Fast, lightweight, great pocket clip and big handle...that's the SOG Trident folder. I was initially prejudiced against it, quite incorrectly, for its larger handle vs blade size. Upon use and inspection I have found the Trident however to be an excellent tactical or larger EDC blade and my misgivings were unfounded. Its 3.75" AUS8 blade has great sweep and lots of belly with a sharp tip for utility and emergency defensive roles. I much prefer the plain edge versions of the Trident and if kept sharp, it will address most cutting tasks with ease. The blade comes sharp, terminating from a flat grind from the swedge and its steel choice is adequate at the price point. The assisted deployment is fast and authoritative. The handle provides lots of real estate and adequate traction for gloved hands in conventional and reverse grips. The SOG pocket clip is another standout, providing ultra deep and secure pocket carry. This SOG bayonet clip should be an industry standard. It is strong, has a low profile, is reversible, and carries the SOG log (which I don't mind). On this version, the clip can be DuraCoated in appropriate color should a lower signature be desired. Lockup is tight once the pivot screw is adjusted. Carry weight is a reasonable 3.8 ounces and is superior to many other folding tacticals at this size. The slotted handle for cord cutting is kind of a superfluous feature that I feel few will use, however its non-interfering and does not diminish utility. The safety ...

Which knife is better, the SOG SEAL Pup or the Camillus Pilot Survival Knife? They're similar in size but differ greatly in weight and blade material. The Camillus is much heavier due to the awesome butt cap on the handle, and the SOG's serrations are far superior to the saw teeth on the ASEK. The Camillus blade is 4-7/8" long and is made of 1095 tool steel, which is easy to sharpen. The saw teeth on the spine work well on wire and nails, but fall short on cutting metal and plastic sheeting. The size of the blade and the protective metal casing on the sheath make this a safe choice for all skill levels. The Camillus Pilot Survival Knife is on the "must have" list of many survivalists for three simple reasons: It's a comfortable, safe, and reliable survival tool. The SOG SEAL Pop is light, balanced, and tough. The blade is made of AUS 6 S/S, which makes it hard to get a good edge in the field. That said, it maintains an edge better than a softer blade. I'd recommend the SOG SEAL Pup knife to anyone looking for a decent camping/utility knife. A straight edge would be better for bushcraft, but for urban survival applications, the serrations will gnaw right through metals, plastics, nylons, and other synthetics with ease. The protective sheath and managable size make this a safe knife for all skill levels. Which knife proves best? Watch the video and find out. Be sure to leave comments and a rating. The SOG Creed looks to be an outsanding rust-resistant woods knife that will chop and spit wood with authority. In some ways, it lends capabilities to the SOG line that have been lacking in fulfilling these survival roles. Many of the SOG blades are impressive but are mostly purpose built fighters. The Creed retains the coolness and heredity of that storied SOG Fixed Blade line but seems to step up in wilderness capability while retaining the excellent SOG ergos. Sharing the SOG Tech-Bowie grip, the knife inherits the same grip functionality of that blade (previously reviewed in TNP). The Kraton grip, while a little short (would prefer ½ to 1 inch extra), provides excellent traction, good looks, functional double SS guard, and a hammering-capable pommel with SOGs proprietary cylinder nut. The 12.6 oz 7.5 inch blade is made out of a slab of impressively thick (¼ !) AUS8 steel which should exhibit good corrosion resistance, edge holding, ease of sharpening, toughness since it possesses the usually decent SOG heat treatment. The blade shape is unusual and striking and wears a beautiful Scotchbrite finish. Its dramatic upward sweep gives the design outstanding belly for utility, skinning, and wilderness craft tasks should the blade meet such. The heft and forward balance of this blade are impressive and should allow the Creed to greatly exceed the woods capabilities of many of the other SOG fighters (like the Tech Bowie, Gov-Tac, Agent, SOG Bowie, Trident 2.0, SEAL Team ...

The planets have aligned in the SOG Aegis and a nearly perfect lightweight tactical and larger sized EDC blade has been created by SOG. It is no secret that I advocate LIGHTWEIGHT, well-built, fast deploying, solid folders that use good materials. Oh yeah, I want these knives to look cool, have a deep, tip-up pocket clip, and have an affordable price. It sounds like a lot to ask for but it really isn't. In this quest to promote these design criteria I haven't relented and indeed my high rating of the SOG Flash series knives is because they achieve many of these qualities so fully. Enter this Desert Digital model of SOG Aegis. Indeed this is the exact coloration I encouraged SOG to make (in the Flash series), of course utilizing the much more popular (and useful) plain edge which I also advocate. And of course, at least for now, they can't keep it in stock and it's a popular choice. In this Desert Digital coloration and with the black TiNi coated AUS-8, 3.5 blade, it is a striking knife for those who appreciate tactical items. But the looks would count for nothing if the design elements failed to deliver utility and possible defensive capabilities. From my study of the design, the Aegis should deliver on all accounts. The drop point blade offers a wickedly sharp tip while still offering plenty of belly for slash cuts. Add to this an auto-like assisted opening (love SOGs opening), outstanding subdued and DEEP pocket clip thats mounted on the correct end (tip up, reversible ...

