Larry Coryell: A Retrospective [Slow Blues]

Larry Coryell & David Hidalgo perform "Slow Blues". This performance, taken from the Retrospective film, features David Hidalgo of Los Lobos as a guest guitarist. Larry Coryell had been a fan of David's playing after hearing him play on a recorded blues type performance, and specifically asked for David to be a part of this show. While preparing for this show at his home in Orlando, I had asked Coryell about the original recording of "Slow Blues", which can be heard on the release "Basics" from 1976 (a collection of outtakes from '68 and '69 sessions). Coryell had mentioned the reason for recording Slow Blues back in 1969 was to show that although Hendrix, Page, and Clapton were playing electrified blues, this was something he could do as well. If you have the opportunity to hear this early recording of Slow Blues, you will find that not only could Coryell play a blues just as well, if not better than anybody, it his style at which he plays that sets him apart from the rest. Although the early recording had no vocals, Coryell added vocals to this 2005 version with improvising lyrics on the spot. He had run this idea by me before heading to the stage, and we decided to step outside the box and try something a little different than the original tune. AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE ON DVD

Johnny Hiland slow blues jam-2009 Dallas Guitar Festival

This year the JHB had the honor of closing the festival with a blistering Sunday twilight set outside. Here's a killer slow bluz instrumental that was one of the highlights of his show and the festival. Tone to the bone on this one and some relatively rare slide. Even Solon looks like he's diggin' it :-) Sorry Cody, couldn't get your face in the video again. Buy the new CD and support this accomplished band. Johnny said they may be coming back to Texas soon.........bring it on, we need more.

Slow blues harmonica...

www.Harmonica123.com G harmonica, improv, played slowly. While there are some more advanced techniques used here (splits bends etc..), i intentionally played this one slow so that you could play along and maybe get some new ideas! If you're a beginner, just go for the feel and basic area that i am riffing on. Also, the repeated rhythm pattern inbetween the riffs is: holes 123(chord) draw in slowly then quicly at the end mouthing the sound YU(not you), then blow on the chord twice. if you repeat this, you'll get the rhythm pattern that i'm doing. Hope this helps.

Slow Blues in E - Fingerpicking Guitar Lesson - Bad Blues Part 1 - TABLATURE available

Many people have been asking me to do a lesson on Bad Blues, a slow bluesinstrumental I recorded in the past. So here it is. It's based on the playing of Baby Tate, a wonderful Carolina bluesman, and Lightinin' Hopkins, the texas blues giant. Here's the original version www.youtube.com It's a typical "monotonic bass" or "dead thumb" blues instrumental with a bonanza of licks and interesting ideas you can use. So here's the complete song first, after that I teach the introduction. I'm in standard tuning and playing in the key of E Four more lessons, each lesson teaching a verse, will follow. Here is the link to my previous version www.youtube.com It's slightly faster than the version I teach Here's the link to the next (second) lesson www.youtube.com TABLATURE I tabbed this song out (intro and ALL the verses) Although I explain all the positions in the lessons you'll learn faster and more easely (less rewinding) with the tab at hand. To order go to my website www.daddystovepipe.com and click on the Paypal logo. Cost €7.50 (about $10) PROMO ! If you order the tab you get a free bonus, tab to another great slow blues in E with lotsa jazz influences Here's the link to that song www.youtube.com

Mick Taylor's 'Slow Blues' from self titled album.

The 1979 self titled Mick Taylor album ( copyright Sony Music ) had a couple of fine instrumentals particularly "Slow Blues" . The drummer on this tune was Pierre Moerlen (who also played with Gomg and Brand X) . This album was released for a time on CD in the 1990's , but is now unavailable . Excuse the audio quality of this , for this video I just put speakers next to a camera.
