Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Saturday August 1, 2009 IN THIS VIDEO, I've spent the latter part of the afternoon and evening of August 1 at PHL shooting arrivals for the first part of the day, and departures for the remainder of the day. The main reason for going out that day was to catch an Air France 747-400 departing (which you'll see in the video), as Air France NEVER brings in a 747, and did so because the regularly scheduled Air France flight on Thursday was cancelled, and the A330 on Friday was substituted with the 747. The normal A330 flight came in on Saturday, so you'll see both the 747 and A330 depart, along with a HUGE handful of US Airways departures. The 27s were in use (along with 35 and 26) and I utilized three different spots for 27L departures. I and one of my friends were actually kicked out of the one spot where it appears the trees take over, and we headed over to the other spot by a car park. I usually never get lucky with special schemes, but that day I got to see the PSA and Allegheny heritage A319s depart! If I had gotten there earlier and not shot arrivals, I would have gotten Southwest's New Mexico scheme too... Spotting at Los Angeles International Airport Los Angeles International Airport Westchester, California Thursday October 1, 2009 IN THIS VIDEO, I was hoping to attend the practice show at MCAS Miramar, but seeing how I was not granted access, I took a day trip up to LAX. The first part of this video shows arrivals landing on Runway 24R, shot from a park across from the In-N-Out Burger on Sepulveda Blvd. The remainder of the video covers departures (and some taxi video) of aircraft departing from the southern complex of LAX, utilizing Runway 25R. I took the day not knowing what to expect in terms of any special schemes, but I got a boat load of them on this outing! I can't explain why there was a water cannon ceremony for the Lan Chile 767-300, and I don't know what happened to that one United Airlines A320. I did have the scanner going but ended up turning it off because for some reason it'd flip between frequencies. Departures were shot from a spot that is universally known as Imperial Hill. Kennedy International Airport New York City, New York (Queens) Sunday December 6, 2009 IN THIS VIDEO, you will see Kennedy Airport operating on the 31s all day. The first part of the video shows departures off of Runway 31L, performing the famous Canarsie departure climb (and at the location where all of the famous banking photos are taken). The second part features arrivals into 31R. Keep in mind that I did not shoot video of every departure and arrival in the six plus hour span I was at Kennedy because there are a lot of American, Delta, jetBlue, and regional jet (American Eagle or Comair) movements. Towards the end of the video, I switched spots to catch the A380 landing on Runway 31L and then returned to the original spot for more 31R arrivals before leaving. This was a very cold and windy day, but also an enjoyable one. Don't expect any more spotting videos from Kennedy anytime soon because tolls in the region keep on going up... Some of the video of 31R arrivals (Singapore Airlines Star Alliance 747-400, Open Skies 757, Uzbekistan 767, jetBlue new colors A320) was not included because of the camera malfunctioning. In 1080p... the rapid response system of the Very Large Telescope in Chile goes after fleeting gamma ray bursts, courtesy of ESOCast. Gamma-ray bursts are among the most energetic events in the Universe, but some appear curiously faint in visible light. The biggest study to date of these so-called dark gamma-ray bursts, using the GROND instrument on the 2.2-meter MPG/ESO telescope at La Silla in Chile, has found that these gigantic explosions don't require exotic explanations. Their faintness is now fully explained by a combination of causes, the most important of which is the presence of dust between the Earth and the explosion. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), fleeting events that last from less than a second to several minutes, are detected by orbiting observatories that can pick up their high energy radiation. Thirteen years ago, however, astronomers discovered a longer-lasting stream of less energetic radiation coming from these violent outbursts, which can last for weeks or even years after the initial explosion. Astronomers call this the burst's afterglow. While all gamma-ray bursts [1] have afterglows that give off X-rays, only about half of them were found to give off visible light, with the rest remaining mysteriously dark. Kennedy International Airport Jamaica, New York Saturday April 30, 2011 This video contains a full day of spotting, consisting of activity between 10:00 am and 6:30 pm at John F. Kennedy International Airport, with airport operations utilizing arrivals on Runways 31R and 31L and departures from Runway 31L, switching later in the day to arrivals on 4R and 4L and departures from 4L and 31L from taxiway KK. The video starts with a 31L departure from Howard Beach and switches to 31R and 31L arrivals - with distant shots of 31R arrivals while getting some 31L departures. The 31R arrivals were shot from a location off of the Rockaway Turnpike, while the 31L arrivals were shot from Inwood Park. The location of the activity from the 4s can be easily be identified. Special schemes are abundant in the video, as are two out of three normal A380 operations. The Air France A380 flight was handled by a 747. Kennedy International Airport Queens, New York Sunday July 18, 2010 IN THIS VIDEO, I cover arrivals to Kennedy Airport's Runways 31R and 31L, as well as departures off of Runway 22R later in the video. All video seen here was shot from a shopping center off of Rockaway Boulevard, while the A380 was shot from Inwood Park, and the 22R departures were shot from Bayswater Park. I hope you don't mind over an hour of spotting, with the video shot between 1:45 pm and 7:00 pm on Sunday, and features a small handful of special schemes and a few aircraft going into JFK and flying over JFK that I found to be interesting. Strangely enough, most of the jetBlue traffic arrived on 31L rather than 31R and a larger than normal number of Delta aircraft landed on 31R rather than 31L. The aircraft you see here is owned by Paul Farber, and is based at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, New York. I had already gotten a flight with Paul, and met up with him that morning with the intent of getting SemperApollo airborne, as it was only fair that he got to go flying with him. KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT SATURDAY JANUARY 15, 2011 This video features spotting from two different locations, while JFK was landing on 22L and 13L in addition to departing on 13R. The first few minutes feature 22L arrivals, which were nice, but was a PAIN to deal with, as that spotting location was covered in several feet of snow and was a pain in the neck to get to. I then switched to the 13L spot just to see if it was actually accessible. It was being plowed and then was available. It was a GREAT move and you will see why in the video. I even got some video of 22L arrivals and a couple 13R departures from that spot. Akane Takada demonstrates the technique of spotting, a crucial skill for being able to execute swift turns on stage. Spotting: A technique used in turns to maintain balance and direction. The dancer focuses the eyes on a set spot and keeps eye contact with it while turning the body. At the last moment, the dancer whips the head around and reconnects eye contact with the spot. This prevents the dancer becoming dizzy and gives them the appearance of turning very rapidly.

Just like the video from August, this trip was done as a last-minute trip, and it turned out to be a good one. Spotting at Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia International Airport Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Saturday July 31, 2010 IN THIS VIDEO, you will see video I've shot at Philadelphia International Airport between 1:30 PM to 7:45 PM, with many breaks in between many of the different arrivals and departures. Initially, PHL was operating on the 9s but then switched to the 27s later in the day. I do have about twenty minutes of video that aren't included here because somehow that tape became bad and I lost all of that video, which sucks, because the one plane I was after had landed in the first twenty minutes of the video I shot.