Back again with my SOG SEAL Pup, this time with the latest mods. I've added a better sharpening system (speedy sharp), a fold-out saw, a commando saw, more fishing hooks, a ranger band, and more reflective tape. This video is just a review. If you'd like to see this knife in action watch my other SOG SEAL Pup review/demonstration. The sharpening system (speedy sharp) is very versatile and is by far the best modification on this knife. The carbide won't rust, and it sharpens all types of blades including serrations. My suggestion to knife manufacturers is to start adding survival tools to sheaths. That way the blade can still have a full tang and the knife's strength won't be compromised. It's probably easy enough to make a whistle part of a sheath during the manufacturing stage. I'd also like to see survival knife accessories that can be attached to sheaths with a removable fastener through grommets. Tell me what you think and thanks for watching.

In the field of daily carry knives, the SOG FLASH 1 is a fast, lightweight, well-built, and securely carried companion. I have many of these knives and have used them extensively for both duty and personal use. As my VIDEO shows, the FLASH 1's size is perfect as is the deep carry clip. Add its good quality AUS8 steel and most importantly it's feathery 1.2 oz weight (not 1.4 oz ike I said in video) and you have the near-perfect daily carry knife. The full flat ground blade has amazing slicing performance. For a knife you'll have on your person at ALL times to open packages, cut food, etc. it's my top recommendation. ///////////// This is Nutnfancy's first knife review, originally made for Amazon.com! PART 1 of 2 Here the the SOG Powerlock EOD Model B61 multi-tool (MT) goes up against my standard of measure for full-size MTs, the Leatherman Charge TTi. This one of course is my Cabelas special edition camo version. The Powerlock is the black oxide EOD version. In this 2-part series, Nutnfancy pits them against each other in terms of size, weight, ease of use, comfort, toughness, versatility and features, carry case, quality, and price. You guessed it: the Charge TTi (or the AL, ALX, Ti) wins in most but not all categories. The SOG Powerlock suffers from cumbersome handle covers, sympathetic and less elegant tool deployment, a ¼ driver with a finicky lock, a tiny chisel-ground pen knife blade, a less versatile and heavier sheath, and its 1.2 oz heavier. Thats not to say the SOG Powerlock is bad: it offers a lot of strength with its compound leverage cams, has faster deploying pliers, has good tool variety (including better scissors and a punch), can use ¼ sockets, and its a lot cheaper than the Leatherman Charge. But again the Charge just shines: take for instance its quick detachable and strong pocket clip that can truly turn it into an EDC (every day carry) pocket tool (albeit a 8.2 one!). At least as of now, its just hard to beat the speed, ease of use, excellent blades, outstanding sheath, weight efficiency, and bit versatility of the Leatherman Charge series and it again comes home as the champ in the comparison. A $100 blade that promises 30% more toughness than S30V and 80% better edge holding and 20% better rust resistence than 440C? OK I'm interested. This is the first knife I've seen use this 20CV CPM steel and from all indications and preliminary reports, it should be a good performer. High carbide content, lots of vanadium, a chromium-rich matrix (excellent rust resistance), and outstanding sharpness set the 20CV steel SOG Team Leader apart from other blades (it was also offered in AUS8 steel as well). Of course that wouldn't mean much if the knife sucked. But suck it doesn't and in fact its an impressive stainless stell tactical fixed blade offering. Since it weighs in at just 6.8 oz (9.4 oz with sheath) it would make an ideal LBE knife as well (BlackWater MOLLE adaption shown). Handling the Team Leader for me was key in liking it: its balance and feel are superb. The handling characteristics inspire confidence and it would serve in excellent fashion in the tactical or camp knife POU. The DuraTech 20CV willow leaf blade is perfectly sized for such applications and features a full flat grind. It arrives razor sharp unlike some other SOG fixed blades and has decent belly for the slicing chore (it turned out to be an excellent food prep knife). The tip is highly tapered and will achieve excellent penetration in a thrust cut (Boker Deser Dagger compared for reference in vid). Be careful of the somewhat thinned tip: it's probably too weak to hammer on in cold survival ...

At this weight and blade size, few knives will compare favorably against the excellent SOG Flash II. It's an ideal larger EDC blade that deploys wicked fast, locks tight, and carries well. The Flash series also shows other makers exactly how to make a pocket clip: removable, hardened stainless steel clip the buries the knife in the pocket. The FRN handle was wisely NOT lined with stainless steel and as such is super light, strong, and surprisingly comfortable. The full flat ground AUS8 blade is one of my favorite designs out there; an excellent cutter. The pivot screw can be adjusted. If SOG Knives were smart they would produce this knife in Desert Digital Camo AND Coyote Brown PLAIN EDGE versions. Unfortunately many of their special edition Flash models come only in less desirable combo edges (yuk). Some may feel the Flash II may not be strong enough for heavy duty, torsional cutting tasks and that may be the case. But for probably 98% of your cutting tasks it should be more than enough blade. And at amazingly svelte 3.3 oz you'll actually have it on you when you need it. Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 9 out of 10

