Metastasis or Metastaseis ("dialectic transformations"), is an orchestral work by Iannis Xenakis, a Greek composer-architect and a major figure in the postwar development of musical modernism worldwide. He is particularly remembered for the pioneering use of stochastic mathematical techniques in his compositions, including probability (Maxwell-Boltzmann kinetic theory of gases, aleatory distribution of points on a plane, minimal constraints, Gaussian distribution, Markov chains), game theory, group theory, Boolean algebra and Brownian motion. Metastasis was inspired by Einstein's view of time (a function of matter & energy) and structured on mathematical ideas by Xenakis's colleague Le Corbusier. The 1st and 3rd movements don't have a melodic theme to hold them together, but rather depend on the strength of this conceptualization of time. The 2nd movement does have some sort of melodic element. A fragment of a 12-tone row is used, with durations based on the Fibonacci sequence (1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34...) The preliminary sketch for Metastasis was in graphic notation looking more like a blueprint than a musical score, showing graphs of mass motion and glissandi like structural beams of the piece, with sound frequencies on one axis and time on the other. In this video I tried to display this by presenting the frequency spectrum (0-20.000Hz) of the piece and how Xenakis actually "drew" music. The storyline was first mentioned at the conclusion of the "Sinestro Corps War" in Green Lantern vol. 4, #25. As the war between the Green Lantern and Sinestro Corps reaches its climax, the four Green Lanterns of Earth (Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Kyle Rayner) are told by the Guardians Ganthet and Sayd of the "Blackest Night" prophecy. According to the prophecy, the two existing Corps would be joined by five new ones, each driven by a specific emotion and empowered by a specific color of the emotional spectrum, leading to a "War of Light" that would subsequently destroy the universe. Johns says the prophecy has its origins in the story "Tygers" by Alan Moore, which touches on the rising up of the Guardians' enemies, like the Weaponers of Qward, Ranx the Sentient City, and the Children of the White Lobe, and the destruction of the Green Lanterns, showing Sodam Yat and Mogo dying. Atrocitus, however, denies the accuracy of this prophecy, suggesting that it blended the Blackest Night and the Sinestro Corps War with pure falsehood. Like the Unleashed Medley ( www.youtube.com ), I had an urge to try one for Colors. Unfortunately it didn't turn out nearly as planned. For those not in the know, the game has 6 stages with 3 acts each and 1 stage with 2. The credits of the game are about 13:50. Since I'm such a damn completest, I couldn't do this without knowing I hadn't fit even ONE of the acts in the song. Unfortunately, the second acts of each zone (specifically Sweet Mountain, Aquarium Park, and Starlight Carnival) tend to be on a totally different rhythm than the other two acts, which makes transitions much more difficult considering there has to be some kind of natural progression into other acts AND other zones. So in other words doom. When I got to Planet Wisp I decided I would come back at a later time and maybe just cut out the troublesome acts, but I went along with it anyway to finish out with Terminal Velocity. As for the Robotnik intro, It replaced the orchestral intro since I thought cutting it would meet the time limit (for the game's credits AND the fact that I don't have unlimited uploads yet wtf). It didn't... so I threw that in there in it's place to say "Hey this is a WIP". Which also explains the lack of such an orchestral outro.... Enjoy? *shot* Constructive criticism is more than welcome. People from all facets of life gathered in Darlington, Maryland last week for a celebration of art, music, dance and nature in the spirit of love and freedom hosted by The Philadelphia Experiment. Enveloped by the woods, an art installation called The Spectral Oracle (made possible by a grant from The Philadelphia Experiment) captivated the attention of festival attendees and transformed them by participation into collaborative artists. Starting near the pathway to the effigy by the lake, the first of five signs in a clearing through the woods toward the piece simply asked viewers to, "free your heart from hatred." These five signs, lit by motion sensor-activated lights at night and decorated by large colorful satin curtains by day, invoked a serene and contemplative journey toward the heart of the piece. The four succeeding signs read, "free your mind from worries," "live simply," "give more," and "expect less." During the day, ten animal "spirit guides" served as the mediators between the concept of speaking a prayer or wish to the universe and feeling present and grounded as an integral and important part of our planet. Two reptiles, two insects, two fish, two fowl and two mammals (five on either side of the altar) encouraged thought and introspection on topics such as relationships, community, courage, direction and purpose.
