A: Here tinyurl.com Q: How did you get the animation synchronized with the recording? A: First I entered the score into the notation program Sibelius. Then, I made a half-speed version of the recording (with the Amazing Slow-Downer software), and adjusted the notation to match (added the ornaments, shortened notes, mistakes made by the performers, etc). Then, while listening to the half-speed recording, I recorded a MIDI click-track. Finally, I fed the score and the click-track into some software I wrote, which adjusted the timings of score to match the click-track. The adjusted version of the score is what my animation software takes as input. Q: Is there a way I could make the bar-graph scores myself? Beethoven, 5th Symphony, 1st mvt. (animated score)

Beethoven's 5th Symphony, 1st mvt., with animated graphical score. FAQ... Q: Why did you make yet another video of this piece? A: I've recently been rewriting my music animation software, and as part of this work, I added support for smoothly-shaded triangles. I wanted to try them out in a new style of animation, and this was the first thing I came up with. The effect was different enough from the bar-graph version that I thought it was worth having both of them on my main YouTube channel (smalin). I also added the time-warp idea (that I'd previously only used in my "balls" display), and barlines (which I changed so that they light up). Oh, and I also used the dynamic levels from the recording to change the width (height) of the shapes. Q: Where can I get free sheet music for this piece? A: Here: tinyurl.com Q: What do the colors in the bar-graph score mean? A: The colors show which instruments are playing. Here's a chart: www.musanim.com The chart doesn't always match, because when two instruments are playing the same note, their colors combine. That is one of the many shortcomings of this animation. Q: Please tell me more about the composer. A: You can read about Beethoven here en.wikipedia.org Q: Who is playing this? You can learn more about the group here: www.delsolquartet.com Q: What does Corrente mean? A: Corrente is Italian for "current" (as in electrical current). It was also the name of a type of Baroque dance (called courante in French); the word meant "running." Q: How did you make this video? A: This page www.musanim.com gives an overview of the way my production process works. In this particular case, I started with a digital score and synchronized audio. A: I licensed this recording from www.royalty-free-classical-music.org It is performed by the Royalty Free Classical Music Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Keith J. Salmon. Debussy, Reflets dans l'eau (James Boyk, solo piano)

More about this video ... Reflets dans l'eau ("reflections in the water") by Claude Debussy, performed by pianist James Boyk in 1984 at the Dabney Lounge at the California Institute of Technology, where he was Pianist in Residence. In the program notes for that concert, Boyk wrote "... The Schoenberg set is technically radical in being atonal, but the esthetically radical work is the Debussy, for it has no protagonist. It is not about a person's hopes, struggles or triumphs, nor about a relation with God. It is a picture, simply, of Nature. No human is present except as observer. "Nor is any human time sense present. Perhaps this is why playing the Debussy takes me out of myself and seems to quiet and refresh the audience. It is a wonderful base from which to move on to the objective time of the Stravinsky; the internal, asymmetrical heartbeat of the Schoenberg pieces---with time extinguished in the last of them, an elegy; and finally the sociable ebb and flow of the Ravel." James Boyk can be contacted by email at boyk@PerformanceRecordings.com and you can learn more about him and his work at his web site performancerecordings.com The colors in the video correspond to pitch, with the "tonic" ("home") pitch being blue. The system of coloring is described in detail here: www.musanim.com The shapes in the video correspond (roughly) to different ways the notes move and are grouped together: parallel chords, sustained notes and chords, fast-moving, slow-moving in regular <b>...</b>

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) Q:Can I get free sheet music for this piece? A: Yes, you can download the score shown in the video from here: www.musanim.com Q: What do the colors in the bar-graph score mean? A: The colors indicate the "pitch class" of the notes; that is, every C# is a certain color (blue), every E is a certain color (olive green), etc. The piece is in the key of C# minor, so there's lots of blue and green, especially at the beginning and end. The choice of colors is based on the "circle of fifths," which you can read about here: en.wikipedia.org This method of coloring notes is described more here: www.musanim.com Because this form of coloring reflects tonality, the places where the piece moves into another key are easily visible; here's a picture of the whole piece: www.musanim.com BTW, the colors are more distinct in the high-quality version of the video. Bach, Contrapunctus 9, Art of Fugue (Kunst der Fuge)

FAQ JS Bach's Contrapunctus 9 from the Art of Fugue (Kunst der Fuge), with conventional score, bar-graph score, and video of hands playing it. Q: Wherecan I get the sheet music for this piece? A: The score in the video can be downloaded from here: www.musanim.com Q: What instrument is that? A: It's actually two instruments: a piano (the one in my living room) and a sampled pipe organ (an Alborn-Galanti Silbermann Archiv). The piano has MIDI Out (from a Moog PianoBar) which was recorded and played back to play the organ. Q: How did you make this video? A: First I videotaped myself playing it, and recorded both the audio (from my Kimball grand piano) and MIDI (from a Moog PianoBar attached to the piano). Then, I rerecorded the audio and MIDI for each of the four voices separately; I did this so that I could color-code the video based on voice and to get a performance that was a little cleaner (it also afforded me the opportunity to add a 16-foot stop to the bass line in a few places). The conventional score is from screenshots from the notation program Sibelius, and the bar-graph score was generated from the MIDI using my own custom software. All these things were assembled in Adobe Premiere and converted to Flash with the On2 Flix converter. Q: I'm having trouble reading the score. A: It's a little better if you watch it in high-quality mode: www.youtube.com Q: Is there a way I could make the bar-graph scores myself? Beethoven - Für Elise (piano solo)

