The Militant-led Liverpool city council of 1983-1987 was the subject of vicious abuse. But the torrent of government and media lies, about "finanical chaos" or else "financial irregularities" were seen for the black propaganda that they were by the ordinary people of Liveropol. The Liverpool council's struggle against cuts and soaring rent and rate rises imposed by previous council regimes, following punative government cuts to the rate support grant in Merseyside, inspired an army of support to battle prime minister Margaret Thatcher and the Tory government in 1983-1987. The council, led by Militant Tendency supporters (now Socialist Party), refused to raise rents or rates to compensate for central government cuts, and demanded extra money, in order to build decent houses and other facilities for the working class men, women and hildren of the city. This film by Leslie Ann Barrett, shown at the Militant Rally 1985, captures a moment in that battle. The Achievements of the 47 councillors who stood firm against the government: 6300 families rehoused from tenements, flats and maisonettes 2, 873 tenement flats demolished 1315 walk-up flats demolished 2086 flats/maisonettes demolished 4800 houses and bungalows built 7400 houses and flats improved 600 houses/bungalows created by 'top-downing' 1315 walk-up flats 25 new Housing Action Areas being developed 6 new nursery classes built and open 17 Community Comprehensive Schools established following a massive re-organisation <b>...</b>

The Attlee government created the modern welfare state and the National Health Service, and nationalized the public utilities. It sought to construct a New Jerusalem, a socialist commonwealth. "Aflijido", el Toro de la Vega de 2011 del torneo desarrollado en Tordesillas (Valladolid), ha sido abatido por el lancero a pie Óscar Bartolomé Hernández, conocido como 'Zamorano', ante la presencia de "muchísimo" público que esperaba desde primera hora de la mañana. Según ha informado el alcalde de Tordesillas, José Antonio González Poncela, el lancero consiguió imponerse en el controvertido trofeo taurino tras asestar la lanzada mortal al astado en la zona de los pinares del entorno del campo de fútbol. El evento taurino comenzó a las 11:00 horas y fue a las 11:27 cuando Zamorano, vecino de Tordesillas, alanceó a 'Aflijido', de 608 kilos, y acabó con la vida del toro. No es la primera ocasión en la que Óscar 'Zamorano' consigue abatir al Toro de Vega ya que se alzó con el trofeo hace unos años pero a caballo. Son miles de personas las que cada año asisten a Tordesillas a presenciar un espectáculo que provoca el rechazo del Partido Antitaurino y la defensa "a ultranza" de los vecinos de este municipio vallisoletano que considera que es "una tradición".

Marcia Stirman, chairwoman of the Republican's Group of Otero County, New Mexico wrote a letter to the editor in the Alamagordo Daily News listing 16 reasons why she is a Republican. One reason stated, "I believe Muslims are our enemies. Barack Obama is a Muslim socialist." Countdown's Keith Olbermann asks why the GOP presidential candidate hasn't renounced yet in McCain in the Membrane. John McCain, who has harshly criticized the idea of sitting down with dictators without pre-conditions, appears to have done just that. In 1985, McCain traveled to Chile for a friendly meeting with Chile's military ruler, General Augusto Pinochet, one of the world's most notorious violators of human rights credited with killing more than 3000 civilians and jailing tens of thousands of others. The private meeting between McCain and dictator Pinochet has gone previously un-reported anywhere. According to a declassified US Embassy cable secured by The Huffington Post, McCain described the meeting with Pinochet "as friendly and at times warm, but noted that Pinochet does seem obsessed with the threat of communism." We live in a world of Republican framing. Every single day on this site we combat and argue against that framing. But one thing I never thought would be necessary to do would be to teach Americans the concept of socialism. The great right-wing noise machine has made "socialism" some great to-be-feared "ism" like the Communism of the Soviet Union, conjuring up day-long bread lines and lazy welfare queens living off your hard labor. But the truth is somewhat less sinister than that. The five happiest countries in the world are...wait for it...democratic socialist countries. The countries are socialist in that taxes go towards services for the citizens. Top-ranking Denmark offers the social safety nets of universal health care, retirement pensions, college educations and even child care, as well as amazing income equality. Truly, there's nothing scary about socialism as it is practiced around the world. It's time for liberals to take back the word and embrace what how it would actually improve the life for most Americans.
