Visualizing video at the speed of light — one trillion frames per second

MIT Media Lab researchers have created a new imaging system that can acquire visual data at a rate of one trillion frames per second. That's fast enough to produce a slow-motion video of light traveling through objects. Video: Melanie Gonick. The speed of light. Laser pulse shooting through a bottle Trillion FPS

We have built an imaging solution that allows us to visualize propagation of light at an effective rate of one trillion frames per second. Direct recording of light at such a frame rate with sufficient brightness is nearly impossible. We use an indirect 'stroboscopic' method that combines millions of repeated measurements by careful scanning in time and viewpoints. The device has been developed by the MIT Media Lab's Camera Culture group in collaboration with Bawendi Lab in the Department of Chemistry at MIT. A laser pulse that lasts less than one trillionth of a second is used as a flash and the light returning from the scene is collected by a camera at a rate equivalent to roughly 1 trillion frames per second. However, due to very short exposure times (roughly one trillionth of a second) and a narrow field of view of the camera, the video is captured over several minutes by repeated and periodic sampling.

The size of the Visible Universe can never be seen

The speed of Light is 186000 miles per second 1 light year is the distance light travels in one year, 5878630000000 ( trillion ) miles and the nearest star Proxima Centauri, is about 4.22 light-years away. and the distance of the visible universe at 13.7 billion light years Since light travels at a finite speed, it can only have traveled a certain distance in the 13.7 billion years the universe has been around. The light which can reach us defines a giant sphere (radius = 13.7 billion parsecs) around the earth. If something is further away than that, its light won't have reached us yet. Since light-speed is the speed limit for everything in the universe, nothing from beyond this region will have reached us yet, so no one knows what's beyond it.

Thanks Tony Darnell

Yahuah Created the Heavens Are How Big?

The distance from Earth to Pluto is about 4000000000 miles. It takes about five hours for Pluto's light to travel to Earth. Our nearest star, Alpha Centauri, is over 4 light years away! So, if we could travel at the speed of light at midnight January 1st, we would reach Pluto by about 5am the same day, but wouldn't get to our nearest star until April 19th -- over four years later! It is estimated that our galaxy, The Milky Way, contains at least 200 billion stars, with the nearest galaxy, the Andromeda galaxy, 2.5 million light years away with an estimated one trillion stars! In fact there are vast amounts of galaxies with whole clusters of galaxies millions of light years across in diameter. In 1999, the Hubble Space Telescope estimated that there were 125 billion galaxies in the universe, with some scientists now believing there could be many more than that. The visible universe is a sphere with a diameter of about 92 billion light-years, with enough stars in the observable universe for each of the 6+ billion human beings -- plus assign each one 2000000000000 (2 trillion) MORE stars each! Let's face it: we humans are but tiny, diminutive creatures stuck on THIS planet with the vast universe as the backdrop of a gigantic plan that has evil and good involved with it. This means something terrible has gone WRONG. MIT's trillion frames per second light-tracking camera

The equipment captures images at a rate of roughly a trillion frames per second (Footage courtesy of MIT) A camera capable of visualising the movement of light has been unveiled by a team of scientists in the US. The equipment captures images at a rate of roughly a trillion frames per second - or about 40 billion times faster than a UK television camera. Direct recording of light is impossible at that speed, so the camera takes millions of repeated scans to recreate each image. The team said the technique could be used to understand ultrafast processes. The process has been dubbed femto-photography and has been detailed on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab's website. "There's nothing in the universe that looks fast to this camera," said Andrea Velten, one of the researchers involved in the project. Scan lines To create the technique, the scientists adapted a "streak tube" - equipment used to take data readings from light pulses. It works in a similar fashion to the way pictures are created on traditional television cathode ray tubes, scanning one thin horizontal line at a time. Since each image is only equivalent to one scan line on the television set, many hundred scans had to be taken to create a single frame. The scientists did this by repeating each shot, angling the camera's view with mirrors to record a different scan line of the object. As a result, the technique is only suitable for capturing an event that can be recreated exactly the same way ...

