Simple Solar Battery Charging System

I enjoy sending and receiving low powered Morse code (called "QRP" CW) over the amateur radio bands. I power most of my equipment with batteries that I charge in my backyard off a 40 Watt solar panel. Since Colorado receives a lot of sunshine, throughout the year, I almost never have any difficulty charging batteries when it's convenient for me. Most of the time, especially for these old/used gel cell batteries I do not use a charge controller* and rely on simple "alligator" clip leads for my connections. When time and money permit I hope to power most of my home off solar. However, as it is now, we subscribe to Xcel Energy's "Wind Source" to power our entire home at this time. It's something we've subscribed to for many years but believe it'll be more fun, in the future, to create our own power! *Although I don't often use a charge controller I do, at times, insert a diode into the charging circuit to keep the batteries from discharging through the panel if the sunlight gets blocked by heavy cloud cover or I forget and nightfall occurs, etc. However, I even try to avoid using the diode, when I know I'm going to be home most of the day, since it creates a little bit of a voltage drop in the charging circuit... I have started building my battery bank that I will be charging with my solar panels. I may be working backwards but because the batteries were available and free I decided to start there. This is four out of the eight batteries I will be using in the bank. I am putting them all in as a twelve volt system so the batteries will be in parallel. I have been debating on running this as twelve volts or twenty four volts so I will start with twelve and switch over to twenty four if it is a better solution.

Simple Solar Update - Inexpensive Lead-Acid Battery

I was able to purchase this "Lawn and Garden" Lead-Acid battery for less than $20 at Wal*Mart. So, I thought it would be worth experimenting with since its size and capacity will probably reduce the number of times I need to charge it (compared to the smaller gel cells I featured in my previous video: www.youtube.com The battery is rated at 275 "Cold-cranking" amps, which isn't of much value to me since I'm not starting a motor or anything. Although it doesn't say, a quick internet search suggests this battery is rated at about 18 amp-hours - which puts it at about one third the cost of a comparable gel cell. Problem is, it's probably not rated for much of a deep discharge since lawn equipment provides a continuous trickle charge. Nevertheless, I'll keep experimenting with it to see if it's cost-effective. I use an in-line "Watts Up" meter to monitor the voltage. So far, I've allowed it to drop below 12 volts (the QRP radio gear I power with it is very voltage tolerant). With a half day of full sunlight I'm able to bring it back up to well over 13 volts - which last many days of lower power communications on my amateur radio station. In the video I also mention that I'm now using Anderson "Power-Pole" connectors to eliminate a lot of the clip leads I've been using. Actually, I've been using these connectors for over a year now but just got around to introducing them to my simple solar stuff. They're great connectors and seem to be growing in popularity as a low voltage <b>...</b>

Charging a Car Battery with a Solar Panel and Charge Controller

If you connect a solar panel directly to a car battery, it will eventually overcharge the battery and damage it. That's why you need to use a solar charge controller. This is my own design using the latest microcontroller and MOSFET circuitry. It consumes less than 1mA (that's very little) and has a neat little blue LED that tells you the battery voltage. It can also be connected in various different configurations so you can do clever things like charge two batteries from one solar panel.
Automatic solar to battery dump to grid tie inverter

I wanted a method to always keep my batteries fully charged and have the means to be able to reach full float voltage of 27.6vdc and then dump automatically to the grid and sell power until the batteries get down to about 26vdc. I was able to do this automatically by using a wind charge controller with dump load circuit and a 200 Amp battery isolator relay. The charge controller is adjustable so I can set at what voltage I want to dump the excess power (27.6vdc) and thus keep the panels always making power and pushing it to the batteries and grid. This happens now unattended in an automatic fashion and it is inexpensive and easy to do. With this design, my batteries are always fully charged and never "cycle" so they will last years and have full power when needed. The charge controller is from Coleman Air and the battery isolator relay I got from Amazon. I get questions all the time about how much it costs to do something similar, so here it s. For just the solar you can do the same 4KW system for about $16000 if you buy the components and do the labor yourself.

Upgrade to the solar shed, have just fitted a huge 220AH deep cycle battery weighing almost 60KG. This gives us a total of 290AH capacity between the two deep cycle batteries, or around 150AH of usable capacity only draining the battery bank down to 40-50%. All major wiring is 8-AWG, including the battery links. The system is setup in parallel giving 12v@290AH.

Solar powered portable battery box - generator PROTOTYPE

I have constructed this portable solar generator to learn. I believe that no matter how much you read and discuss until you have a go you never truly understand. Since making this video I have made some adjustments and improvements - I might post a video to show these soon. The 'box' is currently connected to two panels that combined give 20w 18v at best - I am aware that even with good sun it would take above 20 hours to fully charge the 18 amp hour battery from absolute flat (I do not intend to ruin the battery by running it absolutely flat!). When I am happy that I know what I am doing I will construct a 60w panel and buy a grid tie inverter. If successful I will add more panels. Thanks for any constructive comments :) !!

My home made solar and battery generator setup. I made this 345 amp Hour 12 VDC setup. It has a 2000W (4000W peak) inverter and three 27DC deep cell batteries in parallel. Solar panels are 45 watt. Total cost was about $550. The inverter and panels/controller are from Harbor Freight, Batteries can be found most anywhere and the rest I had. If you do this be SURE to use at LEAST #4 ga wire on the 12 volt side as the amps will get very high under a heavy load. Do not even consider using less than #4 ga and #2 ga is even better. Make sure the batteries are the same size as eachother within the bank.

Direct grid tie systems simply convert the DC of wind, solar or hydro to AC power and feed power back to the main panel to slow down or spin back your meter. Although more efficient, when the grid power fails on a direct grid tie system, the user has NO POWER. This system in this video utilzes a hybrid grid tie with battery backup inverter/charger.
