Clifton Fifer -- Buffalo Soldier Song Performed by Clifton Fifer at the Texas Heritage Music Foundation/Schreiner University Coffeehouse Series at Schreiner U's Cailloux Student Center, February 2007, in celebration of Black History Month. Clifton is a two-time Texas State Teacher of the Year as a social studies and history teacher at Peterson Middle School. He is also an actor and musician, having won Earnest T. Player Awards for his roles in Driving Miss Daisy, Big River, Lilies of the Field and To Kill a Mockingbird. He travels the state doing living history shows on African-Americans and Native Americans in Texas, combining these into his stories of Buffalo Soldiers in the West. Clifton is a presenter for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Buffalo Soldier program, and also does shows on the evolution of native American music styles with Tony Gallucci. The Coffeehouse is put on monthly by Dr. Kathleen Hudson, executive director of the Texas Heritage Music Foundation of Kerrville, Texas, and is hosted by student Prairie Flower. In addition to Clifton, other performers for February included Miss Nash, Conan, Lorraine Lemon, Jessica Lott, and the Greg Griffin Blues Band. Check out the Texas Heritage Music Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the great variety of Texas music, and encouraging education and scholarship. On Wednesday 22nd August at around 7:30pm Rhys jones, 11 was walking home from football in Croxteth, Liverpool when a teenager on a bike fired 3 shots one of which hit Rhys in the neck, his mother raced to the scene and cradled her dying son but Rhys died in her Arms. His two friends witnessed the gunning down of Rhys. I hope their is justice for Rhys and the bastad responsible is caught. How can the killers parents and friends protect him when he cold bloodedly gunned down a innocent boy. Didn't Rhys's parents emotional appeal and sadness make them think to give up thier son or friend and end Rhys parents grief. It could have been thier son that was shot dead and they should think about that because they would also want justice for thier son. Please whoever knows anything, please give up the killer and help the parents loss by gettting justice for Rhys Jones, an innocent boy caught up in all this gun crime madness. Put down the guns and knives before another innocent life is stolen, Before another innocent child has fallen! SOLDIER SUMMIT ASSAULT At 7440 feet, the crest of the Wasatch Plateau in Utah is the fifth highest railroad pass on a US transcontinental mainline. It was the highest point for the former Denver & Rio Grande in Utah. Assaulting the steep grades of Soldier Summit takes brute force horsepower. Many trains require both mid-train and rear end helpers. In 2000, when this show was recorded, the diesels of the Rio Grande, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific worked together to muscle trains over the pass. Union Pacific runs here now, but the Utah Railway and BNSF have traffic rights and Amtrak's California Zephyr runs two trains a day. Classic black and orange Rio Grande SD40T-2s are seen in daily use as helpers on UP's coal trains, and on the famous "trash train." During this time, the Utah Railway's fleet of SD40s was joined by six MK5000s and five Australian-built SD50s. UP's E-units and a C&NW Dash 8 also make an appearance. Watch as extra power is cut into the trains at Helper for the push up the hill. The descent sees the line change direction 180 degrees at the Gilluly Loops, before continuing west to Provo. Coal is a major commodity here, and you'll visit UR coal loading facilities. The red rocks of Utah and snow-capped mountains, the famous formations of Castle Gate, the horseshoe curves at Gilluly, and the slide area at Thistle create a spectacular display.