Angels are made of light - "Pwned" in under 90 seconds

Here are just a few scientific problems with the Islamic claim that angels are made of light. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan during world war II was constructed of 60KG of Uranium 235. Although only about 1.38% of its material created the resulting explosion it produced a blast of approximately 13 kilotons of TNT and instantly killed tens of thousands of people. - en.wikipedia.org Let's assume a measly 60KG angel. Because light is pure energy E=mc^2 says that this would be E=60 * 299792458^2 which is five quintillion, three hundred and ninety-two quadrillion, five hundred and thirty-one trillion, seventy-two billion, four hundred and twenty million, nine hundred and five thousand, eight hundred and forty joules 5392531072420905840 joules there are 4.184 * 10^12 joules in 1 kiloton of TNT, en.wikipedia.org 5392531072420905840 / 4184000000000 = 1288846 Kilotons of TNT This means that converting 60KG into pure energy would result in a 1288846 kiloton explosion, or a bomb... 99141 times bigger than the one dropped on hiroshima. But Gabriel wasn't the only angel Muhammad said visited the Earth. The Quran says that God sent angels to fight in battles along side Muslims. Chapter/Verse 8:9 - One thousand angels. 3:124 - Three thousand angels. 3:125 - Five thousand angels. 5000 angels is equivalent of a bomb 495709946 times bigger than the one dropped on Hiroshima.

The Sacred Space Within And Without - You and Your Inner Universe

This video is a kind of response to the endless talk of apocalypse on TV channels, radios, news magazines and articles. A recent article published in one of the blogs suggest that one in every three children fear earth apocalypse. This fear of apocalypse is used conveniently by many to force people to turn to God. The Romans who converted newly to Christianity said to have woke up everyday with the dread of Apocalypse. The possibility was so real for them. Earth is a precious planet. A planet like earth teaming with life is yet to be found in the known part of the universe that has been so far mapped. Not that they may not exist. But even if they exist, we cannot discount the value of earth in the survival of humanity. Life on earth may come to an end someday as a part of the time cycle, as things are subject to decay. But that may not be the end of humanity. This video presents the vastness and immensity of the universe and its incredible size and dimensions, compared to the tiny earth and its inhabitants. Yet life on earth is very precious, especially human life. There is a great spiritual significance underlying all life, especially human life because we share the same resources and structural elements with the universe. The same space that exists in the universe exists in us. We need to identify ourselves with the indestructible space and experience our oneness with it. When we become the space, instead of the matter and energy, we become immortal. Some of the ...

The Hole in the Andromeda Galaxy

The Andromeda Galaxy is a spiral galaxy approximately 2500000 light-years (1.58×1011 AU) away[4] in the constellation Andromeda. It is also known as Messier 31, M31, or NGC 224, and is often referred to as the Great Andromeda Nebula in older texts. Andromeda is the nearest spiral galaxy to our own, the Milky Way. As it is visible as a faint smudge on a moonless night, it is one of the farthest objects visible to the naked eye, and can be seen even from urban areas with binoculars. It is named after the princess Andromeda (Greek: Ανδρομέδη Andromédē) in Greek mythology. Andromeda is the largest galaxy of the Local Group, which consists of the Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way Galaxy, the Triangulum Galaxy, and about 30 other smaller galaxies. Although the largest, Andromeda may not be the most massive, as recent findings suggest that the Milky Way contains more dark matter and may be the most massive in the grouping.[9] The 2006 observations by the Spitzer Space Telescope revealed that M31 contains one trillion (1012) stars,[10] several times more than the number of stars in our own galaxy, which is estimated to be c. 200-400 billion.[11] While the 2006 estimates put the mass of the Milky Way to be ~80% of the mass of Andromeda, which is estimated to be 7.1 × 1011 solar masses,[2] a 2009 study concluded that Andromeda and the Milky Way are about equal in mass.[12] At an apparent magnitude of 3.4, the Andromeda Galaxy is notable for being one of the brightest Messier objects ...