The hit parade on the SOG Mini Aegis begins with its weight. Mark down 2.0 oz on the score card. That makes this littler Aegis easy to integrate into any system. It makes an ideal EDC choice. The full flat ground AUS8 blade did not arrive in razor sharp condition but it was easy enough getting it there on my own. Once sharpened, the blade is ready for precise "surgical service" with good belly and fine tip. Jimping topside is perfection: sharp and precise even in this black TiNi AE-22 version (preferred). This makes for some kickin' ergos that are ehanced by a comfortable GRN handle (traction inserts more for looks but they're fine), a deep carry pocket clip, and excellent thumbstuds. Deployment speed and lockup are solid wins and I noted no meaningful problems with either. This is a fast knife and gets into action quickly. Durability should be excellent with the AUS8 steel choice as long as some care is given to the Aegis tip. Value is moderate with pricing in 2011 on this black version coming in around $50. I would like to see it reduced to around $40 to be more competitive. But as it is, this is another ideal backpacking utility blade that I love and it goes into Hall of Fame status in TNP.///////////////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 9 out of 10 (one point ding for higher price)

Another winning SOG EDC blade. Like it's standard-setting Flash 1 stablemate, the Twitch II has the perfectly shaped full flat ground AUS-8 blade with cryogenic heat treat. It slices superbly, is perfectly sized for all kinds of utility tasks, and wears a decent edge. More importantly, it sharpens fast and readily. The assisted opening flipper design rocks and rockets the blade out fast. The safety is unneeded but present if you're paranoid about pocket deployment. Pocket clip is skeletonized and strong and carries deep enough. The aluminum handle scales are good looking and tough but don't provide much traction (which is ok for the POU). Weight is 2.4 oz and much less with the Lowe's plastic handled version of the Twitch II (which loosened up in hard use, shown). Lockup on this version is excellent. Value is adequate, maybe a bit more than other comparable capability blades. But with its ultimate thinness and speed you will fall in love with the Twitch II as it becomes a transparent part of your system. /////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: Twitch II aluminum scales: 8.5 of 10; Twitch II Lowe's plastic scales: 7 of 10 as shown, 9 if solid lockup assured

If SAWC are important (and they should be), the SOG NW Ranger should be a top consideration in the role of soldier and lightweight camp/survival knife. Its 5.2" x .150" AUS8 clip blade is perfectly executed: full flat ground, excellent and useful jimping on the spine, and it arrives razor sharp. It cannot be improved. The AUS8 steel is a great choice and upgrades the older NWRs that were in softer AUS6. The "NDubR" is offered in both blackened and satin finishes and both rock. For all around use, I'd prefer the Satin finished model; for solider use I'd go with the blackened one. The Kraton handle is properly sized and comfortable. While it does not have a hammering pommel, I don't think it needs one. The stainless steel crossguard drops low to protect the index finger in a conventional hold and is milled for traction. Balance and speed are excellent. While its quality is high, the leather sheath disappoints. It is hard to affix onto LBE and is traditional. As such if it gets wet, it will stay wet, and it's slow to extract. I would like to see a Kydex or plastic option direct from SOG, just like the Seal Pup Elite knives. Value is amazing on the NWR, made possible by overseas, tightly controlled overseas production. For a lightweight survival, camp, utility, or even tactical option, you will need a miracle to beat the value.///////////////// Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 9 out of 10 (10 out of 10 if Kydex sheathed)/////////SWAC= Size and Weight Considerations

The excellent SOG Gov-Tac steps into to fill the void left by the loss SOG Government Agent in the SOG lineup. Like the Agent, the Gov-Tac makes a smart deployment knife choice, that is a knife thats well suited to LBE use by soldiers. A medium sized blade tactical and survival blade, the Gov-Tac offers a several advantages. At 13.4 oz carry weight, it is around 2.0 ounces lighter than most KaBars while still serving up a 6 blade. Made of AUS8 steel, this 6 inch blade offers excellent utility and defensive capabilities with some rust resistance. Other upsides include: excellent jimping on blade spine, hammering capabilities, excellent shaped SS double guard, grippy Kraton handle is roomy for different grips, and good looking grey spacers in handle. The Kydex sheath is excellent and has an improved Hypalon retention strap. This sheath uses the American Sportsman QD attachment which spaces the knife away from your carry platform. Cost is reasonable being around $80 at good outlets like yourcornerstore.com. The Gov-Tac may not be as fast in hand as the Gov Agent (and is 2.0 oz heavier) but it has a better steel and more hand filling grip. The only notable downside would be the lack of sharpness as it comes out of the box. But in most other areas this is a squared away all-purpose blade. As such this knife is a worthy successor to the Agent and is a recommended soldier blade for both combat and utility ops. /////////////Nutnfancy Likeability Scale: 8.5 of 10 (price considered)
