thefilmarchive.org In a 1983 Time magazine article it was stated that the KGB has been the world's most effective information-gathering organization. It operated legal and illegal espionage residencies in target countries where the legal resident spied from the Soviet embassy, and, if caught, was protected with diplomatic immunity from prosecution; at best, the compromised spy either returned to the Soviet Union or was expelled by the target country government. The illegal resident spied unprotected by diplomatic immunity and worked independently of the Soviet diplomatic and trade missions, (cf. the non-official cover CIA agent). In its early history, the KGB valued illegal spies more than legal spies, because illegals penetrated their targets more easily. The KGB residency executed four types of espionage: (i) political, (ii) economic, (iii) military-strategic, and (iv) disinformation, effected with "active measures" (PR Line), counter-intelligence and security (KR Line), and scientific--technologic intelligence (X Line); quotidian duties included SIGINT (RP Line) and illegal support (N Line). New Waterford,Nova Scotia Today (Part 2) Music By Paul Brandt Small Towns And Big Dreams Geography New Waterford is located north of Sydney and northwest of Glace Bay. It is named after the city of Waterford, in Ireland. It is located near the ocean and is bordered on one side by cliffs. New Waterford has a rather flat terrain and has several fresh water lakes located nearby. Economy New Waterford is a fishing port and former coal-mining community that has been in economic decline in recent years. There are ongoing efforts to revitalize the area's economy including a slow but steady increase in jobs in the technology sector. Many residents had been reliant on the coal and steel industries, which are now closed. The last local mine closed in 2001. New Waterford's current main industry is the Catalogue Teleservices Company call center for Spiegel, Newport News, Carabella and AB Lambdin. Eight-thirty whistle At 8:30pm every day the local volunteer fire department sets off its air raid siren. This has a long history, and continues in tradition to this day. The original intent of the whistle was to let small children know that they were to be inside or on their parents property. This is a clip about a small town in South Mississippi called Shubuta, which is located approximately 100 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, and was bypassed with a new four lane highway leaving it virtually abandoned by the passing traffic. This clip also features the larger of two "hanging bridges" located there. Local legend and historians claim there were hangings performed here as recent as the 1940's.