The miracle of the immune system (Harun Yahya)

One of the subjects to which countries attach the greatest importance is "defence." They must always be ready in the face of internal and external threats of all kinds. Possession of a well-organised army is essential if a country is to survive. At stake is the integrity of the country. To that end, great care is taken over military training and armies are given the most up-to-date equipment. The same thing applies to human beings. Human beings also have enemies. We are unable to see them, however, and may not even be aware they exist. Yet they are always there... In the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. In short, everywhere there is life... From the moment we are born we are surrounded by a cunning and aggressive foe. These are germs: bacteria, fungi and viruses... They eat, reproduce, hunt and are hunted. However, an army which expertly protects against all forms of external threat is constantly on guard in our bodies: our "immune system!" A regulated community with more than 1 trillion members... The largest, best ordered and most disciplined army known in the universe! In this film we shall get to know micro-organisms and germs and witness the way our bodies fight against them. You will watch in amazement the way that friendly and hostile forces behave in an intelligent manner. You will also realise that the intelligence which prevails in this war and during each and every phase of it, belongs to Allah, their Creator, and you will also understand ...

The Immensity of it All

The immensity of it all! How can we even begin to fathom it? Randall Niles takes a shot... Our sun is about 93 million miles from the earth and it takes about 8.5 minutes for its light to reach us. Alpha Centauri is the next closest star about 25.2 trillion miles away! It takes 4.2 years for Alpha Centauris light to reach us! Lets put that in some kind of perspective -- Place a marble (our earth) about nine inches from a basketball (our sun). If you imagine that each inch represents about 10000000 miles, your model represents the distance from the earth to the sun. Now, lets say you want to add Alpha Centauri, the next nearest star, to your model. You would need to grab another basketball and walk 40 miles away! And thats the closest one! When it comes to IMMENSITY, lets try for some more perspective Speed of Light 186000 miles per second. Light Year 5.8 trillion miles (measurement of distance, not time). The distance from California to New York is a bit over 2400 miles. The circumference of the Earth is a bit over 24000 miles. The circumference of the sun is a bit more than 2.7 million miles (1.3 million earths could fit inside the sun). The sun is about 93 million miles from the earth (8.5 minutes for light to reach the earth). Our solar system is about 5.5 billion miles across (If the solar system was a large room, the earth would be a speck of dust, and the sun would be a large, bright grain of sand). Our own Milky Way Galaxy is 100000 light years across (Thats 100000 ...

Astronomers find first habitable planet outside solar system

www.timesofearth.com SAN JOSE, Calif. — Astronomers have discovered the first planet outside the solar system with the potential to support life. The planet orbits a red dwarf star called Gliese 581, 20 light years from Earth, in the middle of the star's habitable zone, meaning that temperatures on its surface are just right for life to develop. US-based scientists found the planet using precise measurements from the Keck telelscope in Hawaii, which has been scrutinising Gliese 581 for more than a decade. The new planet, called Gliese 581g, is one of several known to be orbiting the star, but is the first to be discovered in the so-called Goldilocks Zone, where the distance from the star means that temperatures are neither too hot or too cold for life to exist. "We had planets on both sides of the habitable zone - one too hot and one too cold - and now we have one in the middle that's just right," Steven Vogt of University of California, who worked on the team that discovered the planet, said. He says that less than 500 planets have been discovered outside of the solar system, and the fact that this one lies in the middle of the Goldilocks Zone suggests that habitable planets could be extremely common. "The fact that we were able to detect this planet so quickly and so nearby tells us that planets like this must be really common," he said. "If the local stellar neighborhood is a representative sample of the galaxy as a whole, our Milky Way could be teeming with ...

When Will Time End?

