The Bright Light Social Hour - "Back and Forth" - SXSW 2010 Showcasing Artist

Jon Salmon JonSalmon7@gmail.com my youtube page: www.youtube.com The Bright Light Social Hour is an American indie rock band from Austin, Texas. Born out of a university art-rock collective, The Bright Light Social Hour has evolved into an unabashedly wide-screen rock group, melding classic rock energy and dynamics with funk, soul, and experimental influences. The band formed at a small liberal arts college outside of Austin. Band founders Curtis Roush and Jack OBrien set out to create bold, funky rock and roll drawn equally from studied classics and contemporary experimentation. The young scholars soon kidnapped Jo Mirasole from a nearby high school drumline and tempted prolific Austin singer-songwriter AJ Vincent with Curtis homemade organic cookies. The completed lineup recorded their new EP, Back and Forth, at an analog studio in south Austin. Anchored by fiery ensemble performances and rich harmonies, the record features their first single, Back and Forth (Part 2) a foot-stomping lovers plea, steeped in dark funk. In October 2009, The Bright Light Social Hour won the Dell Lounge Sound and the Jury contest to play the Austin City Limits Music Festival. The band competed with over 1500 bands from around the world in multiple rounds of public and industry voting, culminating in a final battle of the bands at Antones Nightclub two nights before the kickoff of ACL. Supported by hundreds of their local fans, the band lit up the stage to a decisive victory, garnering a ...

Sociology is a Martial Art -Pierre Bourdieu

" I often say sociology is a martial art, a means of self-defense. Basically, you use it to defend yourself, without having the right to use if for unfair attacks". Pierre Bourdieu Pierre's Bourdieu's forty books and countless articles represent probably the most brilliant and fruitful renovation and application of social science in our era. The highly influential, at times controversial intellectual--a longtime Professor of Sociology at the College de France--passed away in January 2002. A "committed" thinker in the vein of Foucault, his work is concerned with elucidating the processes of symbolic violence and cultural domination in various areas of social life. His most well known book, Distinction (1979), addressed these themes in an effort to overcome the opposition of objectivist (Marxist) and subjectivist (Weberian) theories of class. In the late nineties he became something of a celebrity scholar, one of the world's most important academics actively associated with the anti-globalization movement. Bourdieu himself argued that scholars and writers could and should bring their specialized knowledge to bear on social and political issues. His powerful critiques of the neoliberal revolution were the natural outgrowth of a lifetime of research into economic, social and cultural class domination among peoples as disparate as Algerian peasants and French professors, and as expressed in everything from amateur photography to posture. L'art de la bise

French short movie explaining how to kiss properly. English translation: In French, we say " as simple as a hello" to describe something easy. But saying hello in France is not that easy at all. Especially for a foreigner! Because the French do not simply say "hi" or shake hands: they kiss! And kissing is an art in itself. Those who haven't learned it in their childhood like most French kids - "Come on, give a kiss to auntie Géraldine!" - are often feeling uneasy. The uncomfortable foreigner try to lean forward with his lips pushed forward and his arms hanging limply by his side not daring to touch the other, not knowing by which side he should start not knowing if he's actually supposed to touch the other with the lips or just kiss the air. Don't laugh ! The poor German exchange students know perfectly well this embarrassement when they have to meet their host families and when suddenly, everybody is trying to kiss them. To kiss, 4 questions have to be answered: When? Who? How? How many? When : When you meet a friend for your spare time sometimes in the morning at work and always when we're visiting friends. Of course, the quantity of kissing is proportionate to the amount of friends. If there are already 15 persons at the party, you would starve before getting access to the buffet. Those who are used to waving their hands to say hello may find it a bit tiresome... Who? : You need to consider your family links, the level of friendship, the working relationship, the age ...

Ai Weiwei detained. Here is his TED film

www.ted.com The news that Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has been detained by authorities has prompted significant concern here at TED-HQ. We had shown a film of him at last month's conference, an unexpected and courageous statement about his treatment by the government, social change, the power of the web, and his hope for the future of China. The film, which was shown as Ai Weiwei himself watched live over the web in the middle of the night, prompted a huge standing ovation from the TED audience. Read the news story www.bbc.co.uk TED is a non-partisan, nonpolitical organization and we understand the Chinese authorities concern at anything which might provoke social unrest. But for anyone who believes in the power of ideas, of human imagination, it is heartbreaking to see one of the world's great artists shackled in this way. We will be tracking developments carefully. Here is the film.

'An important message about the arts' - an animated video by artist David Shrigley

For more information about Save the Arts, please visit www.savethearts.org.uk. Over a hundred leading artists including David Hockney, Damien Hirst, Anthony Caro, Howard Hodgkin, Anish Kapoor, Richard Hamilton, Bridget Riley, Antony Gormley and Tracey Emin have joined the campaign to make the case against the proposed 25% cuts in government funding of the arts. The campaign is launched today with the release of a new video animation by artist David Shrigley highlighting the effect of the funding cuts and a new work by Jeremy Deller with Scott King. Each week the work of a different artist, created in response to the campaign, will be released. Mark Wallinger will present the next project. Supporters of the artists' campaign will be asked to sign a petition which will be sent to the Culture Secretary, Jeremy Hunt. It points out that it has taken 50 years to create a vibrant arts culture in Britain that is the envy of the world and appeals to the government not to slash arts funding and risk destroying this long-term achievement and the social and economic benefits it brings to all. The artists acknowledge that reasonable cuts and efficiencies are necessary but they fear that the 25% cuts being proposed will destroy much of what has been achieved and will have a particularly damaging impact on national and regional museums and their collections. The campaign is being organised by the London branch of a national consortium of over 2000 arts organisations and artists ...

Walrus TV Artist Feature: Doze Green Interview

Going in and out, it's pulling stuff from inside. It's based on magic, it's about shadow, it's about darkness, it's about light, it's about understanding, it's about destruction. It's about build-destroy. -Doze Green Doze Green merges influences from his East Coast graffiti and b boy background with a painting style he refined on the West Coast. The resulting artwork is complex and intensely symbolic, serving as a means of both social commentary and self-awareness. His interest in the duality of the human condition is reflected throughout his pieces. Doze Green's work has been displayed in cities across Europe, Japan, Australia, and the United States.
