Making standing waves

A standing wave is made by sending a wave group down the tank against a fixed wall. The reflected wave will superimpose upon the incident waves doubling the amplitude. As the wave maker imparts more energy in to the system, the amplitude increases. The waves are sustained by gravity and hydrostatic force and dissipated by fluid viscosity (the frictional forces against the wall are negligible). The video has been edited as the clopotis and seiche that occur last over a half hour and are eventually killed with the wave maker acting as an absorber, as it tries to produce waves offset by one half period of the waves hitting it.

Surfing a standing wave on the North shore

Today we went to Waimea beach and got to watch something cool. The beach sits at the base of a valley which has a small stream running through it. Due to wave action, sand gets pushed up into a large hill in front of the stream each winter. This creates a natural dam that the stream water collects behind for months which is about 20 feet above the level of the ocean on the other side of the sand berm. Every year some one digs a trench through the sand releasing millions of gallons of fresh water into the ocean. This produces a standing wave which is perfect for body boarding and surfing on. When we first walked up these kids had just a trickle of water moving through a trench about a foot wide they had been digging for quite a while. Within 20 minutes it had turned into a roaring torrent. It was amazing to watch how fast it grew and ate away the banks. It all lasted about an hour before the water slowed down but it was fun watching the action.

Standing Waves

Standing WavesWe observe a very important case of interference when two counter-running plane waves of same amplitude superpose. The resulting oscillatory process is called a standing wave. In practice standing waves occur when waves are reflected from barriers. The wave which falls on the barrier and the oncoming reflected wave superpose thus forming a standing wave. Here frequency, phase, and coefficient of wave attenuation in the place of reflection are very important factors. Oscillations on each point of a standing wave have the same frequency with counter-running waves. Such points are called antinodes of a standing wave. The points where oscillation amplitude turns into zero are called standing-wave nodes. The surrounding points in the nodes do not oscillate. Every wave process with propagation of disturbance can be accompanied by the occurrence of standing waves. They may occur not only in gaseous, fluid, or solid environments but also in vacuum when electromagnetic disturbances are propagated and reflected. They may occur, for example, in long electric lines. A pure standing wave may exist only when there are no losses in the environment and the waves are fully reflected from the boundaries. Usually besides standing waves there are also progressive waves in the environment. They supply energy to the places where it is consumed and radiated. In optics it is also possible to establish a standing wave with visible maximums and minimums of an electric field. If the ...

This black, square-shaped platform is being vibrated by an amplified wave generator whose frequency is being gradually increased while someone pours salt on it to reveal the standing waves generated at the resonant frequency (the first pattern) or a harmonic of the resonant frequency (all the other patterns) of the black square. Each time the visible pattern changes, the wave generator "finds" another harmonic of the square's resonant frequency. The salt makes these standing waves visible sine the salt is vibrated away from the areas of the platform which are moving, and subsequently rest in the areas which not moving. These areas in the platform which are not moving are where the standing wave nodes reside ( [link] ). While the study of these waves is called cymatics ( en.wikipedia.org iki/Cymatics ), the patterns themselves are caused by the standing waves. These patterns exist everywhere, we just normally don't get to witness them. Some people in the comments have suggested that this is how crop circles form. My opinion on the matter is that this is not likely since: 1) The amplitude (the strength) of a standing wave residing in a material decreases exponentially with material thickness. Hence, the strength necessary to cause a standing wave large enough to effect corn stalks would create an earthquake. 2) Ignoring the above, the chance that any standing wave patterns which would somehow arise in earth that is as amorphous as some random farmer's field would be would ...

Standing waves in the mouth of the Gualala River

This video was taken at 2:00 pm, about 2 hours after the Gualala river opened, on January 11, 2009. The opening occurred after head difference between the estuary and the ocean waters grew as the tide went out. The sand at the narrowest point in the beach liquefied, opening the mouth. Initially, the flow was thin sheet flow over the beach, but as the velocity increased, these forms started to pop up.

Alex Putney - Resonance Changes & Infrasound Standing Waves - Red Ice Radio

Alex Putney - Resonance Changes & Infrasound Standing Waves August 14, 2011 Alex Putney is behind the website humanresonance.org. He is also the author of "Lightwater", "Phi" and "Veil of Invisibility". Alex, currently in La Maná, Ecuador, is with us to discuss the latest developments related to his theory of infrasound standing waves and the resonance changes that we now, according to Alex, are going though. We discuss the latest news and anomalies related to this phenomena. We also talk about new angles, perspectives and insight into his research and conclusions. Human Resonance has been organized to share the rediscovery of a superfluid resonance technology of our ancient Sanskrit mother culture, crystallizing the body and synchronizing human consciousness. As we collectively move toward a higher planetary resonance, our growing awareness brings us together in alignment at convergence points of infrasound standing waves. Ancient sacred sites are calling attuned healers into resonance, and we are responding to the call of the sacred waters of La Maná, Ecuador to create a healing space for their ayurvedic use.