It now seems that our entire universe is living on borrowed time. How long it can survive depends on whether Stephen Hawking's theory checks out. Special thanks to Ivan Bridgewater for use of footage. Time is flying by on this busy, crowded planet... as life changes and evolves from second to second. And yet the arc of human lifespan is getting longer: 65 years is the global average ... way up from just 20 in the Stone Age. Modern science, however, provides a humbling perspective. Our lives... indeed the life span of the human species... is just a blip compared to the age of the universe, at 13.7 billion years and counting. It now seems that our entire universe is living on borrowed time... And that even it may be just a blip within the grand sweep of deep time. Scholars debate whether time is a property of the universe... or a human invention. What's certain is that we use the ticking of all kinds of clocks... from the decay of radioactive elements to the oscillation of light beams... to chart and measure a changing universe... to understand how it works and what drives it. Our own major reference for the passage of time is the 24-hour day... the time it takes the Earth to rotate once. Well, it's actually 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds... approximately... if you're judging by the stars, not the sun. Earth acquired its spin during its birth, from the bombardment of rocks and dust that formed it. But it's gradually losing that rotation to drag from the moon's gravity ...

Alien Planets & Eyeball Earths: The Search for Habitable Planets

Find out, in 1080p, where to look for Extraterrestrial Life. What planets are likely to have the right conditions? And what makes Earth special? So far, in this age of planet hunting, we've yet to find anything like our solar system... with rocky inner planets in neat circular orbits, and evenly spaced gas giants on the periphery. Instead, astronomers have glimpsed a diverse planetary zoo, with giant planets in wide orbits around their parent stars, others that swing in so close they leave a comet-like tail, or molten rocky worlds emblazoned with oceans of lava. These finds have added new complexity to theories of how solar systems emerge in the birth of a star. As dust and gas swirl into the newborn star, they form a proto-planetary disk. Within this Frisbee-like structure, gravity sculpts planetary bodies that grow in size, sweeping up smaller bodies that form around them. Current theory holds that giant planets, forming on the periphery, commonly migrate into the inner solar system. This confirms the observation of so-called hot Jupiters orbiting perilously close to their parent stars. But these giants may clear out smaller rocky planets that form close to the star, creating a planetary desert... just where you'd hope to find life. Does that make the search for another Earth a wild goose chase? To find out, a group of planet hunters, using the Keck Telescope in Hawaii, examined a sample of 166 sun-like stars within 80 light years of Earth. To their surprise, they found ...

Could ET be right next door? Planet hunters search Alpha Centauri star system

Alpha Centauri is 4.37 light years away from our Sun. Alpha Centauri May Have Habitable Planets, if Only We Can Get There Astronomers Seek New Home Closer to Home By Joel Achenbach Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, June 1, 2009 The nearest Earth out there in space? It might be right next door, galactically speaking. Two teams of astronomers, one from the United States and one from Europe, are in a race to find a planet orbiting our near neighbors Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B, twin stars that appear from Earth as a single point of light. "I'm betting that there are planets like Earth or Mars or Venus around either or both of those stars, and the only question is whether we'll be able to detect them," said Debra Fischer, an astronomer at San Francisco State University. Backed with US government funding, she is using a telescope in Chile to assemble 100000 observations of the Centauri system. If the astronomers succeed in detecting a planet there, it will be a scientific bombshell -- and it will raise the question of how we might someday send a probe to get a closer look. Alpha Centauri A and B may be our nearest sunlike neighbors (a third, smaller star in the Centauri system, the red dwarf Proxima Centauri, is a hair closer to the Earth), but it's still a long haul from here. The problem with interstellar spaceflight is the "interstellar" part. We happen to live in a universe that is strikingly vacuous. The Centauri system is nearly 26 trillion miles away ...