Für Elise, by Ludwig van Beethoven, performed by Stephen Malinowski, with scrolling bar-graph and conventional scores. FAQ Q: Where can I get the music for this piece? A: The score in the video is available for free here: www.musanim.com And here's a version for a solo melody instrument (like flute): www.musanim.com Q: What does "Für Elise" mean? A: For Elisa; read more about it here: en.wikipedia.org Q: I am trying to learn this piece, but the rhythm is confusing. Help! A: You are right, the rhythm is confusing. I had the same trouble when I was first trying to learn the piece. The reason for this is that Beethoven is playing a rhythmic trick on us; the piece is notated in 3/8 time, but the notes sometimes form 3/8 groups and sometimes form 3/4 groups (or, at the beginning, 2/4). I've made a version of the score that shows how this works; you might find that it is easier to learn from this: www.musanim.com Q: Did Beethoven write this when he was deaf? A: Beethoven started losing his hearing in 1796, when he was about 26 years old; Carl Czerny said that he could hear music in 1812, but he was almost completely deaf by 1814. He wrote Fur Elise 1808 and 1810, so he probably could hear it, at least a little. In any case, he could certainly hear it perfectly "in his head," since he could read music (and hear in it his "mind's ear") just as easily as most people can read words. Q: What is that obnoxious high-pitched sound? A: Here is a version with that sound removed: www <b>...</b>

Beethoven, Symphony 9, 1st movement (complete), Allegro ma non troppo, Philharmonia Baroque

Philharmonia Baroque playing the first movement (Allegro ma non troppo, un poco maestoso) of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, accompanied by a scrolling bar-graph score. FAQ Q: Can I download this video? A: Yes, here: musanim.cerizmo.com Q Where can I get this recording? A: From Magnatune magnatune.com Q: What do the colors in the bar-graph score mean? A: The colors show which instruments are playing. Here's a chart: www.musanim.com Q: Why are the notes different sizes? A: Each group of instruments (strings, woodwind, brass, percussion) is shown in a separate layer, and has a different size; this helps you see when instruments in more than one group are playing the same pitch at the same time. The timpani is blurred because that's how it sounds to me. Q: Please tell me more about the composer. A: You can read about Beethoven here en.wikipedia.org Q: Is there a way I could make bar-graph scores like this myself? A: The Music Animation Machine MIDI file player will generate a display like this; you can get the (Windows) software here: www.musanim.com There are lots of places on the web where you can get MIDI files; when I'm looking for MIDI files, I usually go to the Classical Archives site first: www.classicalarchives.com Q: Could you please do a MAM video of ______? Malinowski, Fugue in A minor

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for this video Q: Who wrote this music? A: Stephen Malinowski (smalin on YouTube) wrote it in 1982. Q: Who is performing? A: Nobody; this is the synthetic playback from Sibelius (the notation program). Q: Why is the sound so bad? A: It's YouTube's audio compression. The "normal quality" version sounds better than the "high quality" version, so you should probably watch that. Q: What happened to the comments? A: Something happened at YouTube, and the "normal quality" version of the video became unavailable. YouTube wouldn't allow two copies of the same video, so fixing the problem required that the old video (and its comments) to be removed. Q: Can I get the sheet music for this? A: Yes; here is the page for all of Stephen Malinowski's compositions: www.musanim.com Q: You haven't answered my question. A: You may find the answer here: www.musanim.com .

Lo, Intermezzo, opus 28 #2, piano solo

About the piece: This piece is one of the Five Intermezzi by Canadian composer and pianist Vincent Lo. This composition (Lo's opus 28) won first place in the British Columbia provincial and national judging of the 2008 CFMTA Canada Music Week Music Writing Competition ( www.cfmta.org ). On his "About me" page at the SoundClick website ( http ), Lo lists Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, and Balakirev as his favorite composers, but this intermezzo is very much in the spirit of Brahms's shorter piano pieces. Lo can be contacted through his YouTube account (zeryx28) or his website ( www.audiomuse.ca ). About the performance The performance is by Stephen Malinowski (smalin on YouTube), done using the conductor program (www.musanim.com ) on the evening of August 7th, 2008. About the visualization: The visualization contains two bar-graph scores. In the upper score, the notes are colored to delineate the main melody, bass line, and other parts. In the lower score, the notes are colored to show pitch class, using a "harmonic coloring" in which the colors from the painters "color wheel" are mapped to the notes of the musician's "circle of fifths" ( www.musanim.com ). This lets you see the frequent modulations in the piece; for example, the movement from the green/brown palette (f minor, 0:37 to 0:43) to the violet-centered palette (f-sharp minor, 0:45 to 0:50), and the contrasting (somewhat faster) middle section in which the green/violet area dominates (c minor, 1:17 to 1:42). .
