Alright, it's Spelunky time. Random dungeon, random items, random enemies, SO RANDUM LOL XD But I digress from that high-school, "invader zim" mentality. This game is hardcore to the bone, and will chew you up if you aren't extremely careful. I don't know if it's even possible to beat in 1 life without using the shortcuts after ever 4 levels. Anyways, I had fun with this one, so I might try again tomorrow.

Finally taken the record back from ortoslon, though by nowhere near as big a margin as last time. Thanks to: ortoslon: for being my competition. I would've settled for 3:02 if it wasn't for him zuluman: for his final boss strat the_illusionist: for his handy cheat mod, Spelunky Invincible, which I used for testing and practice way back when I was doing my first run Derek Yu: for making the game I get lucky here and get both a Jetpack and a Mattock. The ideal item combination to stumble across for a speedrun is probably Jetpack/Mattock/Compass, but if you only find two useful items, which is much more common, then Jetpack/Mattock is certainly one of the best possible combinations. (Other combinations that I would personally argue are equally good and have come close to getting very good times with are Compass/Mattock and Cape/Teleporter.) Since I'm already ahead of ortoslon's time when I reach the final boss, I decide not to use the mattock there. In testing I found that it's possible to shave 10 seconds off the final boss fight using a mattock, but it's MUCH more difficult and riskier (due to the random breakage chance of the mattock) than doing it the normal way. I got this run on my 8685th attempt. I either died or suicided (because I didn't find any items pre-jungle, or because I was behind the old run so there was no point going on) in all of the other 8684.

Just a short game play video of Spelunky. Theres a an odd skip about halfway through that makes you miss about 20 seconds worth of playtime and puts me ahead a bit but it is the same play through. The death was horrible. I expected the plant to be stunned after eating the cave man so I tried to run past him and he still ate me. =(
First thing - I'm terribly sorry about the length! However, consider that before time extension, this would have been split into two videos, and would be pretty much exactly the same length in total - it's... it's just really striking when it's under the shape of one big mass like that. WIth that said - uhm, I'm kind of surprised this took to short a time to finish, since the game is typically pretty hard! I was fully expecting this to linger on for longer, with a few days of sheerly no progress at all. I mean, all's left is the city of gold, and I don't know if that's honestly worth an extra run, since all that is a graphical change for one room, haha - I pretty much did everything I needed to head there, except I didn't take a chance withthe moai. It took me a while to think about this video, and how I'll do this video series. Should I make this a two or a zero? Should I even bother with numbering them? But then, I figured, this is exactly what playing this game is. Non progress is, in a sense, the most important 'element' of any roguelike, even when it's a nifty platformer. since I figured I ought to show you at least one stage from each of the four "levels" in this game, here's spelunky 2. Episode 3 will showcase the jungle and ice caves, and 4 will feature the ice caves and temple. Episode 5, if I happen to get that far, will be the last boss, and if I can fit it in, secrets.
1) Find the Udjat Eye in the cave levels (take the key to the locked chest, both of which appear in only one cave level) 2) Collect $50000 before reaching the Black Market 3) Find the black market in the jungle levels (The Udjat Eye will blink the closer you are to the entrance, the entrance is hidden in the dirt and must be bombed/dug open) 4) Buy the Ankh 5) Die next to the giant head statue in the blue cave levels and pick up the item where you respawn, inside the statue) 6) Kill the mummy on the first level of the city levels and take the sceptre that it drops. 7) Take the sceptre to the locked door in the second level of the city levels.

Found this neato free game created by Derek Yu. I believe it's based off the NES game Spelunker. All the levels are randomly generated, and it's pretty simple. Collect treasure while making your way to the exit. It's not nearly as hard as Spelunker but it can still be unforgiving at times. Give it a try, it's a good game.

Spelunky beaten from the first stage without using the action button or taking damage. Not using the action button means that I can never pick up any items or use my whip. My only way to defeat enemies is to jump on their heads or to use my very limited supply of bombs and ropes. Be sure to have annotations turned on, as I have provided commentary for this run. I make one exception to my conditions so that I may pick up the crate of flares on stage eight. I justify this by pointing out that, in earlier versions of Spelunky, there was a dedicated flare button that did not force the player to use the action button on dark stages. Spelunky is a fantastic roguelike platformer with a ton of depth and nearly infinite replay value. I have more than 1000 plays across two computers, and I am still learning new things about the game. While you try to get past each level, you can get money by collecting gems or ores such as gold, that you can use to buy better stuff. The other day I was high as hell and beat spelunky in like 5:20 so I figured I would try again and this time I'd record it with FRAPS so here is a complete spelunky run. I only take 1 damage from a really stupid mistake get 1 pixel away from an infinite yeti death loop and I get a dark temple level that took too long to beat, but other than that it was pretty solid.

Theres a smart way of killing the shopkeeper without assasins coming after you, but bombing the place is more satisfying. I honestly downloaded this game because of the shoplifting. Games should have more of those.

Thanks to ortoslon for his previous runs, which laid the foundations of how a Spelunky run should go and set the bar high for times on the first 15 levels. Thanks also to zuluman for his improved strategy for the final boss. Around half of the improvement over ortoslon's 3:39 run owes directly to this. (The other half owes to getting ridiculous luck with the level generator in areas 2 to 4.) Finally, thanks to the_illusionist, for his cheat mod, Spelunky Invincible, which lets you cheat in items. In combination with the tunnel man shortcuts, it made it much easier for me to practice the later areas equipped in the way I would be in an actual run - ie with a jetpack and possibly some other item like a mattock or teleporter. It would've taken a lot more deaths for me to become competent in the later areas if the option of cheating in items for them wasn't available. Enjoy.

Can't believe I did it, but I did it. Here is my Spelunky magnum opus: any% speedrun completed in 3 minutes and 53 seconds by in-game timer. Over the course of my previous attempts I have learned that the time can be lowered to sub-4 minutes with lots of luck and no major screwups. Now that I have achieved exactly that, I can tell this time is going to be VERY hard to reproduce, let alone beat by more than a couple seconds. I got lucky in every part of the run, didn't trigger shopkeeper guards, and got every timesaving item except the Compass, which would have lowered the time to about 3:45 in this particular case easily. But that would be almost too good, wouldn't it? Anyway, my work on the any% is definitely done this time. Have fun beating this. ;) Level by level times: level 01 — 0:11; level 02 — 0:18 (looted a shop, received Jetpack and Shotgun); level 03 — 0:07; level 04 — 0:16; level 05 — 0:05; level 06 — 0:14 (dark level); level 07 — 0:07; level 08 — 0:08; level 09 — 0:08; level 10 — 0:08; level 11 — 0:13; level 12 — 0:05; level 13 — 0:20 (received Scepter); level 14 — 0:15; level 15 — 0:07; final boss — 1:16 (including cutscene).