EARTH-LIKE PLANET Kepler 22-B Full Article/Report NASA

Full Article at: www.popsci.com NASA makes a striking discovery and finds Earths Twin it is 2.4x Bigger then Planet Earth and is right in the habit Zone where all plants and living objects could live with room temp like ours and clouds like ours we might have found LIFE! and its only 600Light years away! it takes 28000years to travel 1 light year so it would approx take 16800000 Years to travel with NASA's fastest technology at this time on earth! If we can somehow Travel at the speed of light which was reported impossible by Eisenstein Time would in fact slow down and begin to stretch then stop almost as you are teleporting. The planet is smack in the middle of what astronomers call the Goldilocks zone, that hard to find place that's not too hot, not too cold, where water, which is essential for life, doesn't freeze or boil. And it has a shopping mall-like surface temperature of near 72 degrees (22 degrees Celsius), scientists say. The planet's confirmation was announced by NASA along with other discoveries by its Kepler telescope, which was launched on a planet-hunting mission in 2009. That's the first planet confirmed in the habitable zone for Kepler, which had already found Earth-like rocky planets elsewhere. Twice before astronomers have announced a planet found in that zone, but neither have been as promising. "This is a phenomenal discovery in the course of human history," Geoff Marcy of University of California, Berkeley, one of the pioneers of planet-hunting ...

Libor Brom Scientists claim that man is nothing but an accidental accumulation of odd material put together during a very brief fragment of time, doomed ultimately to disintegrate. The human body, they say, is composed of one octillion atoms, and three trillion of such atoms would form the period at the end of this sentence. They add that an atom is not actual material. If enlarged to one hundred meters in diameter, its contents would amount to waves moving with the speed of light, or faster, and the socalled material in such an extended atom would be no more than a pinhead. Scientists do not tell us what man is. Jesus Christ does. And He tells us how to live. That our thoughts and deeds must follow the example He gave during His short Journey on earth. That as children of God we have been given eternal life through His death and resurrection. Christ could have saved the octillion atoms found in His human form. As recently as 1968 Padre Pio died in a Franciscan Monastery in Southern Italy. For 50 years he bore the wounds of Christ's Passion. Thousands visited him every year when he was alive to be cured of their bodily and spiritual ills. Pope John Paul II visited the historic monastery where Padre Pio lived and died. This was the third time he had come to the remote village in southern Italy, San Giovanni Rotondo. On his first visit many years ago, His Holiness Pope John Paul II was just a simple priest and it was then that Padre Pio told him he would, one day, become Pope and that he would be covered in his own blood. 12/13/11 HIGGS BOSON "GOD PARTICLE" MAY EXIST SAYS CERN SR. PHYSI

HIGGS BOSON GOD PARTICLE EXISTS SAYS CERN SR. PHYSICIST: "One of CERN's most senior physicists this afternoon announced firm evidence for the existence of the elusive Higgs Boson, or God particle. Although the signal doesn't meet sigma standards for a 'full scientific discovery', it's still enough for researchers at CERN'S Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to predict a discovery next year. Two separate teams of scientists have been running independent experiments in secret from each other in order to improve the veracity of the results...orld's smallest hand? Scientists craft tiny hand just 0.00035mm across - by accident Without this mass, these particles would zip though the cosmos at the speed of light unable to bind together to form the atoms that make up everything in the universe, from planets to people The Higgs boson's existence was predicted in 1964 by Edinburgh University physicist Peter Higgs. But it has eluded previous searchers -- so much so that not all scientists believe in its existence. The hunt for the Higgs boson was one of the LHC's major tasks. The collider, housed in an 18-mile tunnel buried deep underground near the French- Swiss border, smashes beams of protons -- sub-atomic particles -- together at close to the speed of light, recreating the conditions that existed a fraction of a second after the Big Bang. If the physicists' theory is correct, a few Higgs bosons should be created in every trillion collisions, before rapidly decaying. This decay would ...

"Can We Know the Universe" by Carl Sagan

Today is Carl Sagan Day, November 6th, 2010. His birthday is November 9th, and I will be posting another video then, in a similar style. This is an essay he first published in "Broca's Brain", 1979. I think it marvelously communicates what it is to be a scientist. The thrill of understanding some small part of the Universe in a way that no human before you has understood it. It is the high of science, the thrill and the payoff. www.stephenjaygould.org The world needs Carl today as much as ever. His small light in the darkness is still shining, but magnified by the many minds he reached with his message. If you were affected by Carl Sagan, inspired by him, maybe you would consider lighting a candle for rationality, skepticism, and our shared humanity. In honor of Carl. "I would love to believe that when I die I will live again, that some thinking, feeling, remembering part of me will continue. But much as I want to believe that, and despite the ancient and worldwide cultural traditions that assert an afterlife, I know of nothing to suggest that it is more than wishful thinking. The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides." -- "In the Valley of the Shadow" PARADE magazine (10 March 1996)

