Thank you to everyone for all your loving support, comments, messages, videos and letters.... it has meant more to my family and I than I could ever tell you all. To contact me you can always find me on twitter @JonahMowryReal The story of "Whats goin on.." I made this video August 2011, a few weeks before school was about to start. I was 13. It was a very emotionally confusing and dark time in my life. I made the video at 4:00am in the morning. I hadn't been sleeping at night for a long time; I had too many things going on in my head, tearing me up inside. I was dreading going back to school. All I could think about were all the bad things that had been happening at school last year, every year for that matter. I just couldn't bare to go through that anymore. Over the summer I finally just accepted who I was. Only my closest friends knew. I was scared. I wanted to come out to my family but didn't know how to. I was done pretending to be "fake" happy, pretending hateful words didn't hurt me, and done hiding it all from my family. This video was made for me, my family, and my friends that had moved on to High School who were worried for me. I wanted to say to my High School friends that I was going to take a stand and I was going to be OK. And to the haters at my middle school that I'm not going anywhere, I am who I am. A Day in the Life: Joel Hircheck - Regent University
My name is Joel Hircheck and I'm going to school online to Regent University School of Undergraduate Studies. My major is Professional Communication with a minor in Organizational Leadership. I work at Safe Harbor Animal Shelter and Hospital. And I've been a veterinary technician and surgery technician for about three years or so now. And we do a lot of pit bull rescue and rehabilitation of animals, along with being a full hospital too, so it's a pretty neat job. I usually like to try and go work out in the morning. Usually get to work early in the morning... "Safe Harbor, this is Joel." What I have to do is get all the clients who are bringing their dogs in for surgery, get them all checked in. Tell our surgeon what we're doing for the day. Then we go ahead and get started with surgery. And basically work all the way through until the end of the day when I send the animals home and give the clients their instructions. I usually head home, eat some dinner and then spend some time with my roommates, my girlfriend if she's got off work or if she's not in class herself. And just enjoy my time at home and then go to bed and get ready to start the next day. I really had no plan to go back to school. I was thinking my opportunity to go to school was done' cause now I have to work full-time and I have so many other activities that I need to be a part of. Bystander Effect - people watch girl being abducted
When there's only one person around in a situation, they're much more likely to lend assistance to people in need, whether it's to help pick up something they're dropped or something more important like warn them they're about to step into traffic, etc. When there's a group of people, though, no one acts. They all expect someone else will do it, so no one volunteers or pauses. This is honestly a chilling video to watch. I don't have kids but it catches my breath when the two men catch on that something's going on and without any verbal communication between them, only similar body language (ie their mutual movement in that direction) it's amazing to me that, while they're both intently watching the man they are approaching, there is a single second when they Both launch into action, again without communicating anything verbally, but something triggers the same response from both men. How fascinating! It reminds me of wild lions in Africa who are following their prey but something simultaneously all animals involved and they leap to action. I'm teaching a Social Psychology class right now and am really getting intrigued by the idea of how we send and receive communication without speaking. What is it about that situation that influenced those men though others around them didn't bother? And what was it in that single second where they both jump into a run?
