PART 1 of 2 /////////////// I grew up with Ruger...so did millions more. Ruger guns are tough, usually reasonably priced, well-designed, fun, and continue to stand the test of time. With the introduction of their piston-driven AR-15, the SR-556, their new direction in the acceptance of tactical guns is solidified. This overcomes a past Bill Ruger-era disdain for the such guns in the hands of civilian, a misguided policy that has long since been overturned. Because of this, the mere fact the SR-556 is a Ruger makes it something special. The good news is that the gun does not disappoint even when subjected to extensive shooting and evaluation as we did at TNP. In tactical Run N Guns the SR performed well: accurate, fast shooting, well-equipped, and reliable. It won over all the shooters, including me. Fifty yard accuracy with an unmagnified red dot was impressive with some groups but opened up some at 100 yards. The gun overall showed about a 2 MOA capability at 100 yards with regular ball ammo. Some 1 MOA groups with this regular ammo were achieved but were non-standard. With match grade ammo and careful benchresting, I think the gun might be 1 MOA capable. A better trigger should aid this quest for max accuracy of the SR-556. The design seems sound and squared away with a nice selection of supporting accessories. I think its well established by now that the Ruger SR 556 is an excellent rifle, with good value. In this video I focus on those great features, but I also try to go over what I have seen as some of the cons. Overall, I personally think the SR is a fantastic choice and I would choose it again over any other rifle in its price range. There are a couple of cons that I wanted to bring to talk about, but nothing that would swing me away from this rifle.

Ruger SR-556 chambered in Remington 6.8mm SPC. Its POU is hunting. Weight was not an issue. The front of the barrel has a Rainer Arms XTC extreme tactical compensator. This reduced perceived recoil and muzzle rise. For lighting: a Surefire Backup 110 lumen powered by a single CR 123. The Backup sits in a Vltor mount. Ergo ladder rail grips surround the quad rail which reduced the radius of the fore grip. Magpul's multi mission sling system with an ASAP plate, Magpul rail sling attachment, and a Daniel Defense QD quick detach make for an array of options while hunting. The Larue Tactical FUG is a nice way to steady the rifle. C Product magazines work quite well with the Ruger. The Magpul enhanced trigger guard is nice, especially since hunting in Virginia usually involves gloves. The most effective modification done to improve accuracy was installing the Geissele SSA-E two stage trigger. Just for preventative measure a KNS none rotating trigger/hammer pin set was installed. The generation 2 version works great with the Magpul BAD leaver. The stock grips were upgraded with a storage compartment which holds three CR-123 batteries. A Brovo Company Gun Fighter Mod. 3 charging handle which is far superior to a stock AR-15 charging handle. The Magpul CTR locks into place, get it, it is worth it. The one thing I left out of the video is the Spikes Tactical ST-T2 tungsten filled buffer tube.

Recorded with my phone so the video is horrible. Sorry about that. Only modifications to the gun in this video are: Added a Magpul CTR stock, Magpul AFG, Phantom Flash Hider. The optics I'm running is the Vortex StrikeFire Red/Green dot (zero magnification). In my opinion, a high value red dot. The only thing I do not like about it is that its a 4 moa. Wish it was a 2 moa but eventually I'll get the Aimpoint CompML3. Since this video I've switched out the Magpul AFG for the TangoDown Stubby. I'm sure the Magpul AFG will work great for most people but for me it just didn't quite feel right. I can treat the stubby kind of like the AFG by basically putting my hand partially on the rail and partially on the stubby and it just feels more natural to me.

Short little video of Eric and me trying out the SR-556 with some 1/2 gallon milk cartons filled with water, food coloring and a little Dawn dish soap. Targets were about 25 yards away. I think I need to get my hands on a high-speed camera! Remember: 1) EVERY gun is loaded, 2) always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, 3) know your target and what is beyond it and 4) never put your finger inside the trigger guard until your sights are on the target. And ALWAYS wear eye and ear protection! I hate seeing YouTubers without both.

Just burning some dust of my SR556, with the snow and bad weather I have been lacking on trigger time... I just picked up some some 20 round Thermolds and so far they run reliably, the second mag failed to hold the bolt open after the last round but it was new out the warpper so I'll give it a few more runs. Ammo used is Barnaul Brown Bear 55gr Hollow points(laquer coated steel)...