G1.9 + 0.3 in 60 Seconds

Coordinates (J2000): RA 17h 48m 45s | Dec -27° 10' 00" Category: Supernovas & Supernova Remnants Constellation: Sagittarius Distance Estimate: 25000 light years G1.9+0.3 in 60 Seconds About a hundred and forty years ago, the light from a supernova explosion in our galaxy reached the Earth, but no one saw it. The discovery of this supernova remnant helps astronomers better understand how often these stellar time-bombs go off in our galaxy. The expanding remains of a supernova explosion in the Milky Way are shown in this composite image, on the left, of the supernova remnant G1.9+0.3. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory image obtained in early 2007 is shown in orange and the radio image from NRAO's Very Large Array (VLA) from 1985 is in blue. The difference in size between the two images gives clear evidence for expansion, allowing the time since the original supernova explosion (about 140 years) to be estimated. This makes the original explosion the most recent supernova in the Galaxy, as measured in Earth's time-frame (referring to when events are observable at Earth). Equivalently, this is the youngest known supernova remnant in the Galaxy (140 years old), easily beating the previous record of about 330 years for Cassiopeia A. The rapid expansion and young age for G1.9+0.3 was recently confirmed by a new VLA image obtained in early 2008. The original supernova explosion was not seen in optical light about 140 years ago because it occurred close to the center of the Galaxy ...

Erdähnlicher Planet entdeckt - Earth-like planet discovered

Once again, the scientist with the Kepler space telescope have identified an exoplanet that offer its size and temperature conditions for the development of life. Kepler 22b is the planet about 600 light years away from Earth Erdähnlicher Planet wird entdeckt Earth-like planet discovered The Kepler Exoplanet 22b could be habitable. Although the telescope has already detected more than 2000 possible planets. Kepler 22b is but the first one lies in a habitable zone. This means that its distance to the nearest star on the planet creates conditions that allow life. Kepler 22b is about 2.4 times larger than Earth. It revolves around a star of Class G, which also owns the Sun. The distance of Kepler 22b on its star is about 15 percent lower than that of the earth to the sun. Therefore, even a year on the planet is shorter than an Earth year. It orbits the star every 290 days. On the planet there is a temperature of about 22 degrees, so there may be water in the liquid state, which for life as we know it ist.n indispensable, the pleasant What are conditions like on the exoplanet, whether it is a gas planet, a rocky planet like Earth or an ocean planet is still unclear. He is in the direction of the constellation Lyra, and swan. As seen in the astronomical dimensions, it is very close: about 600 light years separate the earth from Kepler 22b. and we would need about 20 million million years to reach it. Kepler 22b is also the first planet, which scientists have discovered, which ...

Guardian Angel Prayer - Angels - Archangels - St. Michael

Song "Guardian Angel Prayer" Preformed by Rafael Brom and Colin Kennedy. Composed by Colin Kennedy. www.marianland.com Rafael Brom Released Covers Of Two Colin Kennedy Songs Recording artist Rafael Brom feature special covers of two Colin Kennedy tunes on Brom's albums entitled Angelophany and All My Love to You Jesus. The two songs are "Sandy" and "LeBuff Goes Undercover" (now entitled "Guardian Angel Prayer"). Release in January 2002 on CD, the album is distributed on Brom's Cosmotone Records label and made available by mail order this Cosmotone web site order page. Using Kennedy's original recordings as a foundation, Brom added vocals and effects to both. Brom also adapted and sang new lyrics from traditional prayer to Gardian Angel on the previously instrumental "LeBuff Goes Undercover", hence the title change to "Guardian Angel Prayer". Brom specializes in Christian and spiritual music and also is a graphic artist. Although neither tune was considered spiritual in origin, Brom has long wished to cover them and felt that they would be appropriate as opening tracks for his Angelophany CD.
