So You Want to Study at SOAS

Full disclosure: I am two exams away from graduating next month with a BA in Politics and Economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies. The experiences alluded to in this clip are all things that have actually happened to some of my wonderful friends in the past three years. Happy graduation! Funny to think we were all this adamantly idealistic once. SOAS, I love you anyway. -Lily twitter.com facebook.com paintedlily.tumblr.com

SOAS Students occupy directorate in protest at deportations of cleaning staff

Raw video from the office of SOAS director as students argue with him to use his influence to secure the release of cleaning staff kidnapped by immigration police on Friday morning. Press Release: Ken Loach, director of the film Looking For Eric, stated: "This raid is the action of a bully. Migrant workers are amongst the most vulnerable - poorly paid and far from home. Recent action by Unison to secure better wages and conditions at SOAS was good news. Now we wonder if the SOAS cleaners are being targeted because they dared to organise as trade unionists. We should all stand with them in solidarity in the face of this victimisation." Full, updated press release below - please circulate far and wide. *********************************** Without any advance warning from their ISS bosses nor the university management, SOAS cleaning staff were confronted by a hefty team of immigration officers at 6.30am this morning (Friday 12 June). Fearful cleaners were detained on SOAS premises as the officers demanded to see their papers. Some were taken into rooms of the university to be interviewed. A shocked witness said that someone had to intervene when a heavily-pregnant cleaner was being manhandled by immigration officers. Nine cleaners were taken away by Immigration Officers. SOAS staff and students, many who had been at a protest at the sacking of another cleaner and UNISON Branch Chair, Jose Stalin Bermudez, were shocked and outraged by the raid and fear that the cleaners may be ...

SOAS Professor: 'Global warming is a myth'

Philip Stott is Britain's leading climate-change denier and Professor of Biogeography at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. He has built a career on slating environmentalists and displays an extreme antipathy towards those with concerns about genetic engineering, portraying them as left-wing extremists. In May 2001, the American Embassy and SOAS jointly hosted a Conference that advanced the interests of Genetically Modified crop manufacturers. Stott chaired the conference, and not a single representative from any environmental organisation spoke at the event. The environment correspondent of The Guardian has described Prof. Stott as 'an alarming academic' who pushes George W. Bush's agenda. The Director of the Environmental Research Foundation has said of Stott: 'It is evident that Professor Stott has abandoned his role as a serious scholar and has become a cheerleader for the biotech industry.' In this videoed speech to a largely American audience, Stott presents his case against climate change, styling himself as an expert on the issue, despite his never having had a single paper published in a scientific journal in the fields in which he most frequently applies this 'expertise', eg climate change or tropical ecology.

SOAS Academic Shirin Akiner is Uzbekistan Regime Agent

Lecturer in Central Asian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, Dr Shirin Akiner has been condemned by human rights groups, liberty campaigners and Craig Murray (ex-UK Ambassador in Tashkent) as an apologist for brutal Uzbek dictator President Karimov. This short report on the Andijan massacre concludes with an interview with Dr Akiner in which she attempts to downplay and justify the horrific murders by Karimov's regime. In late 2005, shortly after this video was first broadcast, complaints against Akiner flooded in to the then Director of SOAS, Colin Bundy. Mr Bundy, to the outrage of many, publicly defended Akiner in her justification of the massacre of the peaceful Uzbekistan opposition. SOAS continues to employ Akiner in a prominent role, whilst mainstream British broadcast media outlets appear to have decided to no longer invite her to comment on Central Asian affairs. Viewers may wish to complain to her present boss: Professor Paul Webley, Director and Principal of SOAS Email Address: pw2@soas.ac.uk Telephone: +44 207 898 4014 Fax: +44 207 898 4019 A further interview with Akiner may also be of interest: www.youtube.com

Comedy - Mark Steel at SOAS Occupation

Steel on SteelI started doing stand-up in 1982, around the circuit of bizarre gigs, going on after jugglers and escapologists and people that banged nails into their ear. Then came the Comedy Store and Jongleurs and getting bottled off at The Tunnel, and then a regular slot on Radio 4's Loose Ends, where I met Joseph Heller, Christopher Lee and Gary Glitter.I did 4 series of 'The Mark Steel Solution', one for Radio 5 and the others on Radio 4, and a radio series about cricket, which provoked a whole page of fury in the Daily Express. I presented three series of a sports programme called 'Extra Time' which I was very proud of, especially as it went out on Tuesday nights on Radio 5 to possibly no listeners whatsoever. Then there was four series of the lectures on Radio 4, a book called 'It's Not a Runner Bean', another one called 'Reasons to be Cheerful', and 3 television series of the lectures on BBC 4 and BBC 2.I've done weekly columns in Socialist Worker, the Guardian and the Independent. There was a book called 'Vive le Revolution', and I've been on various panel shows like Have I Got News For You and QI, and on Room 101, and on Question Time I got very confused when I insulted a member of the Tory shadow cabinet, and afterwards he said I was splendid and invited me for a drink. And I've spoken at lots of demonstrations and union meetings and protests, and appeared at quite a few benefits, and yet capitalism still seems to rule the world. Maybe I'm a jinx.

To join our mailing list, e-mail rebetiko [@] soas.ac.uk The Famous SOAS Rebetiko Band ISTANBUL--ATHENS--HYDRA TOUR -- OCTOBER 2008 "Rebetiko: Music without Frontiers" Outline document: The Famous SOAS Rebetiko Band is based at London's School of Oriental and African Studies. It developed out of four years of music seminars held at SOAS by the Band's organiser, Ed Emery. In 2007 we toured to Italy (Rovigo Festival). This year a more ambitious tour will take us to Istanbul (10-14 October), Athens (15-16) and the Greek island of Hydra (Hydra Rebetiko Conference, 17-19). We play the Rebetiko music of Greece, a broad genre of urban songs and instrumental music which developed in and around the major port areas of the Eastern Mediterranean -- Smyrna/Izmir, Istanbul, Syros, Piraeus and Thessaloniki. Rebetiko is hard to define as a genre, not least because it incorporates elements from all the musical cultures of that area. Music has been a matter of censorship in both Greece and Turkey, with rebetiko in particular being banned in both countries in the 1930s, and it is still a battlefield for contending nationalisms. Our band is a mixed ensemble of Greeks, Turks, Cypriots, British and other nationalities and hyphenated identities in-between. For us, music is promiscuous, prolific and flows where it will.
