Boxing Techniques - Slipping Punches

www.myboxingcoach.com - Boxing How To Video Guide - Alongside the video, I want to outline some of the benefits of slipping punches. Slipping punches is one of those boxing techniques that offers a world of opportunity in terms of capitalizing on the openings created. By definition, when you as a boxer successfully slip a shot, you are within range to land any of a battery of your own shots. By continually slipping punches, ducking punches and rolling (or bobbing and weaving) during a boxing match, it has the effect of making it very difficult for an opponent to target your head and also acts as a feint or diversion, which applies a constant level of pressure to the opponent during the contest. It would be easy to consider slipping punches to be a reaction to a shot, as opposed to a proactive measure to control an opponent. It's very unwise to wait for a shot to come in order to effectively slip it. Unless your opponent has ludicrously slow hand speed, then the laws of physics are very much against you! Slipping punches should be used in conjunction with other skill elements, this approach will maximise the successes generated. When referring to slipping punches, I talk about slipping 'inside' and slipping 'outside'. Slipping inside means that the body is shifted to the left of an oncoming straight shot (slips are a most effective defense against straight punches and uppercuts, although because of the slight drop in head height slips also offer some protection against ...

Boxing Techniques - Slipping Punches with The Layback

www.myboxingcoach.com for boxing techniques - Slipping punches with the lay back opens a whole world of opportunity for the boxer. It's a brilliant skill that acts as a conjunction to string together complex combinations of punches. It is a skill that was used extensively by Muhammad Ali, particularly following his 3 year absence when he was less mobile on his feet. The lay back takes the upper body from long range to the edge of range, allowing the boxer to deliver a consistent shellacking of an opponent whilst ensuring that any counters fall just short. Whilst this is a simple skill to explain, ensure that you study the mechanics and video and in particular be aware of the 2 common faults when slipping punches with the lay back. Horrible guard. You could drive a train through my arms. Keep elbows tight. Also, press forward, not backwards. I just can't get over those elbows. My hands would start to drop, but since I made such an effort to keep them together, it would almost look like I was in a prayer or something. Pretty funny to watch it.

Boxing Techniques - Bobbing and Weaving

www.myboxingcoach.com for boxing techniques - It doesn't come much better than slipping punches by 'rolling with them' (also referred to as 'bobbing and weaving'.) In this Boxing How To guide I'll show you exactly how to do it like a pro! Bobbing and weaving is a skill that opens many doors, either during infighting, on the attack or on the retreat at long range. When bobbing and weaving, it's possible to evade multiple shots during a single execution. The fact that the head is moving in a non-linear way means that it's extremely difficult for an opponent to judge where to throw shots. Add into the mix that whilst bobbing and weaving you can unleash big, big shots! This video covers bobbing and weaving (rolling) in both directions; the Inside Roll and the Outside Roll. The inside bit relates to the fact that if the opponent throws a jab, we would end the move on the inside (to your left) of the jab or the outside (to your right) of the jab. Watch the video, then check out the mechanics and faults on the main site (www.myboxingcoach.com to make sure that you consider the right way and the wrong way to using this boxing technique!

Here are a few focus mitt drills that help develop quick reflexes, focus, accuracy, speed, agility and the ability to evade strikes and follow up quickly. I like to number or name the drills we're going to be training that day; Once everyone's comfortable with them I will spend some time blending them together. Boxing and Kickboxing for MMA - Slipping punches

Of all the different types of head movement slipping is the fastest and works very well to avoid straight, fast punches. It also aids in adding momentum to your lateral movements Slipping left and right will not help if your opponent is throwing looping punches like hooks or over hands and also they are no good for countering with power because you don't build up any torque. They are, however, fundamental to the jab game and keeping the head moving as you change angles. The elements to the slip are: 1. "Slip with the hip" shoot your hip out to the left to move you head right and vice-versa. 2. When countering allow your opponent to come to you by a slight pause, then slip and counter. 3. Stay forward of your hips with your head.

The art of slipping punches

We all know that boxing is a very limited martial art and offers almost no defense against grappling tactics, limited to only a few punch variations (no palms, hammerfist, elbow, ect..)contains very little trapping, and weak clinching methods. BUT....it develops great awareness, head-movement, timing, cadence, foot speed, and good habit like keeping your chin down and your hands up. Like all martial arts, I really respect boxers and boxing itself. My motto in life is to "try" first, and judge second. I respect all styles of martial arts, and really enjoy melding in techniques and aspects to further enhance my xingyi. The good habits I have learned in boxing have brought my xingyi striking and overall stance work more potent. Thank you to all Joe, kevin, the BRC and everyone else over the years who gave me pointers in boxing. Slipping is deffinately an art and takes years to master. Guys like james toney, Floyd mayweather, Jack Dempsey, these guy really knew how to avoid and counter instantly. A good counter punch is devestating and will knock your opponents brain into outer-space. lol The brain just isnt ready. constantly evolving. Constantly er-evalutating myself. - Randy

Boxing-Aaron-Pryor-skill-defense.wmv

Aaron Pryor had better boxing skills and defense than people gave him credit for. Most people are aware of his offensive skill, his speed, power, stamina, relentless pressure, etc...but not his boxing skill and defense. Alexis Arguello was one of the best body punchers ever, but notice how Pryor blocks his body punches and then counters to Arguello's face. In the middle rounds Pryor uses his boxing skill, and does some amazing and effective moves, lateral movement, jabs, slipping punches, etc..When Arguello does land the home run punch and tries to follow up to finish Pryor, Pryor makes him miss, ducks and blocks every follow up punch from Arguello. Pryor learned his boxing skill as an amatuer. Against the Soviet Union Pryor was awarded the most outstanding boxer, a rarity to get that award from the Soviet Union. Notice his great boxing skill against the excellent, very fast and future world Lightweight champion boxer Hilmer Kenty. Pryor is described as a mechanic, a masterful boxer. Boxing Techniques - Counterpunching with the Block!

www.myboxingcoach.com - The skill described in this video is the ultimate defensive 'reactive' skill and opens up the world of counterpunching. If you have checked out the videos on slipping punches, bobbing and weaving or ducking, then you will know that those skills when used in a defensive setting are not as such in response to an incoming shot but more as an evasive action to avoid being hit. Blocking a punch however is a defensive reaction, a direct response to a specific action by the opponent, in this case an incoming jab. This is a key difference that must be understood and is why blocking an opponent's jab is such a fundamental aspect of successful counterpunching. So why is blocking an opponent's jab such a good platform for counterpunching? Here's a few reasons - It's an extremely efficient defensive action using little energy. - It's an assertive defense, providing the dominant position to go 'on the attack.' -Having blocked an opponent's jab, it stands to reason that you are in range to respond successfully with your own shot. In short, if you want to be a counterpunching genius, then learning to successfully block an opponent's jab is an absolute must!

Boxing Techniques - The Mid Range Left Hook

www.myboxingcoach.com - As we've discussed in other Boxing How To video guides, a boxer during a contest is either in range or out of range. When in range, we consider ourselves to be at long range, medium range and short range. It follows then that for each of the uppercut and hook 'categories' of punches there are at least three different types; short range, medium range and long range. Each of these are thrown depending upon a number of variables, the main one being where you are in relation to your opponent. The mid-range left hook is a tremendously versatile shot. When deployed after other boxing techniques, in particular the inside slip or any right hand shot such as the right cross , it is a devastating weapon in a boxer's arsenal. When used in isolation, particularly on the retreat against an oncoming opponent, the mod range left hook is a wonderful scoring shot which clearly demonstrates a boxer's accomplished capabilities.
