought it was time I tried to do a lesson. Although I'm not a guitar teacher, I feel it is my duty to pass on some of the things I have learned. Please have patience with my teaching style. I'll do my best to get the basic idea across. I spent a lot of years learning different styles of playing. The least I can do is try to give some of you guitar players a head start. I have been a Duane Allman follower since I first saw the Allman Brothers on August 17th, 1971. I was on vacation in Boston the summer I turned 16. My friends took me to the Boston Common for the concert of a lifetime. I was so inspired by seeing the ABB and Duane, I traded my acoustic for an electric as soon as I got home. Duane was in a class all his own. He played with so much heart and soul. Just yesterday I got a CD from the Boston Common show in the mail. It is the fifth release of some of the early shows with Duane. I really brought back a lot of great memories. It also inspired me to do this vid. This lesson is pretty general. It covers some of the basics of Duane's slide technique. I learned what I know of this style by ear over the years. Look for more lessons that go into more detail on specific songs.

Kirk Lorange | Little Wing Slide Guitar improvisation

Here's some improvisation over a home made midi track of this (slightly doctored) famous chord progression. In dropped D tuning, playing through a DigiTech RP100 using a heavy brass slide. Visit the site ( www.bottleneckguitar.com ) for more info on slide in standard and dropped D. I don't ever think scales when improvising like this, I follow the chords. . The trick is to be able to see the whole fretboard as 'the chord', which is what my book package PlaneTalk teaches. You can find out more about it at www.thatllteachyou.com ... from then on, it's like joining the dots.

The early Blues Masters of the 1920s and 30s, would place a bottleneck from a wine bottle, or a short piece of metal pipe on their finger. Using this as a slide, they could move up and down along the strings of a guitar imitating singing or the cries and moans of the human voice. This style uses an early method of tuning the guitar called open tuning, that is also used to play banjo. The guitar is tuned to a D or E chord, that actually makes it easier to learn music theory. Swampy Ooze (Original Blues with Slide Guitar)

Check out my band at thehardride.wordpress.com This is played on a Gibson Hound Dog 60R. I decided to make this video since I saw a bunch of other cool slide videos on here. It's in G which is pretty easy to play slide in standard tuning. This is one of my few songs for this band that translates well to solo acoustic guitar. Most of them are designed for the trio and loud amps. SWAMPY OOZE (Copyright 2006 Robert Tripp ASCAP) There's a brokedown shanty shack, way down in the swampy ooze Where there's a hot voodoo woman, with cures for all kinds of blues You can't win with that woman, but it's so much fun to lose I know a little cabin, down by the riverside And there's a sweet country woman, who knows how to satisfy She calls me to come down and see her, when she's got a little fish to fry I'm goin' down by the seaside, down by the ocean blue Where there's a cute little mermaid, singin' a song so true I hear her callin' and I come runnin, I know just what i've got to do Thanks for listening! 30 minute Dobro Slide Guitar Set - Brother Dege

FROM Brother's Dege's all-slide CD "Folk Songs of the American Longhair" CD AVAILABLE NOW ITUNES CDBABY.COM AMAZON.COM INFO: DEGELEGG.COM Complete 30 minutes slide-guitar dobro set by Dege Legg. Filmed on September 13, 2006 at 307 Jazz & Blues Club, Lafayette, Louisiana. Directed by Matt Roberts for AOC broadcast. Writing in the old, haunted tradition of slide-blues greats, writer/musician Dege Legg breathes new life in the Delta Blues genre, not by imitation, but by infusing original songs with his experience of growing up in the Deep South—young, white, alienated, freak-in-the-country-style. With Robert Johnson on Thorazine-style slide work paired with Middle-East-Meets-South melodies, a mind-blowing new take on an old tradition emerges—one that is surreal, warped, odd, & droning, but also firmly rooted in the troubled and death-obsessed masters of old. Dege adamantly avoids the flashy, purist, mid-life-crisis white-guy school of slide playing—with its hoaky attempts at singing about country-living and faux-cotton picking. Instead you hear battered tales of apocalyptic prophesies, endless darkness, yearning stoners, backwoods drugs, hallucinatory angels, burning barns, junkyards, and the floating ghosts of the Deep South. All of it is told in an honest voice by one who lived through it, born & raised, Cajun, in small town southern Louisiana. This is the new real delta blues. New All-Slide CD coming in 08. slide guitar video

slide guitar video The slide is pressed against the strings—lightly, so as not to touch the strings to the fretboard, and parallel to the frets. The pitch of the strings can then be continuously varied by moving the slide up and down the neck. The usual limitation in fretted guitar playing of twelve pitches per octave does not apply. Indeed, in pure slide guitar playing the frets serve no purpose, other than as a visual reference. The technique lends itself to glissandi (swoops up or down to a note); in addition it has the ability to evoke sounds of the human voice, crying, sighing or weeping, or natural noises. Another strength of the technique is its vibrato, which is easily achieved by oscillating the hand so that the slide goes quickly back and forth. Many slide guitarists will use their free fingers to fret the strings if they want to employ that sound as well. Using the free fingers opens up the possibility of playing chord shapes. One strategy is to use the free fingers for rhythm work, and intersperse this with lead phrases played with the slide. The guitar may be held in the normal guitar-playing position (that is, with the face of the guitar more-or-less vertical) or it may be held flat, with the face of the guitar horizontal. In the latter case the guitar may sit flat in one's lap or on a stool, face up, or held in this position by a strap, and played standing up. If holding the guitar in the normal vertical position, it is more common to use the tube type of ...

Standard Tuning Slide Guitar

I'm posting this for a friend as an example of playing slide in standard tuning. I am by no means good enough to give lessons. If you get something out of it then that's all I care about. I'm playing in E but capoed up two frets. I'm playing slide mostly on the B, G, and D strings and using the A chord shape up and down the neck. For the intro I am using the D chord shape of the E7. For the ending lick I am using a few notes from the E pentatonic scale. I play slide in standard tuning on the electric guitar a lot, I find it's a real pain in the ass to constantly open tune.

Bottleneck Slide Guitar Boogie Blues

I've been working on this song this week. It's from a James Cotton album, "Deep in the Blues" called Vineyard blues but I don't know who played it. Open G. I LOVE this song. I was using the foot pedals to a casio electric drum set for kick bass and closed high hat and playing them with the feet but you can't hear them.I finally got the neck on my Rogue resonator guitar glued back together. FOR THE THIRD TIME! This time, screws, oak dowels and Gorilla glue but now the neck angle is off. The strings are really high which is nice until you want to play single notes or chords without the slide. With the slide it's great. I guess I'll fix that next, I think the neck is gonna hold this time. Love that gorilla glue!
