Slugs are fascinating animals which are descended from snails. Slugs are able to secrete different types of slime which help protect the animals from predators and dehydration and also aid the animals in locomotion. Slim trails help slugs of the same species find one another and are also used by predatory slugs to locate prey. Land slugs breath by virtue of a hole (pneumostome) on the right side of their body which opens and closes during respiration. Slugs have a single lung and their rate of respiration will vary like ours does depending upon their physical state. Slugs are hermaphrodites which means that each animal has both male and female genitals. Many slugs engage in long and elaborate courtship rituals which are believe to help ensure that slugs of different species do not mate. At the right moment both slugs will secrete large amounts of slim and then penetrate one another with their disproportionately large penises. When mating is complete many slugs will discover they are stuck. When this happens one or both slugs may then chew off their own or one anothers penis. This is an important behavior as the slugs are now only able to mate as females which helps ensure a more even distribution of genes.

So this is definitely an organic slug control method. I have tried on about four previous occassions to get video of ducks or geese eating slugs, but the video always turned out iffy you couldn't quite see it. Or the ducks/geese go squeemish - so they were so far away you couldn't see them eat the slugs in the video. I kept trying and eventually ended up with this excellent video footage. First we hear from Jen Davis, of Portland, Oregon. This is just a tiny bit that she had to say about controlling slugs. She expresses that she doesn't like to kill slugs without purpose. Having the ducks eat the slugs makes her much more comfortable. She talks about how her chickens weren't all that interested in eating slugs. With her current ducks, they eat so many slugs, that she now breeds slugs to feed to her ducks! Samantha from Woodinville, Washington feeds HUGE slugs to her ducks. We finally got out and test the 12ga wax slugs, made famous by Iraqveteran8888. Accuracy up close is impressive and damage is brutal. At further ranges (40 yards) you can see how the slug's lack of aerodynamics cause it to drift around. I speculate "long-range" inaccuracies are exacerbated since the round is transitioning from supersonic to subsonic, very quickly. ----BEFORE YOU TRY MAKING WAX SLUGS---- A guy at AR15.com posted a story of his shotgun blowing up while using wax slugs. The crayon wax is harder and denser than candle wax we found. - We were very surprised at how much fun these were to shoot. We shot over 75 rounds of these and they functioned remarkably well. Making some hits on steel at a laser-measured 200 yards with 1 oz. 12 gauge shotgun slugs. I was shooting with an off-the-shelf Mossberg 590. No special choke or anything; ghost-ring open sights. I was just getting into a groove when I ran out of shells, and ended up with a 10" group on the hits; aiming nearly 3 feet above the target. On some of the shots, you can actually see the slug streaking toward the target, due to sunlight conditions at that time.....which is pretty neat. Watch from about the two o'clock position down toward the center of the target, right to left. When I show the slugs at the end of the video, the second slug is from the first shot that hit the bottom of the target stand.

Shooting 12 gauge one ounce rifled slugs at 100 yards with the Mossberg 590. Viewers get the perspective they are taking the shots via the helmet cam. The target was an 18 x 24 steel plate, with a slight elevation drop to the target. There will probably be a sequel at some point; I want to try this again.

The easiest and cheapest way I have found to make and use 1oz slugs in your shotgun. Materials used: Lee 1oz Drive Key slug mold Federal 12g Top Gun 1-1/8oz target loads. Basic tools from my workshop. Read my disclaimer at the beginning. This works for me but I DO NOT suggest anyone try this unless you fully understand the risks involved. I have reloaded thousands of rounds of handgun and rifle ammunition and consider myself to have a good working knowledge of these processes. If YOU do not, please stick with purchasing factory loaded ammunition.

The sea slug Elysia chlorotica acquires plastids by ingestion of its algal food source Vaucheria litorea. Organelles are sequestered in the mollusc's digestive epithelium, where they photosynthesize for months in the absence of algal nucleocytoplasm. This is perplexing because plastid metabolism depends on the nuclear genome for more than 90% of the needed proteins. Two possible explanations for the persistence of photosynthesis in the sea slug are (i) the ability of V. litorea plastids to retain genetic autonomy and/or (ii) more likely, the mollusc provides the essential plastid proteins. Under the latter scenario, genes supporting photosynthesis have been acquired by the animal via horizontal gene transfer and the encoded proteins are retargeted to the plastid. We sequenced the plastid genome and confirmed that it lacks the full complement of genes required for photosynthesis. In support of the second scenario, we demonstrated that a nuclear gene of oxygenic photosynthesis, psbO, is expressed in the sea slug and has integrated into the germline. The source of psbO in the sea slug is V. litorea because this sequence is identical from the predator and prey genomes. Evidence that the transferred gene has integrated into sea slug nuclear DNA comes from the finding of a highly diverged psbO 3' flanking sequence in the algal and mollusc nuclear homologues and gene absence from the mitochondrial genome of E. chlorotica.
